Important to time with the changing of the guards
We made it just in time for the changing of the guards ceremony and stood for the ceremony. The ceremony was excellent with drumming and instruments accompanying flag and sword carriers. Very colourful. I dressed up in a hanbok. There are plenty of dress up shops nearby to rent costumes from. There was a good percentage of people dressed up and it was free entry for the new year’s holiday. We took a taxi there as I was dressed up, but bus very convenient also. Palace grounds were ok, lots of different photo opportunities, and buildings and courtyards. The little island lake and pagoda were popular for photos. Recommend maybe two hours here, including ceremony. Very close to Folk Village and Blue House and adjoins another palace. People who dress up may wish to travel to Bukchon Hanoi Village for more photos while they are dressed up. Gwanghwamun square and the bronze statues of King Sejong is very nearby and worth doing on the same visit. Flat, but stairs up to the pavilions to look inside where they were open and set up for viewing. A good palace. You could take children who walk unassisted but I wouldn’t take prams.

    Gyeongbokgung palace
Visited as part of an all day Seoul city tour. This was the 2nd stop on the itinerary and we got to see the changing of the guards ceremony. Worth a stop during your visit to Seoul. The National folk museum of Korea is also worthwhile and is adjacent to the palace.

    You Must!
Without question, Gyeongbokgung Palace is the most iconic of them all in Seoul and probably the entire country. The magnificent sight of the building, flanked by ancient walls and amid vast communal plazas, will always be in my memory, with or without pictures. I loved watching all the people wearing Hanbok and having a joyful time, even in the freezing December weather. It’s worth mentioning that the palace is in a larger outdoor complex with other buildings, monuments, and nooks to explore. Don’t JUST see Gyeongbokgung. Venture further out to witness the history and culture around it. Will need to come back when it’s warmer!

    Immerse Yourself In Culture
The palace was our last stop before our flight. So we had to check out of our hotel and had medium sized (25 inch) luggages with us. Fret not. There are luggage storage facilities at the Heungnyemun Gate. We arrived in time for the Changing of Guard Ceremony at 10am. It lasted about 20minutes or so. Then we joined a chinese tour (free of charge) at 10.30am. The tour was insightful as we learned more of korean culture and appreciated the architecture.

Very Zen way to spend a Layover
We took advantage of a long layover at Incheon International Airport . (Look up the airport for the FREE TOUR options) Nice place to stroll and sight-see and they have authentically costumed performers parade thru as well. Local market with huge variety of foods nearby too.

Worthwhile seeing the results rebuilding efforts...
Gyeongbokgung Palace was the oldest of the remaining royal palaces in South Korea. Although much of the complex was several times destroyed by the Japanese, restoration has been ongoing for many years. It was worthwhile to see the results of the rebuilding efforts. We have visited many royal residences worldwide and found this one to be on par with most of the others. We hope South Korea continues to preserve/invest in their heritage.

Incredible place, super technological and with information about everything. The entire space has indications on the way to see all the items. Various interactive exhibits. In some spaces you can open the drawers that have the most collection. Free access

One of the largest palaces in the heart of Seoul, and the level of maintenance is impressive.
You get the impression that you are able to travel back in time and experience life a few hundred years ago. You might be surprised to learn that you can access the palace(s) for free if you hire a hanbok (a traditional Korean clothing) from the surrounding districts. There are tons near the palace, but I bought mine from Hanboknam. You might as well embrace the moment and feel at home. Small details like the ceremonial of the changing of the guard also aid in giving tourists an appreciation for bygone eras.

    Breathtaking palace
Located in the heart of Seoul with mountains in the backdrop on one side and the towers of Downtown Seoul on the other, this huge complex is breathtaking and a must visit in Seoul. The grounds are huge and you can pass a few hours taking in the beautiful ornate buildings and manicured grounds. It is worth ensuring you are there for the colourful changing of the guard ceremony, which takes place inside the main gate at 9:45am and 2pm everyday. This is outside the main palace complex so there is no need to buy a ticket if you just want to watch this, but it is inexpensive and well worth a look.

    Grand Palace
I would make sure to go in the morning as early as possible. We luckily made it to the Changing of the guards. Don't miss it. It was one of the highlights. The outer palaces and areas were free but to get to the main palace you have to buy tickets for 3000 won at the ticket booth. We probably spent 2 hours there but you can spend more especially if it's a nice sunny day. Loads of people so go early if you want a good picture. There are no washrooms within the immediate palace grounds though. You need to go inside the National Place Museum which is weat of the main gate. You can also refill your water there too.
