Travellers' Choice
The beauty of the islands that make up the Maldives live up to all that has been written about them. The blue lagoons and dazzling white beaches fringed by swaying coconut palms challenge the scope of any camera, and Dhuni Kolhu is said to be the most stunning of them all. Located in Baa Atoll, 124km from Male’ international airport, and easily reached by a 30 minute seaplane flight or a domestic flight followed by a short speedboat ride, Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu captures tropical magic in abundance, beautifully balancing the island’s bountiful vegetation with the resort’s architectural charisma. Inspired by the flourishing sea life and local customs, the resort has been built in harmony with the natural environment. Guests have their own luxury villa, either dotted among palm trees offering peaceful tranquility or on stilts over the lagoon, with spectacular views of the ocean and nearby desert islands. Wood, rattan and cotton furnishings complete the picture of laid-back tropical elegance. The 32 Beach Villas, 25 Sunset Beach Villas, and 27 Deluxe Villas have a Maldivian charm and paradise appeal, whilst the 12 Lagoon Villas offer a refined experience of exclusivity and indulgence. The 2 Sunset Lagoon Villas feature the height of luxury with a separate bed- and living room, Jacuzzi, and wide sundeck with private pool. There are two relaxed bars and a choice of tantalizing dining options, both indoor and outdoor under a canopy of Banyan trees. For the more adventurous, Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu has a variety of Uniquely Coco experiences on offer, including private overnight stays at a near-by deserted island, snorkeling excursions with the resident Marine Biologist to swim with Manta Rays and Sea Turtles, sandbank picnics, scuba diving, island hopping, and sunset fishing. Relaxation can be found at Coco Spa where guests can experience Asian-inspired treatments or participate in Yoga lessons at the beach. Creatively conceived and superbly designed to blend into the natural environment, Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu is the ultimate authentic Maldivian hideaway.

Tidy rooms, extremly friendly personnel, amazing view, gorgeous waters and sea life. The over the sea laguna room are really luxurious, min-bar available in all rooms, fresh exotic fruits each day at the restaurant and you could see the personnel working and tidying every day not only the rooms, but also the beach and the island.

We spent a lovely week at the hotel on Cast Away package, which included two nights on an uninhabited island, among other perks of the deal. I would highly recommend this unusual experience if you are a slightly more adventurous type. We saw a massive turtle come out of the water late at night to nest, and freaky yet amazing crab creatures who expropriate abandoned shells to hide in them from being eaten by birds. We woke up on the beach to watch the sunrise, and the night before we were served an excellent bbq dinner on the beach by Naman and Mohamed (who then both left the island for the hotel). Clear unspoilt water, soft sand and lush vegetation - this is how you’d imagine an uninhabited Maldivian island to be. I won’t talk much about the hotel itself, as a lot has been written already in other posts. Maybe just a word of advice - do explore the dining offers they have rather than just sticking with the dinners in the main restaurant. The Thai restaurant is excellent, the gourmet dinner on the beach was very high quality, the a la cart at the Conch bar provided both a relaxed atmosphere and a good quality alternative to the main restaurant. Last, but in fact the main reason why I am writing this review is to thank the staff for going out of their way to make our stay enjoyable - not once, not twice, but many times every day. Thank you to Anas for reorganising our dates after the flights were rescheduled and then for providing first aid to my parter when he injured his foot on a coral. Thank to Raazi and to Shameer for not loosing patience with our non-standard requests (yes I know we can be not the easiest guests), to Mammoon who looked after our villa, and to everyone else whom we probably came across once or twice and did not remember the name but do remember the smile and the genuine attitude that made our stay so memorable. We had the most amazing experience at Coco Palms Dhuni Maldives! This was our very first trip to Maldives and we are glad we chose Coco Palms Dhuni for it. Starting from the time we landed in Maldives. The staff took great care of us at the lounge in Male as our sea plane transfer got delayed due to bad weather that day. But once the weather cleared we hopped on to the sea plane which was a lovely experience, had witnessed such thing for the very first time. The staff guided us till the very last minute. Once we reached the resort we were just mesmerised with the beauty of the island. We were awestruck by it. We had booked the deluxe villa which was a gem with a pool in it and private access to the beach which was the most amazing part. The resort is traditional and gives you actual feel of maldivian culture which is the best part. It’s not commercial at all and extremely private. They have a brilliant spa and it was one of the best spas I have got done till now, special thanks to Krutika. Special mention about the Turtle rescue centre there, where they treat injured turtles. It’s brilliant the way they take care of those sea turtles. Some great work happening there. Chef garden is pretty, the tennis court is huge. Love love love the beach bar, saw one of the best sunsets there with lovely cocktails. Conch bar is another beauty there with amazing cocktails, crazy view and good food. Special mention to Mani and Mohammad who took very good care of us on all days. Cowrie restaurant is good too, but the buffet can be better with more options and varieties. Also the quality of food can improve at cowrie a little. Although the staff there took good care of us. Special mention to Neelam who followed all protocols and made sure we were comfortable. Chef Siyad took good care. Biggest shout out to the person who guided us with each and every thing at the resort, Shameer. He explained us everything very clearly, gave honest opinions and tool very good care of us. The staff is extremely hospitable and took care of us till the very last minute of reaching the airport back. Overall this was one of the best holidays we have had till date. Would recommend Coco Palms Dhuni visit to everyone!

