Visiting Wat Chedi Luang in Chiang Mai was an amazing experience. The architecture is breathtaking and the ancient chedi tell stories of a spiritual past. I highly recommend stopping here to immerse yourself in Thai culture and history.

Beautiful area full with lots of small temples and of course incredible large ones. Can get quite busy especially when tours come through, 100TBH entry for adults and 50 for kids. Theres rules for dressing appropriately but they have sarongs you can borrow for a 100TBH deposit.

Beautiful large temple complex in the middle of the Old Town. Faier entrance fee, plenty to see. As in any temple, shoulders to calves should be covered, otherwise there are cloths on site. The Blessed Sacrament is unfortunately not accessible to women (they are considered unclean here due to menstruation). So I can’t rate the Blessed Sacrament, but everything else is beautiful. I was more interested in the old ruin in the middle of the site anyway. There is much to discover on the property, it is worth bringing some time. The toilets are fine.

Chedi Luang stands for the Great Fontaine, which, as the name suggests, houses a huge Lannah-style Great Fontaine, the tallest building in Chiang Mai to date. That is why it is also called the "Great Fata Temple." Futa was 90 meters high, but after a major earthquake in 1545, it was only 60 meters high. Although the tower has collapsed due to the earthquake, it is still the highest and most prestigious temple building in Chiang Mai.

Wonderful temple complex with a huge partially collapsed brick chedi. In the main temple there is a Buddha statue over 8 meters tall, next to it are 2 other statues about 4 meters high. Admission 50 Baht (November 2024). Women are not allowed into a smaller temple. Bring at least 90 minutes to visit. Highly recommended.

This is the wat of all wats! Wat Chedi Luang, together with the Buddhist Manuscript Library and Museum is an amazing site full of fascinating things to see. This 14th century temple, where the City Pillar Shrine is located, is famous for its enormous Chedi. It's truly magnificent. Look out for your lunar zodiac animal statue on one side of the Chedi. If you've only got time for one Thai temple - make it this one.

This temple has been around since the 15th century and once housed the famed Emerald Buddha, which is now in Bangkok. The old brick chedi is still in the temple complex and continues to be used as a place of worship. The main temple is now a more modern building in front of the car entrance. This has a stunning read and gold hall with a high altar that has a statue of a standing Buddha, flanked by two monks.

Wat Chedding Luang, which means Temple with a Big Stupa. It was originally a massive 90 meters tall, but due to an earthquake, it remains 60 meters high. When I saw it in person, my jaw dropped at its enormous size. I've been to many places, but I've never seen such a beautiful and unique stupa. There is a 50 baht entrance fee.

"Temple of the Big Stupa," is a captivating landmark in Chiang Mai. Construction began in the 14th century as a resting place for a king's ashes. Witness the passage of time through the weathered structure, a testament to the Lanna Kingdom's legacy. The grand chedi, once the tallest structure in Chiang Mai, suffered damage from earthquakes over the centuries. Learn about the fascinating story of its construction, deterioration, and partial reconstruction. Wander the temple grounds, taking in the serene atmosphere and admiring the smaller buildings and sculptures that complete the complex. As with many temples in Thailand, visitors are expected to dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered.

World’s First Silver Sanctuary World’s First Silver Sanctuary, located at Wat Sri Suphan (Sri Suphan Temple), Chaingmai, Thailand. The Abbot of Sri Suphan Temple, Phrakru Phitak Suttikun (Suphon Suthasilo), Temple Committees, Devotees, and group of Lanna craftsman had been constructed the silver sanctuary by using the former base, former boundary stones and former principle Buddha image (Phra Jao Jed Tue, built in B.E. 2043.). The Silver Sanctuary was built and decorated by Silver Handicraftsmen (Lanna folk wisdom) of Wua Lai Community that has been descended from their ancestors. The sanctuary is decorated with the pure silver on the most crucial and safety parts. Aluminum was used for the decoration of the rest of the sanctuary areas, instead of using pure silver for the whole building. Inside the sanctuary, each carved wall consists of the stories of Lord Buddha, Buddhist Doctrine, History of Phra Jao Liab Lok and Phra Jao Prod Lok (Thai Buddha’s preaching stories), Buddha’s footprint, and the happiness life in believe of Buddhism. On the other hand, the outside of the sanctuary’s walls are symbols of National Institute, Religion, and Royal Family, 4 Lotuses indicating 4 types of human recognition, Personification, King of Naga, ASEAN countries, World’s famous cities, the King’s literary work; Mahajanaka Jataka, Srithandon, and 12 Zodiac Signs. These stories are shown for the stronger believes in Buddhism. The Silver sanctuary has been established since B.E. 2547 for the first time by group of Lanna craftsman using the local wisdom (Silver Crafts) for the decoration; taken for more than 12 years to be completed, with the donation from all believers as total amount of 35,152,314 Thai Baht (Thirty Five Million One Hundred and Fifty Two Thousand Three Hundred and Fourteen). Finally, the construction of World’s First Silver Sanctuary has been completed and ready for all religious services. It is also be the conservation of Wua Lai Community’s wisdom (Silver Handicraft) as a learning center, as religious teaching method, Life’s navigation for all visitors. The most importantly, we have been completed the determination for this sanctuary to become a National Memorial for Thai people and to praise our His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej (9th monarch of the Chakri Dynasty). Wat Sri Suphan would like to invite all believers and visitors to our opening ceremony of World’s First Silver Sanctuary and the celebration of 720th Year Anniversary of Nophaburi Sri Nakhonping during 28 March – 3 April 2016.

Temple built on what were once a 14th-century monarch's gardens. Today, site of a Buddhist university and a popular spot for photographers, especially during sunset. Some of the temple's chedis (spires) contain ashes of Chiang Mai's royal family. Also, one can see half of a holy Buddhist relic brought from Sukothai in 1371, which unfortunately split into two upon arrival in Chiang Mai. The other half is buried at Doi Suthep. A 500-year-old bronze Buddha image, one of the largest in northern Thailand, is also housed here, in the small hall at the back of the compound.
