We spent 3 nights at the monastery, we were really pleased with the whole accomodation. The room is simple but offers very comfortable beds, private bathroom, equipped with mosquito nets. The nuns treated us with abundant meals, tasty and different every day. They were very friendly and supportive for any request. Nice living room with fire place available for all guests, with good wifi. Strategic position: very close to Ngorogoro entrance gate, and 1 hour away from Tarangire.
I found St. Catherine's Monastery when searching for a place for three colleagues and myself to stay in Karatu. The Monastery is relaxed and peaceful, the local environment is beautiful. There is a helpful and friendly team of staff who work within the guesthouse area, the nuns are also involved, equally friendly, and inquisitive. As you would expect the guesthouse is spotlessly clean. The food was excellent. On arrival tea and coffee was available, with homemade biscuits. Dinner consisted of a variety dishes served in a buffet style - tasty and fresh. Herman, the chef, was rightfully proud of his food, it was excellent. For the thirsty guest, alcoholic drinks are available for purchase. Breakfast again was a variety of dishes with fresh omelettes cooked to order. I had a lovely time staying at the guesthouse and would highly recommend it to others. The guesthouse staff and nuns provide a wonderful service. For those booking directly, a single room is 65 USD full board, there is flexibility to pay in cash or directly into their bank account. If you can get in contact with the guesthouse manager Japhet through WhatsApp this is the easiest, and quickest, way of booking the rooms.…
I wished we had gotten their information as we want to return !!! We just loved it so so much If anyone has their phone or email which is better please let me know ... Loved it - lovely food from their garden - the sisters are so happy
The welcome you receive in the monastery is second to none and they do all they can to make you feel at home. The guesthouse is situated just outside the Ngorongoro Crater and provides an excellent, lower cost option in contrast to the eye-watering prices inside the crater. It also of offers a welcome alternative to the many foreign-owned hotels and lodges, and give visitors an opportunity to directly support a local community. The guesthouse has over twenty rooms and is extremely clean and comfortable. Rooms are simple, clean and en-suite. This is a sustainable community where almost everything you eat has been produced on the monastery farm, including honey and coffee which you can buy to take home. The money generated from the guesthouse goes to support local people. Currently, the monastery is funding the schooling for a number of orphans and providing cooked food for the nursery children at the nearby school. Members of the community will take guests on tours of the local area, including the farm, primary school and coffee plantation. Whilst this is a monastery, there is absolutely no obligation to attend services unless you wish to. I would recommend this guesthouse to anyone looking for an insight into local life, and a reasonably priced place to stay within a very short distance of some of the best national parks on the continent.…
We stayed at St Catherines for two nights. We were three adults and three kids 7, 4 and 3. St Catherines is located outside of Karatu and just 5 minutes from the Ngorongroro park gate. Its location is quiet and peaceful. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the food was excellent. We appreciated the way they accommodated our family. This is an excellent choice for a budget conscious family.
The hotel is very quiet and peaceful. It is inside a monastery, so it is nuns running the hotel. They were very nice and friendly. All meals were included in the price. It is located near the gate to Ngorongoro national park. All in all a good experience :)
The nuns helped us arrange safari trips to Oldopai Gorge and Ngorogoro Crater with knowledgeable, local guides. Guides Frances, Musa and Boniface provided us with insights on the history of Oldopai excavations, the animal world, and indigenous peoples along with the history of Tanzania. Our room was clean and comfortable, and Mary cooked us delicious meals, as well as hosting us on a number of short local tours to see the working farm, a coffee plantation and the nearby schools, partially supported by the nuns. A warm welcome and ready smiles were abundant; we enjoyed our stay and safari!
This is an actual monastery with nuns only 10 minutes from the entrance gate of Ngoro Goro. The rooms are nice and clean, the food is excellent (mostly from their own farm). The nuns are very friendly and we were very happy there.
We were a large family group staying to go to the Crater on safari. The nuns were so freindly and welcoming after a long bumpy journey it was superb/ and after a long day out the next day. The food was fantastic and plentiful all served in a calm atmosphere. The kids were made to feel at home straight away as well. Could have stayed much longer in this oasis.
The accommodations were very comfortable, the food was abundant and delicious and the sisters were extremely hospitable. My family took 2 rooms, each with 2 beds and private bathroom with hot shower. Clean linens were provided. Each morning breakfast was waiting for us at our table in the guest dining room, which included and egg, toast, banana, and tea/coffee. The lunch boxes that we each had to take on our safari trips was enough to feed a lion...pardon the pun. Dinner was always a delicious assortment of local cuisine. We all were able to rest comfortably each night for the 3 nights we stayed, and the Sister's singing their prayers each morning was breathtaking. This was the best accommodations we had during our 2 week stay in Tanzania.
