We have just spent 7 days at Petita Mare and had a delightful stay. The hotel and the views are stunning, the environment is tranquil and totally relaxing. If you want to escape and you want authenticity, simplicity and peacefulness then this is the place for you.

If you arrive and are disappointed by any aspects of service or the environment then you are missing the point of being there. Petita Mare is authentic, its not trying to be something its not, nor is it priced that way. The person who cooks your food, serves you breakfast, brings you coffee, serves you dinner and opens the gate for you are often the same person... we likened our stay to having a beautiful private finca all to ourselves and when we wanted lunch, dinner, coffee, wine etc, then we just had to ask. There are many quirks and ways of working that you my find odd, but that's part of the charm, we would not want to change it in any way.

Breakfast is served on the original olive press and is simple and delightful, the pool needs some of the mosaic tiles refitting, but again, you need to delight in the fact its clean, beautifully soothing, super quiet and has the most amazing views up the mountain and down the valley. Some of floors are difficult to walk across because they are the original farmhouse floors, again it's all part of the magic.

On the practical side; rent a car or motorbike, you will need it. If you are a cyclist then you have immediate access to some of the best climbs and descents in the world, and there is a local bike rental shop (RossRent) in Selva with a very friendly owner (Victor) and technician to kit you out. If you are a runner or hiker then there are plenty of local trails to explore.

As you can probably tell, we will be back, we loved our stay.

We have just spent 8 very relaxing nights at Es Castell. The finca is situated at the bottom of the Serra Tramantana Mountains within a 750 acre estate. The view from the terrace is breathtaking and despite its location the finca is surprisingly easy to find due to the very good directions provided on the website.
Parts of the building date back to the 11th century and it fits perfectly within its surroundings. Rooms are furnished tastefully and simply with nice touches such as a small vase of flowers, chocolates/bon-bons and atttractive tolietries.
The evening meals are very good - we enjoyed every course of every one of our 5 meals. Paola produces food that appears to draw on a range of influences with ingredients often sourced from the finca estate itself. Good, reasonably priced wine is available and James is happy to make suitable suggestions; watch out for the local digestif too! If eating in every night seems a little tedious, ask for local recommendations since we were steered towards some good restaurants.
There are many places like this across the Mediterranean. However, Es Castell is quite unique in that all of the people who work there are extremely welcoming and positive. We felt like 'guests' in the true sense of the word.
I would highly recommend Es Castell.

We travelled to Mallorca in October 2011 for our honeymoon and stayed at the Finca Es Castell for 5 nights. I cannot say enough good things about this beautiful little finca. The service was amazing, James and his staff were fantastic. All the other reviews that I've read of this place are completely true, it's an amazing place to stay. The staff at the finca are attentive when you need them, without being intrusive. The rooms are spacious and clean, and the grounds are beautiful. Whether your hiking around the grounds or lounging by the pool, you are going to enjoy every minute of your stay.

We made the finca our homebase during our stay and would pack up into our rental car each morning and check out different sites around Mallorca. We checked out all the different spots along the coast and had absolutely no regrets about our choice to stay in Caimari. We generally came back each night for the delicious four course supper, which was miles above the tourist trap fare you are going to find along the coast in Mallorca. We quickly discovered that you are not going to find a better place for supper at that price point anywhere else along the island.

Sigh. I wish I could go back right now.

The reviews drew us to the hotel and we were not disappointed. James and crew were brilliant.
Our suite was great, roomy and combined old charm with modern comforts such a modern walk in shower, food was varied and very good. Gardens relaxing and spacious with a lovely pool to cool off in. This place is heaven. 10/10.

Es Castell is all that it says in these reviews and more. A real star! There is just enough staff and service to tend to your needs but enough of a relaxed atmosphere that you can help yourself to drinks, ice creams, refreshments, ice, even a late-night bottle of red from their cellar with a convenient and well-thought honour system. This makes it feel as though you are a guest in a friend´s vila rather than in a hotel.

The casual but beautiful buffet lunch of salads, Mallorquin specialties (homemade tortilla, empanadas, sobrasada) and cold meats and rolls is light enough to leave room for dinner but substantial enough to keep you going while you lounge by the pool and read, nap, and relax throughout the afternoon.

Dinner is heavenly on the rooftop overlooking the island, the contrast of mountains against the valley and distant sea just magical. The daily four-course menu is simplicity at its finest celebrating local ingredients with a few surprising twists. Our fish soup, for example, was light and fresh with a delicious saffron broth but had a hint of ginger, coriander and chili. (My friends and I would love that recipe!) This menu changes daily and always begins with a Chef´s Surprise (our treat that night was a refreshing watermelon, mint and feta cheese salad).

The grounds are traditional Mallorquin, stone structures full of nooks and crannies, rustic woodwork, mature gardens and palms, cobblestone floors, olive presses and land to walk if you´re inspired. The main building also holds a cozy room in which to watch TV or play cards if the weather isn´t cooperating. And there are full bookshelves everywhere.

They proudly serve food from their grounds, everything from honey, oranges, lemons, clementines, olive oil, and figs to eggs, chicken and lamb (in early evening you will hear the distant ringing of sheep bells in the valley), and breakfast is a real treat.

Lastly, all that you read about James, his wife Paola, Lee and the rest of their staff are true.... all easy-going yet eager-to-please hosts who are welcoming and charming and helpful with whatever you need. In a word, bliss. Can´t wait to return.

