Hotels near Christiania

This hippy enclave and alternative community in the heart of Copenhagen is home to many artists and artisans. Here, you can wonder at colorful street art all around, and stop by cozy cafes for some top-notch craft beers. Enjoy the area’s bohemian vibes as you hunt for offbeat handicrafts, and go for a walk around the lake or stroll down the infamous Pusher Street—where you’ll be required to put your camera away. During warmer months, this neighborhood is a great spot for some outdoor, waterside fun. Christiania is more welcoming to travelers during the day. – Tripadvisor

A unique concept so definitely worth the visit. It is fairly close to many other popular Danish sites, so worth a gentle stroll through, taking in the graffiti & artworks. At the entrance of Christiania, there is a shop that showcases some handmade items, and also a cafe that I would highly recommend spending some time in. It’s a very relaxed atmosphere, the food and drink prices and very reasonable, staff are super friendly, and there is a selection of board games that are available for use during your visit.

I strongly wanted to visit this neighborhood that I discovered on the guides and was very intrigued. You enter in a fantastic, different way that you would never expect. There are shops, bars, restaurants (court food style) and markets. We, unfortunately, went in the late afternoon and so we just took the opportunity to have a good aperitif. We could still talk, with our very school English, with several people some tourists like us but also some residents, and we had a great time. Attendees of Cristiania are of different ages: from the young to the slightly older person. But the great thing is that no one cares about your age, how you dress and what language you speak. You sit at the tables and start talking to those next to you or at the table next to you. That's great! In the evening there are live concerts and certainly the neighborhood comes alive much more.

Walked around Christiania for about an hour, didn't feel unsafe at any time, people that live there seemed to go about their daily life with tourist walking around. They don't like you to take photos of residents, and in main area they have people asking you to stop taking photos. Few places to buy food and drinks and other items clothes etc. Some of the Graffiti art interesting. Being a free thing to do, and the uniqueness to this neighborhood I would recommend visiting, if short on time, then give it a miss.

AMAZING experience! I don't think I will be able to express the feelings that this place left me. Time seems to have stood still decades ago, an independent community in the heart of a modern and avant-garde city. An essential village in which there is a simple and civil regulation. A movie set atmosphere... BUT IT'S ALL TRUE!

I’ve thought for a long time about whether and what to write about my visit to Christiania. The truth is, I was genuinely shocked when I entered and walked around. Copenhagen is known for its architecture, design, and cleanliness. In Christiania, however, there is graffiti everywhere, and the buildings have seen better days; they are starting to fall apart. There are no bricks or pavement on the streets or paths - just bare earth. I have visited some so-called third world countries, even communist ones where people are truly unfree to leave. It genuinely puzzles me that some people would choose to live under such conditions and call it freedom, especially for themselves and their children. In my opinion, it’s a self-made choosen prison that deteriorates a little more every day. Do I recommend visiting Christiania? Yes, I do. People need to see firsthand why communism and neo-Marxism fail and will continue to fail without a foundation in God.

Freetown Christiana, located just outside Copenhagen, is a community that operates independently. This place stands out for its own rules and hippie vibe. Felt safe at all times while exploring this interesting neighborhood. Its vibrant colors, street art, great sense of freedom and creativity make it unique. The people of the community are nice and friendly as long as you are respectful and follow their rules. It was an enjoyable experience and definitely worth the visit!

Definitely go there, but you will be done within 1 hour. Coincidentally, there were also some concerts/DJs on Saturday, so it was very nice. It is also strange to walk around as a tourist and 'watch monkeys' in such a residential area, where people have their private lives.

We really liked it! It exceeded our expectations... A green city focused on sustainability and thinking about the future, the first capital neutral in carbon emissions by 2025, with almost no pollution as there are 5 bicycles for 4 people, everything super clean, which allows for a clearly better quality of life. Numerous terraces, bars, gardens. We visited the points of interest that we found most relevant in cultural terms, as well as the free city of Christiania and the Port of Nyhavn, which are unmissable. We took a boat trip through the canals, which was really worth it, as well as a bus trip. I highly recommend it!

