Hotels near Blue Mosque

Built between 1609-1616, this impressive mosque has six minarets. Why is it called "Blue Mosque?" There are two stories: the first, more common one is that the interior is covered in Blue İznik tiles. The second is: many years ago, ancient sailors who sailed by the mosque on the Marmara Sea saw the blue colors of the sea reflected in the mosque.

    Iconic Istanbul.
If you’re going to visit just one tourist attraction in Istanbul I would make it The Blue Mosque - it is without a doubt an iconic emblem of Istanbul, and one of the most beautiful buildings I’ve ever seen. There was a huge queue when I got there which snaked around outside the complex, but it moved pretty quickly and I was inside under twenty minutes. If you’re not dressed appropriately they provide you with a covering, as well as scarves for women to cover their hair. A must see in Istanbul.

    Stunning and stupendous!
What a beautiful mosque. The pastel coloured domes were a delight to behold, but not forgetting the blue Iznit tiles and stained glass windows. It was extremely busy and we had to queue for about 20 mins but the long queue moved on very rapidly. Gorgeous inside. Outside were six slim minarets and made the mosque a great beauty to behold.

Beautiful and Iconic Mosque in Istanbul
Beautiful and packed - closes for prayer regularly. Had to return on a second day as it was closed for prayer and the line up to get in after prayer was too long. The mosque itself is beautiful - unfortunately cables for chandeliers hanging everywhere inside make good pictures difficult. The outside is spectacular. Definitely a must see in Istanbul.

    Stunning!
The Blue Mosque in Istanbul is a jaw-dropping masterpiece that truly lives up to the hype! Stepping inside, I was instantly mesmerized by the stunning blue tiles that give it its name. The intricate design and the sheer grandeur of the architecture are breathtaking. It's not just a historical site; it's a place of profound serenity and spirituality. The courtyard is a tranquil spot to soak in the atmosphere, and the views of the mosque against the backdrop of the city are postcard-perfect. Whether you're a history enthusiast, a culture buff, or simply someone who appreciates beauty, the Blue Mosque is a must-visit that will leave you in awe. It's an iconic symbol of Istanbul, and I couldn't recommend it more!

Eye Candy-More than 20,000 blue Iznik tiles- just stunning!
Don't worry about the lines-they move quickly. You will regret not seeing this mosque if you are in Turkey. We carried a bag for our shoes after reading a tip on TA and also carried my own scarf. At the entrance, they will provide you with a scarf and cover up if you forget. This is a perfect example about how healthy competition can stir creativity. The mosque was commissioned because Sultan Ahmet, at age 19 wanted to build a mosque greater than the Haghia Sophia, also a must see mosque. It is incredible that at this young age he had a clear vision of what he wanted. ( I overhead some information while passing a tour group. )It has six minarets, stunning ceilings, a detailed Sultan's loge, but for me it is all about the tiles.

    Blue tile majesty
The best viewing point of the Blue Mosque externally is from the western side, ie, in the direction of the Hippodrome. The aquamarine and turquoise-coloured tiles (hence the name Blue Mosque) are what makes the mosque famous. I was especially taken with one exquisite blue tile pattern on the building’s facade in particular.

    Wonderful
Well it certainly is impressive. A most wonderful building with great internal decoration. Obvioulsy, you have dress soberly comply with the dress code, and also remember to remove your shoes. Queues can be long, but it is quieter in the late afternoon and evening. Do check the opening hours immediately before you go. They can change on a whim

    Serene Masterpiece
On many bucket lists, this is a sight that exceeds expectations. The exterior and courtyard are at once imposing in their scale and artistic splendour, but it is the interior that takes the breath away. Firstly the scale as the domes soar into the sky. Then the splendour of the decorations that cover all the walls. But for me the most remarkable feature was the light - I expected it to be dark but the cavernous interior was flooded with light, adding to the spirituality. It’s incredible that buildings of this size and complexity were being built while in England we were still in wooden homes. The entrance across the square is impressive as you pass the fountains, but you have to go to the other side for the visitors entrance. Obviously shoes have to be removed and you need to be well covered to get in. Remarkably there is no entrance charge but there is a booth for donations as you leave. It’s a snip to get to Sultanahmet Square on the tram. I visited at 5 pm and there was almost no queue. Be aware taxis are not allowed close to the old quarter so tram or short walk might be required. Watch out for taxi fees after you leave. They know they have a captive market. Fix the price before leaving and still expect to pay way over the odds.

    Beautiful place of worship
A fantastic architectural gem inside and out. There are extremely long lines if you do not manage to come first thing in the morning or after 2:30pm or so. Keep in mind that visitors are not allowed in during services - for about an hour in each instance.
