    Defensive fortress!
This defensive fortress is emblematic. Its strategic location offers views of the city of Cairo. Its construction began during the reign of Saladin. There is a mosque, a museum and the viewpoint. Entrance costs 450 Egyptian pounds (in full) or 15 dollars.

    Amazing Cairo
Weather in March is great and it was an amazing experience to see the citadel and the Mohammedali mosque which is completely made of alabaster. Also there was a great view of Cairo from the top of the Citadel. We could see the pyramids of Giza and Saqqara.

    Majestic Saladin Citadel in Cairo
The Saladin Citadel in Cairo is a breathtaking testament to architectural and historical grandeur. This colossal structure not only dominates the skyline but also offers a profound glimpse into the past. Visiting the Citadel was an awe-inspiring experience, allowing me to marvel at its beauty and significance. Highly recommended for anyone interested in exploring the rich tapestry of Cairo’s history and enjoying spectacular views. The Saladin Citadel is truly a must-visit landmark that captures the essence of historical magnificence.

    Beautiful views
Its silhouette can be seen from different points of the city and is a must-see. It is an important citadel that rises above Cairo; It was built by Suleiman in the 12th century as a fortification to protect the city from the crusades. It includes the Alabaster Mosque and a couple of museums inside. The views of the city are impressive, with the Al Rifa'i Mosque and the Sultan Hasan Mosque-Madrasa standing out in the front row. On clear days (pollution permitting) you can even see the pyramids of Giza

A wonderful day exploring Egypt’s past!
We loved our tour of the Citadel, the Islamic temples and Christian churches ending with an hour at the Khan Khalili bazaar. We booked a full day tour with EMO and Wafaa was our tour guide. We had an amazing day thanks to Wafaa, she explained the history as well as the influences on each of the temple/ churches/synagogues. It was a progression through the ages and she made it come alive.

    Not to be missed
Fortified complex within which there are beautiful examples of Islamic religious architecture and some interesting museums. Other aspects worthy of note are the terraces, from which you can enjoy a suggestive panorama, and the city walls itself. The entrance ticket includes access to all the sites that can be visited. The atmosphere is very serene and festive, especially due to the numerous school groups on trips. Boys and girls often ask to take a photo together, intrigued by foreign tourists. I would recommend agreeing to the photo, but always with people of your own gender or mixed groups. Inside the complex there are bathrooms (in various places) and a cafe. Take at least 3 hours for the visit because the citadel is very large and rich. Bring a hat for the heat, appropriate clothing for religious sites and water if you don't want to buy it on site.

I was surprised to see the pyramids from the Citadel.
I could see the pyramids from the Citadel (Al-Qala). It was quite a surprise. The Citadel (Al-Qala) was built on a hill in 1176 as a base against the Crusaders. Of course, it's a citadel, so I understand that it was built to overlook the cityscape, but I was really surprised that I could see the Giza Pyramids, which are quite far away. You can also get a great view of Cairo city below. I recommend it.

What we saw and what we didn't
The largest citadel in the Islamic world is perched on a promontory where you can overlook the old city of Cairo. What we saw: Our visit enabled us to inspect the walls and towers, walk through a garden, visit the Muhammad Ali Mosque (Alabaster Mosque) and view Old Cario spread out below us from the terrace. We were shown the site of the Massacre of the Mamluks. What we didn't see: According to the old sign there is the Museum of Al Gawhara Palace, National Military Museum, Museum of Royal Carriages, Open Garden Mosque, two other mosques (Al Nasir Mohammad Ibn Qalaun and Sulayman Pasha) on the site. However, we didn't visit any of them and we're not sure if they required extra entrance fees, were closed (as many guidebooks say they often are) or they just weren't included in our tour. Based on the information in the guidebooks they may not have been of great interest.

    A nice hour trip
There are great views of the city from the top. The highlight by far is the Mohammed Ali mosque. We spent around one hour and four that to be sufficient time to see the main attractions and take nice pictures.

    Beautiful!
After getting a little lost at the bottom of the citadel, we took the climb and discovered this fabulous monument that offers a panoramic view of Cairo and a sumptuous mosque. Don't miss the military museum and the 2 other mosques nearby. It is just a shame that there is no restaurant, there are only stands selling sweet snack.