Just a weird place full of weird people! If you walk around the entire district, the more interesting areas were the residential ones (as opposed to the "downtown" district) as it is possible to see how the homes have been put together and maintained, often by the residents doing their own work or trading services with their compatriots. Some residents are carpenters, others plumbers, etc. (though perhaps self-trained ones!) and they can share their know-how. The downtown area itself is a bit tacky and very much caters to tourists as opposed to the residents, so it is like a funky downscale art scene with some bars and cheap eats.

Copenhagen's Nyhaven, or "New Harbor," is actually steeped in a long heritage. Colorful buildings line the canal and hint at a history of small-vessel traffic. Like many ports, this strip has a salty history, rich with sailors, drinking and literary exploits. Danish author Hans Christian Andersen made his home in Nyhavn as well. It's cleaned up now and is a lovely place for a stroll.

  • The Round Tower Hotels
The Round Tower Lookout Tower – Observatory – Exhibitions – Concerts. One of the best-known and most popular structures in Denmark, the Round Tower has been a distinctive feature of the Copenhagen skyline since 1642. The Tower once soared far above the rest of the rooftops in the city, and University astronomers studied the stars and planets from the Observatory at the top. The scholars may have forsaken the building a long time ago, but during the winter visitors are still able to gaze at the cosmos from Europe's oldest functioning observatory. The platform that runs around the outside of the Observatory affords views over the old Latin Quarter – from here, you can spot most of the city's famous buildings. The Round Tower does not have an elevator, so visitors have to climb the winding, white-washed Spiral Walk, where kids often hide in the niches, only to jump out shouting “boo!” as adults approach. Halfway up the tower is the entrance to the large and stunningly beautiful Library Hall, which now serves as a popular gallery and concert venue. It hosts several exhibitions a year, and stages concerts almost every week. Above the Library is the Bell Loft, notable for its enormous wooden beams, which were used in the reconstruction of the Tower following the great fire of Copenhagen in 1728. The Loft is also home to a small exhibition of fascinating artefacts from the Tower's history, including Christian IV's wax seal, a tin of medicine produced by Tycho Brahe, and a piece of the bomb that exploded in the Library Hall during the bombardment of Copenhagen in 1807.The Round Tower was built by Christian IV between 1637 and 1642. It was the first part of the Trinitatis Complex, which combined church, library and observatory in a single building.

Christiansborg Palace is situated on the little island of Slotsholmen (Castle Island) which is surrounded by canals in the heart of Denmark's capital, Copenhagen. Denmark has one of the oldest monarchies in the world, and the palace has a long, dramatic history which revolves around the exercise of royal power. Today, Denmark is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system of governance. Under its beautiful copper roof, the palace houses the Danish parliament, the office of the Danish prime minister and the Supreme Court. It is therefore the center for legislative, executive and judicial power in Denmark. The palace also accommodates rooms for the Danish Monarchy. Focusing on the royal part of the palace, Christiansborg Palace is H.M. the Queen's working palace. This is where the Queen holds audiences, signs laws, holds banquets and receptions, celebrates royal anniversaries and receives state visits. It is a working palace where old traditions and the modern Royal Family meet. You will see dazzling halls, adorned with colorful tapestries, vast paintings, patterned floors, glittering chandeliers, and sumptuous stucco ceilings. You can explore The Royal Kitchen and see its two tons of shiny copper kitchenware. You can visit the beautiful palace chapel, stand underneath its dome and let your head spin as you gaze up at the angels in the ceiling décor more than 30 metres above you. In The Royal Stables you'll find the the white royal horses in the wintertime, and in the summertime the exhibition "All the kings' horses" - all year around you can see the Royal Family's array of carriages. One of them is coated with 24-carat gold leaf. You can also explore the underground ruins underneath Christiansborg Palace. These are ruins of earlier castles and palaces showing that the Castle Island is steeped in 800 years of power and political intrigue.
