Detailed Reviews

My wife & I embarked on an arduous Sikkim escapade in search of the bucolic aspects of the country life where estuaries, rivers and mountains set the stage for a vaudeville like travel in the state also known as the garden of the god of war (Indra). If you are a nature aficionado whose idiosyncrasies entail travelling along untrodden paths where silence & nature speaks volumes then the Turuk Kothi Heritage Homestay in Sikkim is the place to be. Run by Mr. Vikash Pradhan along with his spritely parents the Homestay boasts the most gargantuan rooms we’ve seen during the trip. The location is picturesque, ensconced in a valley away from the town, one can find themselves lost in a paradise of green. Vikash’s parents who stepped in when he was out of town are such charming folks that Shara & I felt at home in an instant. They did everything possible to ensure that our stay was as seamless as it could have been. The food is moreish and needless to say it’s the best we’ve had in Sikkim. If you are looking for a quick getaway and don’t want to be drowned by the obstreperous crowds that plague the cities then this is the place for you.

This delightful property is a hidden gem, away from the hustle and bustle of India and even away from the busyness of the small towns of Sikkim. If you want somewhere to relax while being well looked after, this is the place. We were given a warm and friendly welcome - followed soon afterwards by a most delicious and substantial meal - while being provided with spacious, comfortable and spotless accommodation in peaceful and beautiful surroundings. We had only two nights here and wished it could have been longer. Turuk Kothi Heritage Home is a place of tranquility yet within easy reach of many places of interest in Sikkim. If you're looking for somewhere special to stay in Sikkim, you should certainly consider this place.

The long winding roads from Bagdogra to Turuk valley ended in a picture perfect heritage home nestled amidst forests and hills providing the traveller with a view of mountains , the chirping noises of insects, birds and bees in an envelope of trees, plants and flowers.
Straight out of a fairy tale, the lawns are well manicured and so is the garden which is a delight to watch while sipping on a hot cup of Sikkim's tea or Nescafe Gold coffee from the verandah of your cottage. The beauty of this heritage home is further augmented by the crispness of the air of the mountains and Tsange ( a cross between a Tibetan Mastiff and a Labrador) basking in the garden.
The rooms are excellent with Magazines to read, complimentary tea and coffee, soft beds, clean white sheets and towels, a bathroom sparkling clean and two types of shower with curtains, a hair dryer and loofah.
To mention about food is another paragraph. The cook Ratan da is a cook par excellence. Since our arrival we had some home made pakodas and kingfisher beer Ultra. He made some excellent chem, chicken Kofta and chilli pork Curry. Apart from the usual dal, parathas , vegetables, salad , rice and roti ( par excellence) he made caramalized bananas with whipped cream and custard, caramel pudding and tree tomatoes with cream. He also cooked Thupka, Curry ( a dish from Sikkim) and momos. The dining area and the layout of the cutlery was excellent
We are indeed grateful to Mr Vikas Pradhan and his family for the excellent stay abd hospitality at their heritage property.

Nestled in the ancient forests of Turuk is the Heritage Kothi. The main building stands amidst a sprawling courtyard fragrant with magnolias and plumerias.
The individual cottages are towards the periphery, surrounded by thickets of bamboo, lily bushes and curated orchards.
The dining hall is hosted in an extension of the main cottage that reeks of ancient heritage and Nepalese culture.
Soak in the silence, orchestra of the cicadas and rustle of the leaves entwined in an all pervading silence.
The rooms are spacious, the verandah to die for, the furniture in tune with the age of the establishment. Albeit, some more light could have been added to the rooms, overall, its impressive in its décor and grandeur.
The bathroom though big, the shower area is miniscule. Power back up only for 2 lights in the 2 rooms, so a power cut would mean sweltering in the heat, depending on the time of your visit.
House keeping is done when asked for, but do not expect much. Check the coffee mugs before use, lest those are already used with dried dreg marks of previously brewed coffee!
With no room service per-se, any requirement needs to be communicated to one of their attendants (hopefully he picks up your call), and you are left at his mercy on it being fulfilled.
Dinner/lunch is served in the dining area which is quite a walk and nice too unless it rains. The lighting across the property is inadequate and its eerie after dark when the line of garden lights barely illuminate their pedestals.
Lurking shadows all around and the disquiet of the quiet is quite nerve wracking for many, while enjoyed by others. Not for the weak hearted!
Food is one department that lacks abysmally. The breakfast is the only meal that is actually palatable, although they have severe reluctance to serve what you choose. We literally had to invoke the gods of aviary to get it for breakfast.
The lunch and dinner are absolutely appalling; rice – sticky and undercooked, dal – tasteless, a ridiculously bland and odorous radish curry, desserts that are crying for the correct recipe ……
Also, there is no one around while you eat, so in case you need something, you need to rely on the decibel your voice can produce to be heard across the thick walls, cross the gap to the main building and reach the majestic ears of the cook inside.
2 small soap bars and a natural scrubber are all that is provided as toiletries; not even dental kit because it is a ‘homestay’ as they say, albeit an exorbitant one, thus falls terribly short of expectations.

