Bhainsrorgarh Fort is one of the finest Boutique Forts Hotels in south eastern Rajasthan and stands overlooking an expanse of the Chambal River. It is one of the most picturesque and awe-inspiring forts of Rajasthan. This fortified outpost of the erstwhile kingdom of Mewar (Udaipur) sits majestically on a rocky cliff that rises from the bank of the Chambal River. Located 235 km northeast of Udaipur and 50 km south of Kota, the fort was built in 1741 AD. The fortress has been restored to its old world charm by the present family that continues to live in the same precincts. The Fort wall encompasses a thriving village, possibly one of the few in the country to be contained within the fort. The gently restored Palace within Bhainsrorgarh Fort can be accessed over a bridge built on the Chambal or by a boat transfer that takes you to the edge of the fort where the cenotaphs of the family are located. Besides there is the endless charm of exploring on your own in the well-tended gardens, village, farms, cenotaphs and surrounding ruins.Guest can keep themselves busy with various activities like: Boat Ride in the Chambal River, Visit to the 9th Century Badoli Temples, Drive to the tribal villages by Jeep in the evening; catching the magic of dusk as we stop for tea or a sundowner at a scenic spot on the banks of the chambal river. You can also enjoy a picnic on an island or a drive to the Mukundarrah National Park which is great for birding. The walk to the village market is also very popular with our guests. You can also try your luck at angling in the river below where you can hook the famous Mahseer Fish.

This incredible place was recommended by our travel agent as the perfect spot to unwind during our trip around Rajasthan. The journey from Chittorgarh was long and dusty due to the delay in resurfacing the road, but this will improve when the work is completed. After negotiating the narrow, winding lanes avoiding livestock and motorbikes our driver brought us to this tranquil paradise, an ancient fort built in the C18 and still in the hands of the same family who now run it as this delightful boutique hotel.
Our beautiful spacious room overlooked the wide Chambol river and gardens. The beds were the most comfortable we had slept in during our trip and the bathroom facilities all worked well.
Delicious meals are served on the turreted rooftop with views over the river and surrounding countryside.
Our host suggested a trip on the river where we spotted kingfishers, herons, vultures and crocodile. The temple at Badoli is also well worth the excursion, along with a jeep ride through the villages to a rural backwater.
For rail travellers Kota Junction is less than two hours away, transfers can be arranged by the hotel from either the airport or station.
A stay here is an opportunity not to be missed.

This magnificent old fort dating from the 1700s has been undergoing restoration by the owner and brother since 2006. Both are absolute gentlemen and happy to tell you all their plans for the future of the business. The fort’s location is just breathtaking. Set at the top of sheer cliffs, there are commanding views across the junction of two large rivers to the neat pomegranate and guava orchards beyond. The room offered to us was the size of a good-sized city apartment: bedroom with high domed ceiling and two river view balconies, large vestibule with windows to the outside courtyard; an enormous bathroom with local red stone floors and huge walk in shower. The entire building is steeped in history wherever you look. A roof terrace is the perfect place to watch sunrise at breakfast or sunset with a drink. Food is of a very high standard indeed. The staff are very professional and efficient making for an effortless stay. Recommended activities include the boat trip to view the fort from the water and to spot wildlife such as kingfisher, crocodile and vulture. For us the undoubted highlight was the guided walk to a nearby village, via the narrow suspension bridge. It was a pleasure to meet local people who were friendly and curious though admittedly they probably don’t encounter too many Scots walking around in kilts. The jeep ride is worth it simply for the up close and personal contact in nearby villages where children run out to wave and shout. The property is well off the beaten track so getting there is an adventure in itself. The fort is best reached with someone else doing the driving and navigating.

We left with wonderful memories and promised to return!

PS some guide books e.g. Insight say only that the fort is ‘not open to the public’. This might be true as a visitor attraction but don’t be put off staying there, in fact even more reason to do so!

Great Host… and a lovely amazing site, Being a travel professional I had been visited so many beautiful places around India but the location of this fort is remarkable.
It was already decided to have lunch at this beautiful place with a stunning view of the Chambal River.
The host family has the beautiful sense to trained their working team appointed locally to give employment for local boys of this village. Very sensible staff and well trained, they take care of your every small need.
We went for an evening walk and the most beautiful activity was at the next morning organized by the Royal Family of this place was to have Boat Ride in the river Chambal.
We were amazed by the team once they prepared our morning coffee in the boat and having some biscuits…beautiful…superb, everything was so peaceful…
I have seen so many birds, Crocodiles along our one hour trip in the boat. The crew was equipped with binocular and some handy things as well.
Food was amazing and hygienic, well-cooked, we had our Lunch and Dinner both here only.
I had chance to meet both the brothers and had good chatting. They are great knowledgeable people and enthusiasm about wildlife and India Tourism.

