We booked the family cabin (room 1) at Monteverde Inn and couldn’t have been happier. It had a little kitchenette, but the food at the cafe was so delicious and had such a great atmosphere that we always went there for our meals. My kids were excited about the bunk beds (they’re just so deprived!), and we were excited about having a separate bedroom. There is no TV and no air conditioning, but neither are necessary when you’re here.

The hot water heaters are solar so the best time to shower is in the evening, which is perfect after a day of adventure. I don’t know exactly how they work, but we always had plenty of hot water for all 4 of us to shower well after dark. Not so much in the morning.

Our kids were happy just running around their open grassy area that overlooks a valley and a gorgeous spot for watching the sunset. We hiked the Valle Escondido preserve during the day and loved that the trailhead was only steps from our room. But we saw a capuchin and a few coatis without even having to go anywhere! My husband and daughter decided at the last minute to do the night tour one night and they loved every second of that too. They came back with a huge list of animals they saw, most of them just outside our room!

We felt like we’d made a great choice in places to stay when we realized a lot of people were coming to the Monteverde Inn from other places just to eat at the cafe or to do the night tour. We loved every second of our time there and only wish we’d stayed there longer.

My family of five just returned from our trip to Costa Rica, and we spent one memorable night at the Monteverde Inn. I would highly recommend this hotel, as long as you go in with correct expectations. The grounds are beautiful. You are surrounded by nature and wildlife. The staff is super friendly and accommodating. The food/drinks at the restaurant were great and reasonably priced. We also loved their emphasis on sustainability.

The only negative were the rooms themselves. There was plenty of space, and with two sets of bunk beds, more than enough beds to keep everyone in my family happy. That said, there were no creature comforts. There were bugs in the towels/bedding. There are multiple windows in the room for airflow, but because they can't get fully covered, we woke up super early when the sun came up. The rooms were also very loud. We could hear our neighbors when they came in for the night or started getting ready in the morning. My kids loved it and said it felt like camping, but between the bugs, noise, and light, it wasn't a great night of sleep.

One recommendation I would have is to rent a car. I was a little scared driving to Monteverde because of the notoriously bad roads, but it was much easier now with the 606 being fully paved. Having a car made getting to/from the hotel and our various activities super easy. If you didn't have a car, the hotel location would be a little isolated from Santa Elena/Monteverde.

My husband and I had a wonderful stay at the Monteverde Inn in February 2020. From the moment you step onto the grounds you are blown away by the most stunning view of the mountains, the Nicoya Gulf and the peninsula beyond. The lawn was perfect for catching the afternoon sun and relaxing until sunset. We saw a rainbow nearly every morning. As a guest, you have access to the Escondido Preserve, which has well marked, clear trails and stunning views. There’s also a serene hammock area tucked away. The room was simple and clean, and breakfast was typical (eggs, rice and beans, toast, fruit, coffee). It is very windy so I recommend packing layers to enjoy the lawn and restaurant. Overall, we loved this place and hope to come back one day!

We planned 3 nights at the “Inn” but only stayed 2. The property was beautiful and the surrounding trails/forest were tranquil however the rooms were bare bones. Basically a 8x8 box with a bed. The walls were paper thin , I could clearly hear our neighbors talking softly and if someone went to the toilet, well you get it. There was no hot water for a shower either day. The free breakfast was nasty , cold scrambled eggs with bland rice and beans. They did have nice fruit if there was any left and the toast was good. Everything was picked up at 0830 and if you wanted another cup of coffee you were SOL. When I mentioned the hot water issue as we were checking out early, I told them about it the previous day, the owner suddenly appeared and seemed surprised there was an issue. All of a sudden he changes the subject and starts giving us tips about local wildlife etc.. where has he been the last 2 days ? He wound up paying for my bar bill , 2 beers ! Oh boy. Also note they are building an addition attached to the main housing so there is construction noise to deal with also. If you want to stay there lower your expectations to camping conditions. J/C. Monteverde Inn is down a rocky side street and then down a relatively steep drive. A half-open gate with a guard, who never challenged us, gave the illusion of security, although it didn’t seem that it was needed. The proprietor greeted us warmly and gave us a short talk about the property, which included trails through their own forest. He arranged a guided walk through the cloud forest reserve the following morning (7:30 am start). Our room has a queen bed, work table with chairs, ceiling fan, but no coffee maker, fridge, or TV. It’s cool at this elevation, so A/C is not necessary. Our neighbors had a coffee maker but no coffee. The shower was spacious, but water pressure wasn’t very strong. When we departed for our trek in the cloud forest, we made sure our drapes were pulled closed and the room locked up. When we returned around 11:00, housekeeping had been in the room and opened the curtains so everyone could see that nobody was home, and the big window to the hallway had been opened. I’m concerned with security when travelling, and found this to be unacceptable, especially because there is no in-room safe. It would have been a very simple matter for someone to push the screen in and step through the opening. All the people working there were friendly and very accommodating. Gustavo, the bartender, knew everyone’s name in our group of eight people. We’d definitely stay there again if in the area, but keep our valuables with us rather than leave them in the room.

