Hornbill camp is about 2 hours away from Kochi airport and is situated close to the famous "Thattekad Bird Sanctuary". It is on the banks of a reservoir of the Periyar river. On the other bank lies protected forests and the bird sanctuary. When we visited in early February the reservoir was full of water. The tent that we stayed in was clean, comfortable and air conditioned. The staff are very friendly and made our stay very pleasant. The food was wholesome & tasty served buffet style and so we did not mind that the spread was limited. We were taken birding early next morning to the forest area, accompanied by Mr. Praveen, the camp naturalist. We spend about three hours and saw about forty species. As we got out of the car, the first thing we saw was a wild elephant

Thank you very much for the extensive review of your stay and birding . Very happy to note that you had a satisfactory stay . We will definitely look into the food aspect , since we are a Camp and in a remote area we have limited supplies hence the limited choice in food . We are working towards more options and hope to have a full fledged menu available in the coming season . We would love to have you back sometime after things settle down with the Carona virus scare . Do come with other friends and family who would be interested in a holiday in the wilderness. Hoping to see you sometime soon . Cheers !

Lovely, scenic location set on a river and surrounded by picturesque countryside. Spacious, comfortable, en-suite tented accommodation with a fan. Staff friendly and helpful. Communal, tasty, buffet style meals with lots of variety for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Tea and biscuits served at 6 a.m. for those going out bird watching. No alcohol is available here. We were there for the bird watching. If we had more time there we would have tried the kayaking and cycling activities which are offered.

It was literally an amazing experience staying at hornbill Camp. We really feel like sleeping in the lap of our mother nature. I was so sure that I not even need an alarm to wake up it was full of chirping sounds of different kinds of birds. To acquaint about the food they served I never felt like having food from a hotel. They gave us an amazing dinner. With limited number of dishes they made that dinner something special for us. About the activities also they were so cooperative helping us kayak through the periyar into the spots where we can easily find different bird species and all. All together it was an amazing blend of comfort and joy. I'll always recommend this for couples as well as groups who love birding and peace of mind.

Hornbill Camp is on the outskirts of Thattekad Bird Reserve. Not a great start, they sent the wrong type of car which made the journey there a little unpleasant but other than that we had a great stay. It is very very peaceful but for a couple of days a plantation walk, kayaking, borrowing the bikes and bird watching will fill your time. The accommodation is large permanent tents on the Periyar River with views on the other side over the river and jungle beyond. The tents are basic but comfortable with attached bathrooms. The food was great and we found the guides on all our tours very good with excellent English.

Lovely location right on the riverbank and surrounded by plantations. Comfortable, clean and well appointed tented accommodation, cool and spacious, Staff welcoming and friendly and meals delicious. Lots to see locally and in the area and we enjoyed the nature trails around the camp. Offer activities such as kayaking and cycling but we didn't have time for that as we focused on birdwatching. Good birding in the local area.

The place is ok. Nothing like the pictures. We were booked for 3 nights, but soon realized there is nothing to do there for that long. Wanted to checkout earlier and asked if they can refund, of course they couldn't!!! They said it was a very busy season - but while we were there, the whole place was literally empty - only 2 guests!!!

We loved the camp and its team. The food was absolutely wonderful and stay was extremely comfortable. Our tent had a balcony overlooking the river and forest. Birdwatching and kayaking were defintely the highlights but cycling to neighbouring village and the hanging bridge would be my best pick. Highly recommend for families and groups.

Tents are luxury standard and very comfortable with full amenities including shower and flush toilet. Canoeing on the river very relaxing and hired bikes to ride to the hanging bridge. Nature trail was interesting saw drongos and giant wood spider, rubber production, coffee, cocoa, papaya, pepper and other flora. We caught tail end of a cyclone but torrential rain was no drawback as it stayed warm. Staff were very helpful and the cook was a star supplying us with excellent food throughout the stay. Everyone very polite and attentive. Went to nature park in the rain and saw Asian giant squirrel and owl. lovely wild rainforest.
