Where do we start?? We recently stayed in Ezhara Beach House as guests of Hyacinth, the host host with the most!!!
We had heard about her legendary meals, cooking and kindness but to experience this was second to none.
Hyacinth makes such a huge effort to ensure that you really understand the local culture, how the local markets work, where all her beautiful food comes from and the wonderful history of her location. Not only did we experience her wonderful hospitality and incredible variety of food presented for every meal, we also visited the local fruit ,veggie and fish markets, local shops, ate Fallooda's, visited local towns, museums and experienced the joy of Auyerdevic therapy's.
What an amazing experience!
Our room was quite fine. We had booked the entire top floor (on the recommendation of others), to give us a little more space and somewhere to store our luggage. We also then had our own bathroom. A good investment indeed.
The balcony was a bonus with lovely views of Ezhara Beach along with the much needed breeze. The beach was quiet, serene and peaceful. Plenty of places to walk to but not far in a Tuk Tuk to anywhere else you want to go ( for a very reasonable price).

During our stay we had a pet frog in our bathroom. What a magic experience!
He travelled around the bathroom during our stay. Lovely to have such a friendly frog share our space.
There is nothing to be worried about in staying in this low key guest house. There might be the odd bug but it is so much better than staying in a pristine and characterless hotel in a city. This is truely India with its friendliness, generosity and incredible culture.
Hyacinth was so very helpful throughout the entire booking process and during our stay. She bent over backwards to keep us informed of the facilities, the cost, payment options and when staying, dietary needs and entertainment.
You will never be bored
Were can guarantee that!
You won't be disappointed unless you leave it too late to book.
Book early so you are not disappointed!

Having booked an organised " full on " 14 day tour of Odisha I decided to add a stay here to relax and chill out before flying home.
Contacting Hyacinth via her website was simple and I booked 10 nights. I was pleasantly surprised to see the price includes breakfast and evening dinner as well. My room is cleaned and bedding / towels changed every other day.
My room at the top of the later extention to original property is more than expected with everything provided that you might need including full mosquito net, spacious bathroom plus private balcony with day bed from where I am writing this review looking at the beach through the coconut trees
Meals area variety of dishes changed daily - wonderful South Indian food in huge quantities - no need for lunch.

Hyacinth and her staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful giving suggestions of places of interest to visit. Went shopping with Hyacinth to Kannur taking the longer scenic route rather than main road to show me out of the way beaches and other local highlights. Also arranged a half day trip in a tuk tuk. Wonderful experience at less than £10.
My train travel arrangements for getting here and away organised in advance and tickets e mail to UK as well as being met at the railway station
If you want peace and quiet with hot sun, warm sea with and beaches that almost nobody uses this is the place to come. To paraphrase Milton : Not " Paradise Lost" rather " Paradise Found".

What can I say, this homestay has absolutely everything. Hycynith is one in a million a wonderful host, a one stop travel guide, an entertainer and a complete fountain of knowledge. The position is wonderful just a few yards from the sea. The food is outstanding Hyacinth checking what her guests would like for their evening meal. Still and sparkling water are available for guests all day, there is even fresh fruit available to nibble on. Iwill definitely be making a return visit

My family (wife and two teen age kids) stayed at the wonderful and character-filled Ezhara Beach House for three nights in early January as part of a three week trip around South India. These days on the beautiful, pristine beach by the Arabian Sea were magical and a real highlight of a trip filled with great experiences. Hyacinth, our dynamic host, and her excellent staff do a fantastic job from your moment of arrival making you feel at home and helping you take advantage of all of the great things to experience in the area. Beyond offering delicious, healthy and authentic local food, she caters to your dietary needs. For example, I have type 2 diabetes, and she found a wonderful whole grain red rice for me. She arranged for us to attend a Theyyam Dance, visit great local restaurants, shops and sites that would be hard for us to arrange on our own in the short time we had. The charming rooms, the relaxing and picturesque veranda, the outdoor dining area, were all unique and offered an experience that not only met all of our needs and comforts but allowed for a truly distinctive and authentic local experience. The beach house is situated in a small community of fishing families that adds to the experience. My wife is a teacher, and we walked a few minutes from the house to the local school where welcoming teachers and students introduced us to the school and spent time with us. Our 16 year old daughter, who is athletic, joined a group of local boys to throw and kick around a ball while swimming in the sea in front of the house. In our short visit we really felt like we were experiencing the place without the usual barriers of tourist vs local that is at times hard to penetrate. On top of all that, Hyacinth just has a special way of running the place. She clearly enjoys meeting people, likes to have conversation without formality, and is eager to do what she can to make sure you have a great time during your visit. We can't wait to go back!

Hyacinth’s house is surrounded by coconut palms set back a few metres from a beautiful quiet beach. The setting is idyllic. The house is old fashioned, homely and very comfortable. Hyacinth is an enthusiast about local food and took us to the market to show us where our food was sourced. She was very generous and provided all sort of entertainment from fireworks to getting your nails painted!
All the meals were delicious. Hyacinth has a great sense of humour and will be sure to make your stay very special. A place to relax, enjoy the wonderful surroundings and find out more about local culture.

