- GlasneyCornwall_UK23 contributionsOther visitors to Vienna will offer advice on the best museum to visit and our advice is this one. The building itself was built to house the collection of the Hapsburg dynasty and gives you a clear idea of the quantity and quality of the art various Royal members added to the collection over time. This is not a place for a short visit, but 2-3 leisurely hours is sufficient to appreciate the core of the collection. We paused half way in our visit to to have a drink in the cafe- the setting is stunning and a good way to reflect on what you have seen so far. The collections are not cluttered and the lighting of the displays brings out the best. Plenty of comfy sofas in the picture galleries to take in everything and lockers where you can unload coats and bags to allow you to enjoy the amble around without being weighed down. Perhaps not quite the Uffizzi but not far off.Visited February 2025Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 February 2025
- Brianyeofanclub38 contributionsWe attended the Rembrant exhibition, which was superb. So many of his paintings plus others by his contemporary/ student Hoogsraten. Also Rubens and many other interesting artists. This took us 3-4 hours , we also hired an audio device which gave the background to the painting and the painter for each picture. We had two issues which prevented us giving the museum 5 stars. 1. We had purchased our tickets online from the museum, and had managed to print out the details showing ticket numbers, price paid, type of ticket. When we presented these at the entrance, we were told we had to obtain another ticket from a booth outside if the museum( why?) . We did this but had ti go to the back of the queue which was galling as we had arrived early and had been at the front of the queue. What an unnecessary waste of our time and what a silly process. 2. After looking at the paintings we were flagging a bit for convenience we decided to get some refreshments in the museum cafe. We had to queue up for 20-15 mins to be given a table, then another 10mins to be seated by a sniddy waiter who made a sarcastic comment when i asked him if he spoke english It seemed all of the waiters were swanning around showing a complete lack of any sense of urgency , all parties were given two tables rather than one, effectively reducing the number of available places and leaving the cafe only half full. Eventually we paid after having to wait 10mins for the same waiter to provide a bill( which had been requested at least 5 times to him and other waiters ) he then complained to me for my abruptness and that he had to serve other customers.I explained , that we needed to leave to catch our shuttle bus so could not afford to waste any more time. I was exasperated by thier attitude and poor service which would not be tolerated in the real world of a commercial cafe/ restaurant, thier focus should be on the customer and the customers convenienceVisited November 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 November 2024
- ScribeUKBromley, United Kingdom65 contributionsAn amazing art collection with a masterpiece in every room but focused very much on Old Masters - essentially 16th century Italian, Spanish and Flemish art. Well worth investing in an audio guide. I spent 5 hours in the museum and only saw the artworks - I gave the Egyptian/Greek/Roman remains a miss and whizzed through the Kunstkammer. The only downside was a ticket queue outside during Storm Boris which had no shelter whatsoever and which moved at a snail's pace meaning that I was drenched by the time I got into the museum.Visited September 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 20 September 2024
- Carlo ColomboMilan, Italy1,885 contributionsKunsthistorisches Museum Vienna... Just the intro with Bernini's statue placed in front of the entrance staircase upstairs would be worth the cost of the ticket. Truly negligible cost that, if you then add that for minors or students it is reduced to zero, you will understand how much it is worth not missing this visit. Bernini, in fact, Caravaggio, Carraci, Bruegel, Raphael, Arcimboldo, Canaletto, Rubens, Parmigianino, Van Dyck, Klimt, Cellini, Gentileschi... and dozens and dozens of other "sacred monsters" of world painting and sculpture. Particularly beautiful are the works of Flemish painters, very dear to me. Our experience was then enriched, for a measly couple of euros more, by the extra exhibition on Rembrandt and Hoogstraten ("Color and Illusion). A real godsend with exceptional works that in no other way than in presence you could appreciate so fully (I would spend hours watching the girl in the frame...). Reality, illusion, fantasy... If I was convinced that our visit to the Kunsthistorisches Museum would be exceptional I had to change my mind and realize that I had also underestimated the global experience. At that point the various other rooms dedicated to the collections of Ancient and Egyptian-Eastern Art were almost one more so much so that you were satisfied with everything seen until the time to enter. Honestly, then I didn't even think about the, so-called, "Cabinet Numismatics," so I don't even know if it was open or not. We went out at the closing (6:00 pm) really satolls of artwork. For the rest: site kept exceptionally well, extremely friendly and cooperative staff, even when you pinch to take pictures of works where it is forbidden to do so (but gee: highlight it better the prohibition that that poor icon with a bar on the camera put to report it is not noticeable at all!), convenient free wardrobe (there is also one for a fee... for those who want to throw money...) and toilets always clean and clean (in almost 5 hours of stay I saw them clean several times and in any case I always found them in excellent condition when used). A museum if not "model" very suitable for visitors and with hundreds of points of interest for every taste. I don't understand most negative comments: really people should have more sense of self-criticism when writing a review. Absolutely worth seeing if you pass in the area, perhaps even before everything else, Schönbrunn Castle included.Visited January 2025Travelled with familyWritten 14 January 2025
