Cannaregio Hotels

Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, β€œterra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.

Love this area to stay and visit
We stayed in this area in an Airbnb and it was wonderful. The area is nice it’s quieter but also busy at times on the weekend nights but it’s nice to see that wonderful shops and wonderful restaurants. Lots to see and do but getting out of the busy areas of St Mark is nice so this was perfect! Highly recommend this area as the vaporetto is close by as well so easy to get anywhere.

Best Part of Venice to Stay in!
The best area of Venice to stay in. Quiet, residential and half the cost of other areas. Easy 25 minute walk to San Marco and right next to the train station / piazzale Roma for transport links.

Peaceful, tranquil and yet thought provoking
A fascinating place just to wander around. Away from the main tourist spots and considerably quieter yet still as attractive to those who want to amble. I wish that we had found more time to go inside some of the seven synagogues and compare but sadly it was too late in our day to do so. I would recommend, or if I ever get to go to Venice again, a three hour allowance to visit this area in more detail. It certainly deserves it.

    Excellent Neighborhood
One of the most picturesque neighborhoods in the city. Come here to get lost wandering the streets, and then you emerge at a canal. Lots of places to eat and drink. But you will encounter big crowds as everyone wants to come to Venice.

Well worth a Place to Stay and Visit
Just as you exit the train station turn left and walk down the narrow street, Rio Terra Lista di Spagna, where you will find shops, restaurants and many hotels and BBs. This was the perfect place to stay for access to the many vaporetto routes, the bridge into Santa Croce and beyond. Plus you don't need to cross any bridges to get to some of the accommodations with your luggage. The neighborhood continues into a large, spacious campo ( square) and the community known as the Jewish Ghetto. The area is filled with many cafes and eateries that line the smaller canals, popular in the late afternoon and evening. Well worth a visit with wonderful design, fewer tourists and more local residents.

A very interesting part of Venice
We explored the area by using the Explorial app that you can download, it was very insightful and enjoyable. Starting in the historic Jewish Quarter (the oldest ghetto in Europe) we then discovered churches and locations associated with the artist Tintoretto. A lovely way to spend a few hours at your own pace.

  • San Marco Hotels
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.

  • Castello Hotels
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.

  • Dorsoduro / Accademia Hotels
Artsy is the defining mood of this neighbourhood with street artists, students, painters, sculptors, restorers, curators, historians, collectors, heirs and heiresses rubbing elbows. Peggy Guggenheim's collection, now a museum, lures chic locals for evening art aperitifs. Traditionalists and visionaries cocoon in bohemian luxury. La Salute basilica buttresses the neighbourhood to the east. Gondolas bob in the morning light. The Accademia Bridge crosses the Grand Canal. A back street doubles as basketball court. Palaces house residents, or like Ca' Foscari a university, or a museum like Ca’ Rezzonico that attracts Venetians for concerts. Dorsoduro reveals its industrial roots too, in buildings converted to house university departments or exhibitions. Campo Santa Margherita bursts with youthful energy from local students. Foot traffic bustles to and from Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia train station. Evening commuters pause for an aperitivo. Neighbours exchange confidants in a campo (square) on their way to market.

  • San Polo Hotels
The Rialto Bridge is the most famous sight along the Grand Canal in San Polo, smallest of Venice's six sestieri (districts) and by far the busiest neighbourhood. Morning Venetians arrive to peruse the markets for fish, fruit and vegetables, while shops display goods from cheese to wine to desserts. San Silvestro and Rialto Market vaporetto (water taxi) stops add to the steady stream of foot traffic. San Polo is defined by churches including Basilica dei Frari, one of the most important churches sought by art lovers.

  • Giudecca Hotels
Giudecca is a retreat for Venetians away from the crowds. Symbolically, six metal teeth represent Venice’s six sestieri (districts); the seventh, Guidecca, points away from the others – part of Dorsoduro, but separated by the Giudecca Canal. Giudecca evolved from a center of shipyards and factories to a quiet residential area with a sprinkling of restaurants and bars. The majestic harmonious Redentore church stands as thanks for delivering Venice from the plague, hosting an annual heartfelt festival.