Response from vikash pradhan, Owner at Turuk Kothi Heritage Home
Responded 24 Jun 2024
While we sincerely thank you for taking valuable time to pen down your feedback regarding your stay with us, we did reflect on our shortcomings, but at the same time, would like to humbly differ from everything that you have put here. For a modest yet honest-family-run establishment like ours, it is only imperative that we take our stance while also reflecting on our shortcomings as mentioned above. A concept of a home stay bears resemblance to that of a home, but only truly away from home. A home-cooked meal prepared from the seasonal organic produce from our kitchen garden or locally sourced from our village, minimal interference unless asked for by the guests, and overall experience in itself is what a home stay promises to offer. Likewise, there are certain boundaries and rules when it comes to a home stay. A concept of a home stay does not run parallel to the lines to that of a hotel. Hence, whatever we provide, even the toiletries are minimal but complete in itself. The ‘two tiny soaps’ are made locally, produced sustainably, and organically. The loofah is again homegrown, washed, and disinfected and packed by us. The idea is to provide the best, however little. Sir, lest we forget, we did adhere to your needs as well. We modified our meal timings as requested by you especially dinner timings from 8:30pm to 10:00pm, and adjusting to your preferences regardless of my staff reaching their respective home after 11:30pm, we even modified our fixed meal system during breakfast, just so your needs are met and not to forget the discount on the accommodation. All our meals though fixed, it is meticulously thought and prepared with the aim of providing our guests with not just taste but also an experience and an insight into a different culture. The dish that you are talking about here is a national staple in Bhutan know as ‘datchi’, which we included in our menu, keeping in mind the dishes that are generally consumed and is quite popular in Sikkim as well. However, we will keep in mind, not everyone is welcoming to a new palate neither a new cultural experience, and would only want familiar recipes. Sir, few of my family members, including myself, did enquire if everything was fine and everytime your reply was positive.Furthermore, I personally apologised about the coffee stain in the cup that was left behind which should have never happened in the first place. Regarding the weather here it can be warm, but never sweltering unlike the plains due to its geographical location. Hence, a humble fan would suffice, otherwise that too is pretty obsolete in a place like ours for most of the months in a year. While we experience power cuts and drop in the voltage as per our location, we have ample inverter backup so that our guests are not left in a dark room when the night sets in. We at Turuk Kothi, sincerely value our guests, and it is always our constant endeavour to cater to any specific needs of our guests within our capacity, location and sometimes even beyond. Sir, we have been running this precious heritage homestay for more than two decades now, and we pride ourselves in the food that we prepare and feed our guests with, and the joy we receive from seeing our guests happy. Again, we sincerely apologise for the minor inconveniences that you might have faced during your stay here. However, if you would have communicated better, we would have been able to serve better.

Me and my family had a great time at Turuk. The host was really attentative to our needs while letting us enjoy the perfectly tranquility of the place. Nice cottages and really good and well-prepared food! The best place we stayed at during our time in Sikkim!

This is a GORGEOUS place and wonderful food. A gem! This is a place to unwind in, to gather your thoughts, to watch the birds and flowers. It's very well maintained and the hosts are extremely hospitable. I love that it is a family run homestay. I'll be back soon.

We spent 3 nights at Turuk Kothi. It is very close by to Bagdogra Airport (3 hrs drive) and you can spend relaxed holidays without the hassle of long travels by road. We were group of 5 family members and we had taken to cottages. We were lucky that, we were the only guests during that time. The rooms are spacious, and very well designed with large sit out. The property is surrounded by mountains and greenery all around. There is lots of open space between the cottages and the main bungalow. One can chill in this open space with a book! Our host Vikas was very friendly. He helped us trekking to a nearby mountain. The staff was very friendly and taking care of all our needs. Ratan is a great chef. The food selection was local simple food yet quite eclectic. Ratan stole every ones heart with his simple and tasteful food.
An excellent place for vacation with idea of doing nothing!

Spent 3 nights at this beautiful heritage property. Nothing spectacular
about the accommodation, but the simplicity and the sense of space is so tranquil.
Carefully manicured garden, plenty of flowers all around. We, two couples were allocated a 2-bedroom cottage. With all basic amenities, including hot water and room heater. Furniture is functional and basic. Meals were served in the dining room, which is part to the main bungalow. We looked forward to the meals, each of them, because the cook worked up such simple yet so tasty dishes. Some with local tastes, some Nepalese, but all were just lip-smacking delicious. This is a place where one cannot seek to do much. Just relax, read up on all those books you didn't. And enjoy lovely home-cooked meals.

Our stay at Turuk Kothi was wonderful. The rooms were very spacious and comfortable. The lawn on the property was big and beautiful. The food was very tasty. We especially liked the Sikkimese tree tomato dessert with a little fresh cream on it. We were very happy here and thank you for making us feel at home!
