Carmel provides a unique boutique experience at her charming B & B. Definitely worth visiting and superbly complemented by a delightful dinner at the Laughing Likkewaan. Thanks Carmel, Greg and Alistair for an unforgettable experience.

Could only leave JHB at 3pm so decided to get the journey half done! Googled on the way and found Carmel at Trading Places! What a treat ! We were greeted with big smiles and wagging pooches. She kindly arranged a great dinner "next door" with Nick and his team..AWSOME FOOD..great company, a glass of red fermented grape and some...

Carmel is a great host, making sure your stay in Smithfield is one you will definitely remember. Every need is calmly catered for and meals arranged at interesting places where you will meet equally interesting people. Would not hesitate to recommend Trading Places and look forward to my next visit.

Don't miss it. Perfect for both an overnight while road-tripping as well as for long stays. Carmel is the perfect host and Smithfield is just so beautiful. All arrangements were smooth and great meals were arranged down the road. I can't wait to go back!

Thank you for your generous comments - and especially for noticing the beds. We go to a load of trouble to make sure they really are comfortable! There will be one waiting for you here when you are next in Smithfield ....

We stopped here overnight on our way to the Cape. Carmel was away at the time, but she called to make sure that we'd arrived safely and were well looked after. The accommodation is charming and homely and has everything you need for an enjoyable stay. I can highly recommend it.

We started our holiday in Smithfield, and what an outstanding choice it turned out to be! We were able to completely de-compress from our busy lives and loved the quiet little town - you can walk from one end of town to the other in a matter of minutes! Carmel and Gus were fabulous hosts and really spoilt us. Gus...

What a great BnB filled with character. Gus was friendly and made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. The room was comfortable and had plenty of space too. The BnB was conveniently located near to the laughing lekkwaan which is well worth visiting. We highly recommend as stop over.

Carmel and Gus made us feel so at home that any negative preconceived ideas of a stopover stay in a tiny Free State town I'd never heard of were immediately dispelled (I'd had high expectations of visits to quaint-sounding Platteland 'dorpies' before and had often been disappointed). My room was spotless and beautifully decorated, and the bed was extraordinarily comfortable....

We enjoyed a wonderful stay in Smithfield, this time in Carmel and Gus's self-catering house, in a tranquil side street of Smithfield. After a peaceful stroll around the village, we ended up with an amazing dinner at the Laughing Likkewann, with hosts Gus and Alistair. With awesome music, delicious food and a browse in their incredible book store, what a...

I always stop at Trading Places if I'm making a cross country road trip, and I am never disappointed. The most recent stay was for just one night, but the welcome tea on the verandah set the tone for my stopover. The room is comfortable and quirky, everything works, and Carmel always seems to anticipate my needs. Thoughtful and unintrusive,...