We have just returned from this stunning hotel, where we have been thoroughly spoilt for ten days. James and Paola have thought of everything, great rooms, wonderful food and great staff - nothing is too much trouble. Having had a ten hour delay at the start of this holiday - we arrived very very late - only to be welcomed by Leigh offering to get us something to eat and drink at 1.00a.m. We were made to feel truly relaxed and at home - and will certainly go back again. However, just to mention that some of the reviews shown below are a little misleading - Finca Es Castell, is first and foremost a beautiful hotel which offers various activities one of which is Pilates at certain times of the year - so it would be very wrong to assume that this is just a Pilates centre, which from some of the reviews posted suggests.

R & J Hants.

We recently returned from a fabulous holiday at Finca Es Castelle and we cannot fault any aspect of our stay. This was a perfect place to relax but also a great base for cyclists & walkers in the Tramuntana mountains.
We requested a 10 night stay and James fitted us in with a suite for 5 nights & a double for the remaining 5 nights. It was an easy transition mid-way & gave us another wonderful view.
My partner took his own bike for cycling & James arranged for a taxi to collect us. There was a large secure space to keep the bike & this was an ideal location for some great mountain rides.
The location was so peaceful with the only sound from local sheep & goats; exactly what we were looking for. The staff were extremely friendly without being imposing. It almost felt like your own private house but without having to do any work!
The hotel dinners were so wonderful that we only ate out twice (once when the restaurant closed on Sunday). We also had lunch almost every day with the best salads you could wish for.
Breakfast was served outside with a great buffet selection & freshly squeezed orange juice & we could never turn down the made to order scrambled eggs. There was an honesty bar for daytime drinks / ice creams & free hot drinks with afternoon pastries. It worked perfectly.
Lovely touches in the room were the complimentary wine, the fresh flowers, robes & organic toiletries. Rooms were in keeping with the age & style of the property but the bathroom & showers were modern & first class & the rooms were spotlessly clean.
The location is remote so if you want to explore you will need a car but we rented a scooter for a couple of days from nearby Selva (they delivered to the Finca) & visited some beautiful villages & beaches which was enough exploring for us.
The fact that other guests were returning for the 5th and 10th time did not surprise us & we hope this will the first of many visits!

James and crew are still running a business that certainly has the formulae worked out.

Within a few minutes of arrival we remembered exactly what Es Castell does so well. We were de-stressed within minutes.

My wife and I were there for 9 nights this year, I can't think of a better place to spend my birthday(again).

We love the room (5) which is spacious, well laid out combining the feel of a county bedroom and modern bathroom facilities. The room does have a TV but we didn't even turn it on, what's a holiday for after all. Although I must admit we did watch the Germany Brazil humiliation with a nice bunch of Germans, Irish, Scottish and us in the TV room.

With beautiful gardens and a lovely pool the days of relaxation are great in this tranquil setting, we do turn into lounge potatoes but that's what makes it perfect for us.

Breakfast is a simple affair with a nice spread, breads, cheeses, cold meats, fruits and yoghurts etc with the ladies offering huevos revueltos (or any other egg combination)

During the day James runs an honesty fridge packed with the normal beers and soft drinks plus free coffee and differents teas.

Evening meals are taken on the terrace with superb views of the valley, you can even see the sea at the Bay of Alcudia.

There are plenty of alternative restaurants within easy reach in Binibona, Caimari, Selva and the Pollencas. We tried a few more of these this year and had some marvellous meals.

We will be back for our 3rd time next year. This place just feels right...

We have just (sadly!) returned from a fabulous week at Finca Es Castell. The views of the surrounding area were simply beautiful, the hotel itself was beautifully quaint and 'higgledy piggledy', yet with contemporary touches and an accent of comfort. Touches like tea-lights in rooms, replaced daily, along with bottles of water too. The honesty bar and complimentary tea/coffee/water,(and the odd sweet nibble!) just off the tranquil pool area were really lovely. We had our 13 year old daughter with us, she too loves her food and dining here did not disappoint! James and his staff were very approachable and helpful, and booked an alternative restaurant for dinner for us too. (We would recommend visiting Miceli in Selva and also Ca Na Toneta, both were examples of superbly traditional and lovely food.) Breakfast was excellent, an extremely good buffet available each morning, all wonderfully fresh and appealing. warm croissants would have been a welcome addition, but there always pastries or equivalent available. We were very lucky to have clear warm sunny days for most of our seven days, and, especially as having your daughter with us, travelled to a beach most days, the road 'network' is made up of a lot of very narrow windy lanes and journeys are interesting to say the least! Had we been travelling as a couple, we may well have spent more time in the hotels gardens and pool area, but felt it rather too tranquil and peaceful for any pool games etc for when my husband and daughter wanted to have a little more active fun, although we spent quite sometime playing dominoes poolside together!! We would most definitely return to this hotel should we visit Majorca again,it really was a lovely stay.

We just returned from 4 days at this Finca. We are a family of 5(3 daughters ages 9,12,14) and wanted to explore the Northern part of Mallorca. This Agroturismo was perfectly situated along the Foothills of the Serra Tramontana. While some might consider the location remote(10 minutes drive to closest pueblo), we found it totally pleasant and manageable. James and staff were excellent, breakfast was delicious with fresh juice, homemade breakfast pastries & muslii, french press coffee and bacon/eggs prepared to your liking. We dined one night as a family at the Finca and it was excellent. Another night we left our daughters in the staffs hands while we went out for a quiet evening and they were most accommodating! While the weather was just a tad bit cold for swimming the pool and patios were gorgeous and most inviting. We had two rooms(adjoining via a bookcase!) and spectacular country views. Really a wonderful setting for a romantic getaway, family, bikers, etc. We will definitely recommend it to others!

Hi John The Finca is in the centre of the island so is not near the sea. If you want to get out and about a car is essential The nearest beach would be approximately half an hours drive away. The Finca staff would book a taxi but most people only use them to/from airport as Finca is approximately 20 minutes drive from nearest town here there would likely be taxis.
