Located near the Thattekad Bird sanctuary, Soma Birds Lagoon is an exquisite combination of nature and luxury. A nest that cuddles you in the lap of Mother Nature. Being quite close to the sanctuary, guests at Soma Birds Lagoon have the privilege of watching more than 300 odd species of birds that is found in this vicinity. The Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary commonly known as The Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is also home to mammals like leopard, sloth bear, deer, elephant and porcupine besides a phenomenally diverse bird and butterfly population. Special care has been taken while building Soma Birds Lagoon, to preserve the village ambiance and ecological balance of this haven. So while providing all modern amenities, our cottages do not lose their rustic air. Soma Bird's lagoon is also an ideal place to experience Ayurveda and rejuvenate your body mind and soul.

Although the place gives the impression of being a little tired and past its best it is set in a wonderful location assuming you have your own transport to get too and from the place. Excellent location for Bird watching trips in the nearby forests. The rooms are reasonable large and well set out and the dining area overlooks the Lagoon. Great for an early evening beer before dinner. The WiFi reception was excellent which is unusual for such a remote location and well appreciated.

Really loved this place, staff were great. Food very good. Clean bungalows although abit dated. Peace and tranquillity in abundance, hired bikes and went kayaking which was great. Nothing much to do but a hill and appreciate nature and the birds. Had an excellent stay.

We stayed here for a day on our way from Kochi to Munnar. The resort is located near the Thattekad birds sanctuary. Like the other reviews say, there is not a lot to do in the resort. But it is definitely a great place to get away from all the noise of the city to relax. The food in the resort is good and the rooms are clean. We were pretty much the only family that stayed there in the second week of october. I would think that is a plus for people trying to get away from the crowds. We were there in October and I believe the bird sanctuary nearby opens in november. I think they should be getting more people then.

This was a memorable weekend. This is good drive away from civilisation, but being woken up in the morning by the sound of a thousand birds is just worth the trouble.
You can take a country-boat ride on the Periyar river early morning to catch the wildlife, and if you are lucky, spot an elephant or two.
We got a building overlooking the river and the view was just breathtaking.
The rooms were very minimalistically furnished, but comfortable.
The ayurvedic center staff were friendly and competent, and I was happy with the treatment.
As usual, I travelled with my baby and bottles, and the kitchen staff were gracious enough to let me cook my baby food in their kitchen.
I would recommend it highly to anyone who wants to just get away from the concrete jungle.

We just returned from our Kerala tour. We stayed for 2 days in the Birds Lagoon Village Resort in Thattekad. The resort is around 15 kms. from Kothamangalam. The famous Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is just 7-8 kms. away. The resort is in a secluded place. There are five cosy units with A/C and 8 non A/C units. The resort has all the modern facilities and yet gives you the feel of being in the countryside.

The reception area is built with bamboo. There is a good dining area above the reception. Food of your choice is provided with a 2 hours' advance intimation.

The staff is very helpful and would go out of the way to make your stay comfortable.

The view from the verandah of the units is fabulous, specially in the early morning when you can watch birds chirping in the vacant land just opposite the units.

A visit to the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary (Thattekad Bird Sanctuary) is a must. We visited the sanctuary in the evening and took the services of one Mr. Rajeev who was our guide. His knowledge about the birds, animals and the flora is unaimaginable. We were lucky to see many birds (apart from the usual mynah, robin, kingfisher etc.), the most notable being the Crested Serpant Eagle, White Bellied Treepie, the Drongo, Grey Jungle Fowl. We could see the Srilanka Frogmouthed, one of the rarest species of birds, from a distance of 3 feet. As the name suggests, the mouth of this bird is literally like that of a frog.

I would certainly visit Birds Lagoon Resort next time and will stay at least for 4 days. A great place to relax.

Fortunately, not many people know about this place. During the peak season of diwali, there were only 3 families in the resort.

I have really enjoyed my stay in this beautiful property...! During my stay I have met 14 bird watchers from Norway they were staying in this property second time.
The location was really excellent and this place is really a gift for " Kerala "the gods own country.

The service was excellent and very helpful staff. Congratulation to somatheeram Ayurveda group team. I was in somatheeram group property on last year in my vacation at Trivandrum and their excellent hospitality and services are well known internationally the same we can experience in this naturally gifted place too.I would recommend this property to my friends

We travelled from Munnar to Cochin and stopped for one night in Thattekkad to break the journey. We stayed at the Birds Lagoon Resort. We were able to get a discount on the room price, perhaps because we travelled out of season and it turned out we were the only guests there for the night. So I suggest you try to get an A/C room for 2500 (incl breakfast) rupees instead of the regular 3500/3000.
The resort itself was breathtaking, on the edge of a huge lagoon where birds and beautiful insects visit regularly. In the morning the blue kingfishers can be spotted from the balcony of your cottage. It's nice to have a wander around the beautiful compound and the manager is very happy to show you around and explain all the exotic trees and plants. But other than that, there's nothing there. So you're kinda stuck, unless you have a car. You can always book a taxi to do some sightseeing in the area or to take you to the bird sanctuary for a lovely morning hike.
There's a small swimming pool, which is refreshing and possibly nice for kids. The food is not the best we ate, but the staff takes care in the preparation and the view during dinner/breakfast is magnificent.
The cottage we stayed in (Kindfisher) was basic, but clean, maybe a little bit too small. The generators tend to work at half power, so be sure to mention it to the manager if your A/C is not working properly. Also we did not have any hot water. But I guess this is not much of a problem in the warm climate.
We enjoyed our stay, but one night was enough for us. If you're looking for peace and quiet, just want to go for walks, enjoy bird watching or read your book in a nice setting, this is the place to be.
