- HHLVRUnited States496 contributionsFrustrating experienceI understand that this museum is about the history of Hungary. However all of the exhibits are in Hungarian, with no other translations. When we purchased our tickets, the clerk asked if we wanted an audio guide for an additional cost. We opted not to spend the additional forints thinking the exhibits would also be in English. I think the clerk should advise patrons that the only way to fully experience the museum is with an audio guide if you do not speak Hungarian. Or better yet, why charge extra for a guide? As a result, this was a very frustrating experience that prevented us from fully understanding the history of Hungary. Also, be aware that taking photographs is prohibited.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 October 2023
- Louise SWinscombe, United Kingdom29 contributionsDefinitely worth a visit! We went just after opening at 10am and I’m glad we did as there was a large queue to get in when we left about midday. An extremely interesting and harrowing history surrounds this building. I thought the museum was laid out really well, a lot of thought has been put in to it making it very engaging. We did not have the audio guides but there is A4 sheets in each room in English that give an overview. Also all the videos playing have English subtitles so easy to understand. Not a big deal and maybe it’s a consequence of where they work but the staff were all quite abrasive and a bit miserable. Definitely worth a visit though!Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 17 October 2023
- mamaG20097 contributionsInformative, disturbing and well worth a visit to remind yourself of the fragility of peace and freedom.A rather harrowing but informative couple of hours. Slightly concerned re. Some of the reviews left by others. Museum is in Budapest and therefore the exhibit information is in Hungarian. Like all good museums, they offer an audio guide in many languages. Highly recommend this. Looking at other reviews, the immensity of the topic is lost on those that don’t have the audio guide. (Side note, disappointing that so many British expect everything to be written in English). An opportunity to learn more about an extremely disturbing part of history, made more harrowing by the fact that the building itself was the location of so many horrific acts. Highly recommend a visit here, and no you can’t take photos and I’m im not entirely sure why you’d want to.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 October 2023
- Nikko4MeMilford, Massachusetts5,934 contributionsAnother English speaking tourist opinion...must see to understand what Hungarians had to endureRead some of the reviews after our visit. On a Friday, we arrived about 8 minutes to 10am, so first in line. FYI, you do need to check coats/backpacks/umbrellas but it free. We did not get the audio guide but did read the laminated pages in each of the rooms. They did have many copies of the narrative in English, so we were able to follow along in each room. It took about an hour to walk through the museum and by time we left there was a long line to get your coat/umbrella as there was only one line for dropping off/picking up your items. You do start at the second floor so you climb up the stairs at the beginning and end up on the lowest level. We felt it was an opportunity to learn about the atrocities the Hungarian people had to endure. It is hard to comprehend some of the rooms were actual areas the people were housed in!!! Despite some of the negative reviews, we recommend a visit here to understand the history and why it cannot be repeated. Note: no photos are allowed inside, therefore, no photos to attach to the review.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 November 2023

- ecsouthworthStonington, Connecticut137 contributionsA must see in BudapestDo not miss this museum. Whoever curated this was meticulous and really created the mood. We spent a couple of hours here and it is a must see - provides a thorough history of the Nazi and Soviet regimes and the impact on the Hungarian people. I learned a lot.Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 12 November 2023
- PavelBudapest, Hungary42 contributionsMust seeYou have to be aware, that certain amount of propaganda is included (white-washing of Horty’s regime, shifting all guilt to Nazis and arrow cross party only), which is, why it does not have 5* average. But it is still a highly educational masterpiece. Well collected, narated, many personal stories… you cannot learn more about the arrow cross party and communists and even the current Orban regime views on history (this museum was personally commissioned by him), just take it as one point of view only and you are fine. The torture chambers in underground are still preserved.Visited March 2023Travelled soloWritten 17 November 2023
- MoggySuUnited Kingdom19 contributionsRecommended interactive museumThis is defo worth a visit, especially if you want to appreciate the history of Hungary. 2.5 hours duration (for me). There are note cards in the rooms in multiple languages, and the films playing have English subtitles (when we visited at least) and are worth watching. You also get given a pamphlet with some info with your ticket. TOP TIP: you don't need the headset if you can read English or Hungarian! We hired them based on reviews from English speakers here but disagree it's necessary. It's more distracting with everything else in the room tbh and wasn't worth paying the extra.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 November 2023
- Laurie5 contributionsShakenProbably the most powerful museums I've ever been to. I feel shaken and affected by the experience and I sensed on arriving in Budapest a sort of seriousness, a strange atmosphere and now I understand why. Many people will remember these times.Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 19 November 2023
- FamilynFunMelbourne, Australia125 contributionsDO NOT VISIT ON A SCHOOL DAYWe were looking forward to this museum, after visiting the communism museum in Prague. Clearly a lot more money has been spent on this museum but the explanations are not as useful to non Hungarians and, by comparison, the museum in Prague was extremely user friendly to other nationalities. Perhaps this is because the House of Terror is intended to primarily educate Hungarians about their past. I left disappointed partly because we had the misfortune to arrive between two big school groups, and every room was extremely crowded. It was also very hard to focus with guides on microphones in each of the small exhibit spaces killing any chance of reflection or solemnity. While the education of young people is paramount, perhaps other people could be advised to return at a later time to ensure everyone’s optimal experience. In summary, if you only have time for one of these and need to choose between the Prague Communism Museum and the Budapest House of Terror, I would recommend Prague. And definitely, don’t visit on a school day.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 November 2023

- Hungarian National Museum HotelsThe history of Hungary and its people through the ages is covered in many magnificent exhibits and works of art. Count Ferenc Széchényi, one of Hungary’s most eminent aristocrats offered his collection of books, maps and medals for the benefit of hisbeloved country in 1802. His example had been followed by many- the Palatine himself, aristocrats, citizens, fellow Hungarians and even some counties! What we call today the Hungarian National Museum had evolved from these donations. The construction of one of the most beautiful classicist palaces of Hungary began in 1837 based on the plans of Mihály Pollack. By 1846, exhibitions had beensetup in the building. On 15th March 1848 the revolutionary youth of the era declared its ideas of freedom from the stairs of the museum. These ideas then formed the basis of societal reforms and modernisation taking place in Hungary.Read more