- TripInsiderSouthwest Gulf Coast, Florida296 contributionsA first visit for all of us! We purchased admission tickets online a few months ahead. We did not purchase audio guides, a tour, or tickets to the special exhibit, and still enjoyed the Museum. Tickets were for admission anytime, not for a specific time slot. We arrived about 2:30 pm Saturday, joined moderate crowds. We went specifically to view the Bruegel room. The paintings were awesome, but the display offered only the most basic English descriptions. To enhance our experience, we bought an English copy of Bruegel in the museum gift shop. I also spotted the Klimt frescoes in the upper corners of the main staircase; binoculars would help! There is much to see if your schedule allows another hour or two! Entrance was behind a busy Christmas Market. Even with market crowds, walk from Hofburg was under 10 minutes. Look at the museum website before your visit if you wish to focus on highlights. Pick up the museum map at the entrance. We carried our coats. Main staircase has a lot of very wide stairs!Visited December 2024Travelled with familyWritten 1 January 2025
- foodlovertravelUnited Kingdom52 contributionsThe Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna is truly amazing and incredibly beautiful. Compared to museums in the UK, it has fewer crowds, allowing for a much more relaxing and immersive experience. The grand architecture and stunning exhibits make it a must-visit for art and history lovers. One of the highlights of our visit was the museum’s restaurant, where we enjoyed a very nice lunch at a surprisingly reasonable price. The ambiance was elegant, and the quality of the food was excellent. Overall, it was a fantastic experience—great art, a peaceful atmosphere, and a delicious meal all in one place.Visited February 2025Travelled with friendsWritten 15 March 2025
- Paul OCounty Monaghan, Ireland6,461 contributionsI took advantage of the late Thursday night opening (open until 9pm on Thursday) to enjoy this fabulous museum. The building itself is magnificent and spread over two floors there is so much to see. I started in the Egyptian area on the first floor and worked my way up to the picture gallery on the second. I spent 3 very happy and content hours here and only for fatigue kicking in I could have spend longer.Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten 19 May 2024
- Littledumpling12Queensland, Australia117 contributionsWe bought tickets online for the official website the day before, it was easy enough to do. And on the day of the visit, we didn't have to wait long to get inside at all. This museum itself is a very beautiful piece of architecture, both exterior and interior. Because of the hype of the cafe inside, we went to have dessert and drinks in the afternoon. Didn't make a reservation, but got in easily. However the afternoon drinks place is by the window only, not under the amazing dome. By the time we finished our drinks and dessert, staff were setting up dinner tables under the dome, it looked beautiful.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 July 2024
- robikopUithoorn, The Netherlands956 contributionsI always thought that the Hermitage in St. Louis was Petersburg, the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum in NYC and the National Gallery in London are the classic top museums in the world with the Prado (Madrid) and the Vatican Museums as runners up. But after a visit to the Kunsthistorisch Museum in Vienna, I now think very differently. If this museum does not belong to the absolute top then that is close to it. The building itself is already magnificent and the collection is magnificent. Especially when it comes to the Flemish masters. I thought that nothing could beat the collection of Flemish masters in Prado but I changed my mind on that too. And they only cover a very small part of the collection. Because of the bad weather in all of Austria we spent a whole afternoon in the Art History Museum but that actually turned out to be far from sufficient to have a good look at everything.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 October 2024
- clemence_kPhiladelphia, Pennsylvania441 contributionsWell, the building alone is a piece of art. Likely our visit was easier due to time of year/less crowds. Yet the artifacts, accessibility and then the incredible works of art in the second floor picture gallery - we never made it to the third floor as we had another event to get to and had to leave, yet the layout was superlative. The only odd aspect was we wanted to grab a bite at the restaurant in the early afternoon and - there was a line waiting to be seated - so we left. What do they do in the busy season? Anyway so many great options in Vienna.Visited January 2025Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 January 2025