We have travelled around this amazing country numerous times. However we are so glad we managed to make it back again to Ezhara Beach House, just before the world turned upside down. It's an oasis of peace and quiet in amongst the dust, noise, hustle and bustle of modern day India.

The lure, of what we call our second home, always calls to us. From the moment you alight from the tuk tuk that has been sent to collect you and see Hyacinths' beaming smile, you know you are back where you belong. We are always grateful that we stumbled across EBH back in 2009 but it is hard to actually put a finger on what is so special about this almost secret place. Could it be the picturesque deserted sandy beach that stretches off into the distance or the fact that very few people have ever visited this treasure of Kerala? Maybe it's the view from the comfy verandah, as you watch the sun slowly sink to the horizon through the waving palm trees? Perhaps it is the way you drift off to sleep with the sound of the waves lapping the nearby shore in the knowledge there is another day of bliss to look forward to? It goes without saying that without a doubt the meals you are given are a culinary delight and we always leave far heavier than when we arrived. Is this the reason?

On reflection, it is obvious now that it is a culmination of all of these things plus the friendliness and warmth that naturally flows from Hyacinth. You arrive as a pampered guest and leave in the knowledge that you have joined that exclusive club of her worldwide extended family.

If you are reading this, then we hope you stay safe and well and we would highly recommend you to consider Ezhara Beach House as a future destination for when things return to normal.

It has been 14 months since we visited this wonderful guest house on Ezhara Beach ,Kannur, Kerala, India.
We so look forward to returning as soon as it is possible to enjoy the peaceful environment, the wonderful food and the best host you could ever meet, Hyacinth.
Hyacinth makes your stay so special. She treats her guests to not only the most amazing food, there is also the comfy rooms, the most relaxed environment, and the best part....total cultural immersion. Hyacinth goes out of her way to impart the local culture with visits to the local markets, the Ayurvedic therapies, the local artisans, places of historical significance, festivals, museums, local delicacies, and will arrange transport to all these venues with a local tuk tuk.
The beach is so close to the guesthouse that you easily go for a long beach walk and return for the well earn’t swim.
We so look forward to this. Most of all we look forward to seeing Hyacinth’s beaming and welcoming smile when we get of the train or arrive in the tuk tuk. We highly recommend a stay at EBH and will be on the first plane there as soon as the borders are free.

Ezhara Beach House is on Ezhara Beach 12km from both Kannur and Thalassery. It is an easy train journey from Managaralu/Bengalaru in the north & Kochin in the south of Kerala.
We last visited EBH in March 2020 & vowed to return.
We were welcomed with open arms by Hyacinth the best host of any guesthouse/homestay we have stayed in.
Hyacinth offers total cultural immersion.
This is a heritage building so it is not a 5 star hotel but has the feel of a home once you walk in. The rooms are beautifully decorated, comfortable, provided with fans, snacks, and copious water. The bathrooms are spotless.
The meals are divine. Hyacinth ensures you know what you are eating by showing you the veggies prior to cooking explaining the balance in her choice of menu. There is opportunity to eat pure veg, pescatarian, or non veg. She will ask you your preferences but will also create dishes you want time again.
Breakfast and dinner are included in the tarrif with fruit for lunch. You will never go hungry. You are treated as if this is your home.
The beach is visible from the guesthouse with easy access to the beach. The beach is chilled.
The area where EBH is located is in a Muslim Colony therefore the area is conservative. When swimming at the beach it is important to take into account of the local culture & be respectful in your dress. This is just respecting local culture & should not detract from swimming in this lovely beach. It is possible to go for long walks along the beach and the sunsets are stunning. There is plenty of opportunities to enjoy Auyrvedic therapies in nearby Kannur. Transport is easily arranged via tuk tuk.
We had been travelling for over 5 weeks when we arrived at EBH, were pretty exhausted & 3 days in were starting to recover then 10 days at EBH has been the best medicine. Total relaxation, rebalanced, and recouped.
We highly recommend EBH as a home away from home.
Thank you Hyacinth for another wonderful time.

Not to scare but yes that was the date we reached this lovely place. The place has its charm and Hyacinth makes it more memorable than ever ,without her you will just have the beautiful beach view but with her you will carry memories back. The food is amazing here and the host knows what you need when you are staying here. we loved our stay thoroughly and if you guys want to experience hospitality then this place is a must. its quite difficult to find the place when it gets dark so my suggestion would be search for "EZHARA MAPILA LP SCHOOL" in your google maps. from here the place is very near and it would be easy to find out as maps sometimes wouldnt show the exact location of the property if you type the beach house. It was pouring cats and dogs and we reached the property at 7PM and it was quite dark on a friday 13th. Hence i am giving you guys the suggestion how reach the place even if it gets dark.. lol .. To sum it up 'Hyacinth you are the best Host and the charm of the place, you rock and keep others rocking".

I travelled with my husband and in-laws in Feb 2020. The guesthouse is just 2 min from the serene beach. The rooms are small but comfy. The terrace offers nice breezy views of the sunset. The food is absolutely delicious and Hyacinth is a great host who will go out of her way to make sure your stay is great. Will definitely recommend to anyone looking for a simple but hearty getaway. Tip: book the room on the 2nd floor for great views and a breezy terrace plus en suite bathroom.
