You’ll need a raincoat and lots of layers to survive Yorkshire’s cold, wet winters, but Scarborough makes it worth your while with moody scenery, holiday fun, and quirky local traditions.
In December, hit up Scarborough’s two holiday markets—one outside along the pedestrian-only streets in the town center, the other tucked away inside the handsome Market Hall.
Join in offbeat Boxing Day traditions, like a charity soccer match between fishermen and firemen in which both sides wear crazy hats and a regatta of homemade rafts barely staying afloat on the harbor.
Spot the Milky Way without a telescope on clear nights at Dalby Forest, a Dark Sky Discovery Site that’s part of the North York Moors National Park. Amateur astrologists can also head to Scarborough for its Dark Skies Festival in February and March.
No, it’s not quite beach season yet—you’ll still encounter some wet, chilly days in spring. But that doesn’t keep surfers out of the water, nor does it stop festival season from swinging into gear throughout the region. Even with that activity, hotel rates will be lower and crowds stay relatively thin until June.
Walks through fields of wildflowers are the perfect cure for a long, gray winter. Head to the South Cliff Gardens to immerse yourself in tulips, crocuses, and flowering trees, or go to Farndale to view wild daffodils along the River Dove.
After the winter swells have calmed a bit, Scarborough becomes a prime surfing destination in the spring. There are plenty of surf schools that can suit you up and get you out on the water.
Take a 45-minutes drive to charming Malton, inside of North York Moors National Park. The town has gained a reputation as a foodie destination, and hosts a massive food festival in May.
Scarborough is at its busiest—and some would say best—during the summer. Visitors flock to sights like Scarborough Castle, the city center buzzes day and night, and the two beautiful beaches are packed with sun seekers. Book ahead, because prices and demand are far higher this time of year.
Embrace Scarborough’s seaside vibes and tuck into the perfect fish and chips at Lifeboat Fish Bar, just a block from the north end of Scarborough Beach.
Scarborough’s cultural calendar is packed in the summer, and there’s no better way to join in the fun than attending a performance by the Scarborough Orchestra at one of the U.K.’s only seaside concert halls, historic Scarborough Spa.
Traveling with kids? Bring them to Luna Park, Alpamare, or the North Yorkshire Water Park where they can spend the day squealing.
Rain picks up in the fall, but the scenery is still lovely during this season. Despite the sometimes less-than-ideal weather, you’ll find plenty of events still on the calendar.
Music lovers shouldn’t miss Scarborough Jazz Festival. The beloved annual event is usually held in late September at the beautiful Scarborough Spa.
If you love a good scare, make the 35-minute drive north to Whitby, home to the spectacular ruins of 7th-century Whitby Abbey. Rumored to be haunted, it was the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
Late summer and fall are the best times to watch minke whales off the North Yorkshire Coast. Numerous whale-watching boats depart from towns like Whitby and Staithes, which are 30 to 60 minutes away by car.