The location of this property is fantastic, the views are beautiful and you really are right in nature. We travelled as two families with four children under 10, this property is great for them as there are toys in reception that they can take onto the grass and play freely whilst we sit and have a drink. The breakfasts were hit and miss, some days better than others. The accommodation is clean and adequate but not fancy. You are right in there with nature, we had monkeys on the balcony trying to get into our rooms, the trails are fantastic for great walks, and if you have a car you can easily pop into town for shops and restaurants. The onsite restaurant was good and the owner very environmentally aware and available. We loved it, if you are happy to have a more basic accommodation and wish to be connected to nature and in an ecofriendly hotel this is the place for you. If you are looking for luxury maybe not.

Traveled Dic 2019 with a family group of 15 people.

Accommodations
All rooms are the same size and style. 1 double bed, 1 cabin bed with bathroom. The place is well taken care of, clean and in good condition. Double bed was comfortable, sheets were clean. There are no bad points to remark but the fact that the place is a bit rustic and has no renewals.

Bathroom
It was ok, the shower faucet was not in good conditions, we reported it at the end of the stay when asked about improvement points. Good ventilation, hot water, etc. All good. Clean!

Style
This place is a green, simple, relaxing and with good service. They have recycling program; produce some products for the restaurant. They have walking trails and very nice viewpoints. For guests only and unfortunately not for handicap people (rooms are well suited for handicap people thou)

The service is good, staff members are very friendly.

Restaurant
They have a limited menu, but they are also willing to prepare different dishes for you (ask the personnel they will be nice and honest!. The meal had a great taste, prices are below average, and you can enjoy different meals. NO sodas, local craft beer and coffee is great.

Walking trails
It’s a must, go to the hammocks! enjoy your time and views. They have VERY nice places.

Other
Good parking, fireplace where you can watch the ocean and sunset. They have their own restaurant, it’s secure. I do recommend this place unless you are expecting something fancy or so.

My adult daughter and I recently spent two nights on a trip to the cloud forest. This lodge was a wonderful experience in every regard. The owner exuded his love of the area, his knowledge and utilization of all possible ecological practices and his appreciation of this important area. The grounds were gorgeous, the hiking trails led to beautiful vistas and the rooms were spotless and practical. We were fortunate to be there for wood fired pizza, which was outstanding with fresh herbs from the garden and greenhouse. Thank you.

This hotel boasts a big garden in the front and its own big hiking trail in the back with 360 degree view of the whole valley as well as waterfalls and has its own hammock garden that you can relax on. They grow a lot of their own veggies in the garden as well as green house and use it in restaurant kitchen that's attached to the property. They raise their own chicken and use cage free eggs for breakfast and grown and dry their own coffee beans also. Restaurant has delicious included breakfast and makes woodfired pizza. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Walking distance to a couple of other restaurants, and you can get a taxi ride for $4 to a very small town of Santa Elena to have access to more restaurants and supermarket. The upstairs room balcony overlooks the valley and watching the sunset from the balcony is very relaxing. You see some wildlife on the trail behind the property. Monteverde -Santa Elena is an extremely small town and does not have big chain hotels anyway, This one is beautiful if you love to stay on a farm style property.

Setting/Location: Set on a mountaintop with clear views to the gulf, this property is a little slice of heaven. It is in a reserve so you see wildlife (coati) race across the lawn once in a while. It is only a few miles from the cloud forests in the area and the butterfly sanctuary is right next to it. It is a bit of a walk to the downtown area for food/people watching (took me about 20 minutes) but it felt safe. You do share a parking lot with the public who visits the reserve so do not leave valuables in your car. You are allowed to hike the reserve in the daylight hours. Only took me about an hour to hike most of their trails and I saw more wildlife there than anywhere else on my trip.

Room: The room I was in was simple. It was more like a cabin in the woods than a hotel room. But with the cool mountain air coming through the open windows it was quite relaxing. And it was very clean. The only complaint I had was that you can very clearly hear the people in the next room. Luckily I travel with ear plugs since the guy next to me was a snorer. There are no safes in the room

Amenities: There is a full service restaurant on the property that serves alcohol. I did not eat there but they allowed me to sit on the upper level with a beer i bought off property and enjoy the view. The others there were laid back. One group brought out a guitar and began singing. With the setting, it felt like a camping trip minus the campfire and smores.

Overall impression: If you do not want to be directly downtown and exposed to all the noise from traffic and tourists, this is a great place. A relaxing setting away from the hustle and bustle but still in walking distance from town if you want to go there. The price was excellent for what you got. I would recommend this place to anyone. Just bring ear plugs!