It is not a random touristy place, come for peace and enjoy nature, you will not regret it.
Best Wishes!!!

Totally in love with this unique property in Rajasthan . Though it came highly recommended from a friend , the condition of the last 15km of the road made us wonder many times if it was the right decision to travel all the way from Jaipur for it ... But ! Believe me once u get the first glimpse of the large fort standing majestically on a cliff high above the Chambal river , ur doubts cease .. and then u enter the property after a short drive through a village and see the views from the river facing rooms and the terrace and the gardens ur grateful and happy that u made the decision to visit this fort . We stayed for two nights In a beautiful river view suite full of old world artefacts and charm but still having all the modern luxuries .. ate flavourful home style Rajasthani cuisine... spotted some crocodiles while on a boat trip on the river and just relaxed and chilled out ..I highly recommend visiting the fort if u r looking for a relaxing peaceful rejuvenating break ..

We had the most lovely suite - slightly larger than our home, and furnished with period furniture. Comforatable bed and large bathroom with good shower.
Fantastic position and meals were taken ( when it was not too windy) in a delightful turret or on the roof with lovely views over the Chambral river.
The food was some of the best we have ever had, and all nicely served. The staff, though they did not speak much English were very helpful and attentive.
My only (slight) complaint was that there were few places to sit outside in comfort. The roof was very hot with no shade, and the benches and chairs in the garden also had no shade and were not very comfortable. Nice verandahs though.
We took a pleasant early morning river trip and also a walk over the little suspension bridge which leads to an easy path through fields wher you can see what goes on in rural Rajhastan.
The owner ( who is a bit of a foodie judging by an article in a magazine I saw), speaks excellent English and was very welcoming and helpful.

It was a long and bumpy ride to this hotel but was well worth it. When we arrived we were blown away by the setting, the rooms, the welcome and the visual impact. The rooftop restaurant was equally impressive but we misunderstood the pricing of lunch and dinner. As a consequence we had both. They were the most expensive meals we had in India and far from being the most varied or tasty. On balance we’d still have had one or the other, but not both. I went on the boat trip which was ok but no more than a boat trip. We had been spoilt by other trips on the Chambal river but this was literally an hours row up the river where you are quite likely to know more about the wildlife than the staff who were with you. Whenever I asked a question I was passed the bird book. Glad we went and loved the stay but it fell a bit short of excellent.

Four of us had such a wonderful time here. Our hosts were kind and informative, the staff were attentive in a non intrusive and friendly way and the accommodating and setting were exquisite. The food was also delicious.

If only we could have changed our travel plans and stayed longer. We would certainly love to return. Strongly recommended for anyone wanting somewhere special to stay.

I hope to return here someday. I really liked exploring the grounds and crossing a tributary of the mighty river on the swinging cable bridge. We stayed in a large room in the old castle and ate a nice meal prepared by the gracious old noble family.

A magnificent, peaceful, lovingly restored castle perched over the Chambal River. This was our favorite experience in India so far and one of our favorite travel experiences ever -- not just the fort itself, but the rooftop dining, the gardens, and the river ride on the Chambal river. The owner, Hemendra, is urbane and gracious and the staff are friendly and attentive. The food is, in a word, remarkable (Hemendra is also a chef). The family who built the castle in the 1700's still occupy the property and every inch shows their good taste while maintaining the rustic splendor of the property.

After several days in the hustle and bustle of urban India this is just what we needed. I wish we could have stayed longer.

If you enjoy Indian history combined with authenticity then Bhainsrorgarh is the palace for you. The family are in residence & take great care of their guests, the rooms are comfortable but not flash. Quietly rowing down the Chambal river searching for crocodiles & kingfishers or gently speed boating upriver to Titanic Island & a waterside picnic watching otters at play are an essential ingredient of this fascinating part of Rajahstan. Take a walk over the village’s wobbly bridge, past farmer’s harvesting their mustard crop and young children running out to practise their ‘hello mister’.
