Concerns
The house keeping to be improved. On second day they have not cleaned the room and replaced fresh bath towels.
The room is not having kettle for preparing cofee/tea .One has to wait till the opening of Restaurants.
The tariff should be inclusive of breakfast and dinner (for the tariff they are charging).
Now coming to the humiliation - There were several foreigners who were staying at the same time as us. The manager just ignored the Indians there (the ones who he thought were not paying top dollar) and just shamelessly catered to only the foreigners. He came by for every meal to check on only the tables where the foreigners sat and blatantly ignored us. We ignored this initially, but this became a common thing at every meal. He was rude when we enquired about something regarding the menu. He was rude when my son was just checking out one of the antique pressing machines they had out in the dining hall (it had ceased working several years back and was just a heap of iron. In any case my son was just gentle with it). He shamelessly announced the day's events (a dance program for the evening) to the foreigners sitting there and just passed us without even bothering to let us know about it as well. Just for courtesy, he could have come by and told us about it as well. He did not bother to announce to us that there were two different breakfast options - One the default Indian menu and the other a continental breakfast. My kids would have enjoyed the continental breakfast more than the Indian one. When we came to know about it and asked him why he didnt let us know, he very rudely refused to even acknowledge that it was an error on his side and haughtily replied what the problem was..he would bring us anything that we needed. As if we had to approach him for our meal and he would 'deign' to bring it to us. That really upset me and I told him if he could not see that there was a problem, he was not fit to run the place. For which he smiled as if he knew that it was the foreigners who would anyway bring him the dough.
My advice to the Indians who want to visit this place: Go if you want to lower your self esteem and see what it feels like to be treated shabbily.
My advice to the foreigners who want to visit this place: Go if you want to be part of a setup that promotes discrimination and you end up being a party to such prejudices, albeit without your knowledge.
What’s good?
1. The huge lush campus that has a lot of greens and unique architecture, statues and experiences.
2. The campus has so much of history some of which are organic and some that have been acquired for a memorable session down the history lane.
3. Gives an authentic village stay experience with very real mosquitoes! Get a mosquito repellent.
What needs attention? Like very much!
1. First of all, customer service. This is very obvious when you go for lunch, dinner or call in for room service. It takes ages that you end up cutting it short or go and do it yourself. One such experience was when we had to go get the towels ourselves as it took forever.
2. Wi-Fi. Now this is a basic necessity when it has been promised as part of the room. We stayed in heritage deluxe rooms in close quarters of each other and there was no Wi-Fi absolutely and this NEVER got fixed in the two days of our stay. While the obvious reason was the range was not covered and they need a extender, the management never seemed to fix it.
3. Room hygiene. Be it dusting of chairs, paintings or the mini fridge needs some serious attention. The heater and AC was hit and miss with these working on some days and not working on others.
Bottomline: Go once to have an unique experience that you don’t get anywhere but be prepared for no Internet and poor customer experience.
1. Horrible Checkin experience : We reached the property at 5 pm well past the checkin time. So one would expect the rooms to be READY. Not a single room was. They also took us to a room where the existing guest has not checkout. We eventually got rooms at 6:30. Imagine having driven down from Bangalore with senior citizens and kids and to have to wait for 1 and half hour for getting rooms. It doesn’t end here. Remember the guest who had not checked out ? She returned and walked into the room to be aghast to see her luggage was just kept and out someone else was in the room. What a shame! I felt terrible for this lady. I am so sorry that this happened to you and if we played a role in this somehow.
2. Housekeeping : You call the housekeeping for anything and then you just keep following up - pillows, luggage. We got the room by 6;30 and luggage only arrived by 7 ! I have never seen this happening.
3. Drivers dormitory: Management has decided that drivers don’t need a decent sleeping place. The expectation is for them to sleep on concrete. I offered paying extra for mattress and they couldn’t even do that.
4. Food: We had breakfast and dinner twice here. The first evening they were serving pulao and dal fry. Bland and boring. But forget that you are in Kumbakonam. Are you ashamed of serving Sambar, Rasam, Pulliogare and many other amazing dishes from the region ? The breakfast fared marginally better but here again, nothing is ready on time . We had lunch at Mantra Koodam and Svatma during the same trip and were thrilled how they showcased the Tamil cuisine.
