In comparison to the outrageous pricing on everything else in National Park, the YHA was very reasonable for the 4 of us to share a 4person dorm room with on suite bathroom. The rooms aren't super spacious, and are quite bare, but do the job well. Beds were comfortable, bedding provided was warm and clean. The kitchen is nice and... More

Little has changed in 8 years when first visited. A general air of shabbiness reigns, it needs a makeover. Clearly little has been spent on the upkeep. It is, however quite friendly and the location is ideal for access to Tongariro National Park

Had a great time few years ago it was a good place to chill after a long day riding and if you still have the energy go for a climb ;) We ha d our own van so we drove up to the mountain ourselves, just be careful if it snows really hard as you will need your own snow... More

Stayed just the one night. We booked a double ensuite room. It was suitable for what we needed. The amenities were well stocked and there was plenty of room for us to cook and dine. Was a lot of travellers of all ages there. Staff were informative and helpful. The price was reasonable. Would stay here again when we pass... More

When I first arrived there was a slight problem with my room but I asked to change rooms and was updated to a room with less beds and ensuite! Also one of the bunks had a double at the bottom and as I was first in the room I was able to nab the double. Yesss starfish! (Small luxuries!) So... More

Unfortunately this was not a good experience for us and I would only recommend staying here if you can't get another budget option and are desperate. Firstly the service was atrocious from what seemed like the older lady in charge. She was beyond unfriendly and rude, the worst we have encountered in any accommodation in New Zealand. Whilst waiting at... More

We stayed one night at the YHA. We had a double bedroom, which was cosy and nice but when we have been directed to our bedroom, the receptionist told us that we would have a private bathroom but at the end, we got nothing and even worse, we were the only room that had to go outside to go to... Great and Convenient! They have a rock wall, and are conveniently located next to a convenience/grocery store and a bar:). Plus, beautiful views of Mt. Ngarhoe and surrounding mountains. This is a great place to travel on your own or with friends, it feels very comfortable just walking around and chatting with people in the communal kitchen.

Well I came to this place in hopes of hiking the Tongariro Crossing, but it got scuttled thanks to lousy weather. This place was a pretty good spot to be stuck in, though. The rooms were large, clean and comfy - even though I was in a room with 8 other beds, it didn't feel crowded at all. The one... More
