Take our word for it: Bournemouth and the Dorset Coast can be magical in the winter. And it remains a seaside getaway, even when the days grow cold, dark, and frequently rainy. You wonβt get in the ocean, but you can gaze over the shoreline, stroll by the waters, or even soar over the waves.
If youβre fearless in the face of icy temperatures, blustery winds, and suspended heights, try Bournemouth Pierβs pier-to-shore zipline where you soar above the crashing waves before landing safely.
Get in the holiday spirit during Bournemouthβs Christmas Tree Wonderland. Stroll right through the townβs towering tree in a tunnel of lights, speed past in a sleigh, or glide by on ice skates. It goes from mid-November to early January.
This city is a destination for music lovers, and two excellent venues offering year-round eventsβBournemouth International Centre and the Pavilion Theatreβkeep things going with live entertainment all winter.
Spring is a great time of year to visit, as the string of parks that run along the River Bourne launch into full bloom. While youβll find some crowdsβespecially during the spring half-term breakβyouβll also get relatively dry skies and warmer temps.
Get your flower fix at Lower Gardens and Central Gardens, separated by a busy public plaza locals just call βThe Square.β The Rhododendron Walk is particularly scenic, lined with white, pink, and purple blooms.
If youβre feeling brave, take a brisk walk to Old Harry Rocksβthree chalk-cliff formations that sit just offshore from the South West Coastal Path.
For a more laid-back way to take in the scenery, cyclists can hire a bike and set out on the Bourne Valley Greenway, which begins near the ocean, meanders through the center of town, then heads out into the countryside.
Busloads, carloads, and trainloads of Brits head to Bournemouth every summer, when a carnival-like atmosphere takes over. Youβll pay a premium for hotel rooms when the cityβs capacity is pushed to the limit, but the tradeoff is that thereβs a long list of summertime activities that donβt cost a penny.
Besides all the obvious beachy activities, Bournemouth is a great place to try water sports like surfing, sea kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding.
Join the swirl of activity around Bournemouth Pier, where kid-friendly rides will put smiles on everyoneβs faces all summer long.
Head to The Square for Bournemouthβs Summer Live festivities, including local food, live music, and family-friendly events.
If youβre up for a day trip, the Jurassic Coast is just west of town and a pretty incredible sight to see. Along with the occasional fossil, youβll find huge coastal cliffs and rolling moorland hills.
Many locals nominate fall as Bournemouthβs most beloved season thanks to its relatively warm temperatures all the way into October. (And when you add all the foliage to the mix, itβs kinda hard to argue.)
Fall colors run riot at New Forest National Park, so this is the perfect time to wander its woodland trails. In mid-September, you may spot local pigs foraging for the acorns that drop from the oak and beech trees.
Bournemouth Arts By the Sea takes over town at the beginning of October. Dazzling light installations and more than 100 performances around the city keeps things lively well into the fall.
When the days are wet (as is typical this time of year), head indoors for a dose of culture. The Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum, with its collection of sculptures and paintings depicting elegant Victorian style, can keep history buffs busy for hours.

- Lower GardensUpper, Central and Lower Gardens have all been Green Flag winners since 1999 and run from Bournemouth pier to the boundary with Poole. The gardens are 3 kilometres long. They are all part of the Bourne Valley Greenway and are Listed Grade II in the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens. There are lots of activities and events taking place, or you can simply enjoy the scenery. Find out more about the history of the gardens here. The Lower Gardens This section of the gardens is quite short, it runs from the pier to the town centre, but there is always lots going on. Year-round attractions include Classic mini golf, a bandstand, refreshment kiosks and Street food corner site, an aviary, and art exhibition. Seasonal events in this section of the gardens attract thousands of visitors. In 2018 the gardens became the main setting for the Christmas Tree Wonderland.Read more
