Buy tickets before you go - but definitely go!
Buy tickets beforehand! It's a great museum with knowledgeable guides and definitely worth visiting! Don't let the ticket annoyance deter you. We had a great guide who adjusted to the time we had and gave us a comprehensive tour with historical and cultural insight. I would love to come back!

A Must visit to Nairobi Museum
Nairobi Museum is a perfect place to visit and learn about different kind of Birds that are found in Kenya, and the rich history of this great nation. They also have displayed different animals that are found in various National Park within Kenya parks and reserves. The guide who took us around explained to us very well that made this experience very interesting. We visited the snake park too very interesting as well. Perfect place to visit while in Kenya. Worth it!!

Nice museum to learn about Kenyan culture, history, and nature
The Nairobi National Museum exceeded my expectations. The museum was extensive with good information on the history and culture of Kenya. I spent around 3 hours there. The highlight for me was the section of human evolution - there were many important fossils found in Kenya on display. I recommend against getting the tour. I did not have a guide and thought there was more than enough signage to understand what I was looking at. Those with guides seemed, in my opinion, to be getting rushed through the museum. My one complaint is that buying tickets is . . . a process. Payment is only by ecitizen. I was sent to a shop in the museum complex to have someone else, who I payed in cash, pay by mpesa because foreign cards are often an issue.

A comprehensive outlook about Kenya's history, culture and wildlife
National Museum is certainly worth a visit. It is a quick stop to understand Kenya's history, culture and wildlife. The museum is maintained well and is bang at the city centre. The nearby snake park which is in the same compound is not that great though. It is under maintenance and many exhibits were missing although there was no reduction in the entry fee.

Pay the extra for the snake park!
This is a very good option if you want to take a break from the outdoor activities. You need to pay online. Via some government website. They do not accept payment there. Cash or credit. We are visiting so did not have WiFi or cell data. But after 10min or trying. The cashier let us use his computer. It’s a good museum. BUT pay the extra to see the snake museum. That’s worth every penny! We took more photos in the snake park than expected. Reptiles to include snakes, turtles crocs, fish and snakes!

Kenyan history spanning many thousands of years
You need to buy the ticket with ecitizen account- making it difficult to be a tourist. But a guy helped me, and the museum is actually very good. Many interesting things, good explanations and they also have several good shops and a gallery.

We understand that purchasing tickets through the eCitizen platform can be challenging for tourists and we appreciate your patience. We're glad to hear that someone was able to assist you. We're thrilled that you enjoyed the museum's exhibits, explanations, shops, and gallery. Your positive remarks motivate us to continue providing an enriching experience for all our visitors. We hope to welcome you back soon and make your next visit even more seamless and enjoyable. Safe travels and best wishes, Jane Ndegwa. +254711752203 Tour Guide at Nairobi National Museum.

Go at an hour when you have no chance of running into a school
In itself ok, but there were GIANT many schools also visiting so you could barely reach the entrance. In the museum itself deafening noise from all the children. Our son liked to see the animals. Had we been at ease we probably would have spent more time. Also visited the snakes, she also liked son very much, but crocodiles do indeed have a small enclosure.

Excellent introduction to the history, both human and natural, of Kenya.
We dropped in on our first full day after arriving in Nairobi. Visiting the museum proved a great introduction to the history, both cultural and natural, of Kenya. We stayed at the Nairobi Serena Hotel during our visit to Kenya. It turns out that as the museum grew after its founding in 1910 it was temporarily housed in a larger building at the location of the hotel in 1922. The museum then transferred to its current location in 1930. Our city guide helped with the purchase of the museum tickets and handed us off to a museum guide, Joseph. He was very friendly and knowledgeable. The museum is divided into permanent galleries. We found the “Cradle of Human Kind” was particularly informative about the early hominids; it was inspiring to see the ancient tools made by our oh-so-distant predecessors. The “History of Kenya“ was of particular interest to me; I am always trying to understand the context of places I visit. The colonial and post-colonial periods caught my attention. The many tribal communities with their intrinsic rivalries unfortunately made it easier for Britain to apply divide-and-conquer approach to their rule, similar to what Spain had done in South America and the Philippines. Those same inter-tribal tensions come into play in contemporary times, exhortations and appeals for unity notwithstanding. Our guide, Joseph, made sure to emphasize the importance of “Harambee.” Meaning “all for one” or “pulling together” this word is the national motto of Kenya and is featured on the flag. The “Story of Mammals” the “Birds of East Africa ” galleries were both fairly interesting but we had the typical mixed feelings regarding the sheer number of stuffed specimens of local animals knowing that we were going to see so many of these alive and in the wild. The “super tusker” elephant, Ahmed, was an impressive sight.

Snake park, aquarium, different culture exhibition, historical knowledge and the East African Birds, all brought closer!
Having a repeat visit to the museum felt extremely different from the last experience. It was great. I didn't know solo travels were that good. I had an amazing time learning about the birds of East Africa with more time for myself to understand them better(the main reason I went back). It was very satisfying. The museum also exhibits the different cultures found in Kenya, it's got a snake park and aquarium. Both the aquarium and snake park exhibiting different live species. Nairobi national museum was a spectacular place to be. Within it's vicinity is also the famous nature society, "Nature Kenya" that provides society library for researchers among others. In simple terms it's got all the amenities and facilities you might need and want.