5. Gala evening : Be true to your identity! Is your hotel really a place where you play loud crappy music through some random DJ ? Is this the image you desire ?
6. Swimming pool : It’s more like a tank but that’s not a problem . It’s quite quaint and cozy. But you allow everyone to get into with whatever they wear. Is this hygienic ??
7. Checkout : how could anything have gone right during this stay ?? They billed us wrong !!
This has been one of my worst stays considering the amount we paid. Meta point
- they can’t handle the number of guest they take in.
- the staff is not rude but they are just incompetent or superficial.
This place has so much potential but it’s just run so poorly, I cannot believe this has a rating of 4.5! This place is projected as a museum and perhaps it’s one but I think their service should also be looked up in a museum.
Overall hotel stay and experience was very nice. The museum collection in the hotel is simply amazing. Gala dinner DJ arrangements were nice. Gala dinner food taste was not up to the mark and it was closed by 11.30 pm during the DJ was on.
Only negative point is that the food taste and options needs to improve.
Overall very nice experience.
Couple of challenges, the room cleaning folks did not clean the room the entire day, even though we had dropped the keys at reception for cleaning. The cleaning of the room happened after 6pm. Basic things like towels were missing on both the days of stay, we had to request for it explicitly. Even then hand towels were missing. The bathroom walls were very dusty and not clean. Room cleaning staff was very much understaffed. We also heard similar complaint from other guests.
Bathroom had plumbing issues like no water in hot water line in one of the bathroom, flush issues, draining issues. We had asked them to fix the no water issue in hot water line, but that did not get fixed.
Restaurant food was good, but service was poor. The buffet area tables were not serviced properly. The tables were not cleaned on time. In the open seating there weren't sufficient fans. A lot of the tables were blocked for big groups and so it was difficult to find tables.
Overall, a nice Heritage hotel that is very traditional, but seems to be missing out on service.
the history. Well to say best I was not disappointed. You cannot classify this place into a standard resort, it is actually a heritage resort and place started with a social cause . It is a place where you can feel and experience Kumbakonam Tamil culture. The many cottages are the original old homes which are refurbished without losing its original grandeur. Great care has been take not to destroy any of the originalities of these buildings. Lush green campus with lots of flower and fruit trees. A remodelled swimming pool looks very similar to a temple pond.
Food is really good, with authentic south Indian food and flavour. The staff are very friendly they treat you as if you are a member of the family. All are dressed in the traditional white shirt and white veshti (dhoti), woman in saree hence you don't have that regular resort feeling.
Top of all these, the resort is a historical treasure. Around the campus you can find lot of history, you need to take time to go around and learn each of the displayed items. Lot of Chola era artefacts are on display. There is a guided tour of the museum done by Mr. Steve Borgia, don't miss this tour . The Mint Mahal (Palace), which itself is a historical piece, this building has a very interesting history. Lot of item with great historical value. The icing is the cake is the original painting by Raja Ravi Varma . There were two historical evidence given I found as incorrect is the history of Bartholomaus Ziengenbalg and Constanzo Beschi(Veeramamuniar) .
Appreciate and thank Mr. Steve Borgia for his socio-cultural work through this resort , which is massive. Also Brindha office in charge, all the staff of the resort
Ours was a family trip with people travelling across all age groups from very small kids to senior adults.. the whole place was best suited for everyone with in house wheel chairs, slopes, stairs and lifts to get across all places.
It is beautifully located at a prominent place with important places of visit at an hours travel and swamimalai temple in its neighbourhood.
Sucha vast area with antique pieces and art work all around, the rooms are so huge, well equipped catering to all our basic needs and the nature just envelopes you with its calmness.
A definite mention is to the in house museum and pump set which the kids will be fascinated.
The food was like our house meals which did no harm health-wise.
What I loved about the stay in this place was their hospitality as they ask you everytime about our comfort and are ready to acknowledge our concerns.
A must visit place that doesn't bite your pockets!
