We had a great stay from 13 to 15May. The general ambience was one of peace and calm. The hosts were gracious and the staff helpful. The food was great. Each dish was a delectable delicacy. Visit , if for nothing else, for the food. Each dish we ate had a distinct taste.
If someone told you Mitali serves the most wonderful food in all of Santiniketan, they are telling the absolute truth. It really is the place to eat heavenly meals. So it was a treat for us to stay there, discuss the possible menu combinations, see the masterful Sukanya in action in her massive kitchen (helped by a great team of women trained by her) and then devour each course with conversations about travels and culture and politics and what not... The house is sprawling, well lived in, stuffed with this and that, surrounded by gardens and vegetable patches. When we were not eating :), we spent the day meeting and seeing different areas recommended by Sukanya and Krishno Dey. They also have a nice boutique of natural dyed garments inside the home grounds. For me, the mornings were about walking around a nearby lake and canal. So if you want to dive quickly into the slow, unhurried pace of Santiniketan, stay here. …
We were a group of three families visiting Shantiniketan in August 2021 and we boarded for a couple of nights at Mitali. It is a beautiful quaint homestay with a picturesque garden, delightfully old fashioned and tastefully designed with a lot of heart. However, there are a few riders here which makes this homestay a little less than a splendid experience to have. The property has one main building which is almost at the center of the real estate and an annexe building behind it. The rooms of the main building and the annexe building don't equal in size as well as aesthetics. This disparity could be a little upsetting as tariffs for all rooms are the same. The staircase to the rooms in the annexe building are uneven and not suitable for the aged. Hence, it is advisable to seek clarity beforehand on which room is being allotted. The rooms also need a little bit of retouching in terms of furniture and lighting. The lighting of the rooms is particularly quite pedestrian and snuffs the overall vibe of the place. The food and the kitchen staff are equally good, although we felt that the pricing of the food can be looked into. The owners are good hosts and they definitely make the overall experience pleasurable and warm.…
Mitali Homestay was a quinessential Bengali Home, complete with the Bharar Ghar (Butler's pantry) and bagan (garden). The hostess, Shukarna has a very calming and soothing personality. I personally liked the place more because of how much Shukarna made us feel so welcome and at home. It felt like coming home after a long interval, away. The food was freshly cooked and deliciously different. However, I did feel that it could be revamped and the facilities updated to focus on cleanliness and sanitation. While the rooms were spacious, the en suite could do with some TLC. I would have preferred the lighting in the rooms to be brighter, with table lamps by the bedside, so I could read myself to sleep. The TV did not seem to be working - but that was not a major. Perhaps, Shukarna would consider decluttering a bit and changing the upholstery and curtain. With a little bit of updating and revamping, Mitali could sparkle with brightness and welcome more guests, while retaining its old world charm. I would love to re visit, after the revamp, if and when, possible.…
Met Sukanya the owner and main chef of Mitali's kitchen. She showed us around and saw that they grew their own vegetables and other herbs. It was a very lush and well maintained property with a green lawn and the restaurant was housed separately. It is a well maintained restaurant good for close to 30 people. Sukanya attends to her guests personally and also told about the food that she had prepared for us. They have global entree's as well - but we stuck to the local flavors. They offer thali's - and you can order on the side as well. Overall a very good meal but a tad expensive meal, courteous host/owner and local flavours.
The Mitali House is surrounded by a lovely well-kept garden so from your room you see green and flowers. The interior is decorated with taste and many elements that will make you feel like at home, at least this was my feeling since the first moment I arrived. Breakfast is really generous: what I loved most where the home-made jams from homo-grown organic fruits and flowers. Quiet is at home there, so enjoy great nights of sleep, lazy afternoons on the rooftop terrace or suggestive nights looking at the stars. But the best of the house are the two owners who inspired me with tips about the city and took me for walks into local handicraft shops and markets. As a solo traveller I also enjoyed stimulating conversations with them about the life and work of Tagore as well as more personal honest exchange about ourselves. I am already looking forward to coming back to this place. …
We were a group of nine cousins, all females, from different parts of India visiting Shantiniketan. Our stay at Mitali homestay was a wonderful experience. We received personal attention from the host/owner couple, Mr. Krishno and Mrs. Sukanya Dey. We soaked in the old world royal charm of the house. The surrounding gardens are an attraction with well grown flowers, fruits and vegetables. Smt. Sukanya pampered us with her exotic Bengali dishes and sweets. The hot breakfast on the terrace was an icing on the cake. We relished dishes made from freshly plucked cabbages, banana stem, drumstick leaves, coriander, baby carrots and spinach. Also tasted the fresh strawberries grown painstakingly by Sukanya. Sukanya also has a well stocked boutique in the premises with sarees, tops, skirts and stoles to die for. Overall we had a wonderful stay at Mitali and would recommend to all those who want to soak themselves in the peace and tranquility of Shantiniketan…
We visited this property in early December and had a wonderful experience. Shantiniketan is a special destination for all Rabindranath Tagore's admirers and followers. We were searching for the right place to stay there and we found this as our best option and our expectations were not only met but we were surprised by the hospitality, cuisine and knowledge of the host and hostess. The kitchen garden providing fresh produce for the meals and every meal were served with utmost care. Bengali, Continental, Thai and whatever you chose were provided. The atmosphere was very nice with garden and serenity all around. Easy access and close to Vishwabharati. The rooms could be made a little better as well as the bathrooms. It is not suitable for big groups I feel. Great stay. Will definitely return. Stayed for two nights.…
