Enjoyed our stay at the Sunset Hotel. Beautiful views and a great host/owner who made a delicious breakfast each morning. The property felt very safe. The rooms (at least our's on the garden side) was very basic, almost similar to a hostel. We had a little problem with flies in our bathroom, but other than that the room was clean....

We loved the Sunset Hotel. Vitalis, the proprietor, is seriously one of the nicest people I've ever met. He's lived in the area for 50 years and knows every square mile. Clean place, very affordable, up from the road so little traffic noise. Nice nature path on the property; lovely dining room for the free breakfast. I would request a...

We enjoyed our stay at this hotel. We had a cozy room with one double bed, a night stand, a small table, and a closet area -- and a bathroom. This was all that we needed. It was great to stand on the veranda with the other guests and watch the sunset. We saw agoutis and pizotes. There is a...

The other reviews say it all - a perfect host, fabulous views and clean comfortable rooms. The 'trail' through the grounds was a perfect way to start the day before breakfast and shouldn't be missed. One word of caution - the track up to the hotel is very steep making it a good 20 min walk back from the two...

We stayed a couple of nights. Room was nice, and very clean. Vitalis was a great host - we enjoyed talking to him and sharing stories. He was also a great resource for the area attractions and places to save a few dollars while getting good value. Nice extras were the really fast internet (can be fairly weak at some...

We stayed here for one night to see the cloud rainforest and go on a coffee/night tour. It was the perfect place to see the sunset and get some much needed sleep after a red eye. The host was great to talk to and gave us some helpful tips for our drive to Playa Grande. The breakfast that was included...

We had a great welcome by the owner Vitalis, a middle-aged man who has lived there for 50 years. He sure knows the place and the area : he drew us a very simple-but very accurate- map to drive down to the PanAm 1 via the most scenic drive we took during our stay in CR! thank you again Vitalis...

we arrived and was greeted by the super friendly host. He immediately asked what our upcoming plans were and promptly drew out a map for us with key points around town. There was a couple rooms available when we arrived and he gave us the option of either which was very nice. there is an AMAZING view of the sunset...

Our 2 night stay was great, Tours organised for us, great suggestions of what to do and how, delicious breakfast and the most stunning views. The room was basic but clean and the 3 beds suited our family of 4 perfectly.

If you are heading to Monteverde for the jungle and adventure, but appreciate some quality downtime I wholeheartedly recommend the Sunset Hotel. Owner / manager Vitalis Mengel was the quintessential jovial host for whom nothing was too much trouble. He arranged our sightseeing bookings with ease and made breakfasts to order, served along with the fabulous local fruit bread and...