To summarise I would just say wow! Also, in summary: Pros - Amazing staff; friendly, helpful, hardworking and (in my opinion) underappreciated by guests. The service is excellent from arrival in Male onwards Peaceful and remote enough to be very relaxing, yet close enough to Male in case of emergencies The widest variety of wildlife both in and out of water I have ever experienced in one hotel. Corals within 1 metre of shore Clever and subtle use of climate change measures As Eco friendly as they can be No TV’s in the Villas, we find this a massive plus, but some might not Cons - Communication of management could be better The island is tropical and by the sea, with natural products being used to build villas etc. Therefore, expect some wear and tear as it is only natural There could be more Maldivian elements included, e.g., music Climate change is an issue, but Coco Palm are doing their best to combat it So now to the detail. We travelled in the midst of COVID and had already spent 12 hours in FFP2 masks at our departure airport and in the Lufthansa flight on the way there. We were met at arrivals and transported to the hotel lounge at departures of the Trans Maldivian Airlines terminal on the other side of the International airport. We were amazed at the beauty of the lounge and level of service we received almost immediately and really appreciated the Nespresso coffee and water we got while we waited for our seaplane flight to the island. The flight was then a truly amazing experience as you get to see the resorts from above, along with their corals and sandy beaches from a viewpoint you would never normally have. The colours of the Maldives are truly unique and outstanding in their beauty. The flight only took 30 minutes with two stops at other resorts on the way. The seaplane then landed next to a pontoon in the ocean opposite the Lagoon villas and a speed boat came out to pick us up from there before the plane left again. A very short 5 minutes to the jetty and we had arrived. We were then led to the beautiful reception area and welcomed by Susanna, an Italian, who explained about the resort and led us to our villa. She told us we were going to a Lagoon villa when we had booked a Deluxe Beach Villa with Plunge pool and when I queried this, she said we must have received an upgrade. Well, we were blown away when we entered the Lagoon villa (97, which is the sunset side of the island), which was huge. Not only did it have a Jacuzzi in the bathroom, but also had a sun deck with recessed plunge pool and your own steps leading into the ocean below. Additional touches, like a Nespresso machine and 3 capsules per day really stunned us and we were over the moon. From the deck we saw all sorts of sea life including a sea turtle that swam past, absolutely stunning. The only negative about the Lagoon Villas is they are opposite the sea plane landing area and so swimming is limited there. The planes land from 07:30 am, but not necessarily every day and we did not find them to be intrusive. So, having arrived in paradise to an amazing experience we were a bit shocked on the fifth day. We are early sleepers and had gone to bed around 21:00 the night before. My wife was suffering from Jet lag and so we overslept and missed breakfast at the restaurant, but no problem, we decided to pay for an in-villa breakfast instead. This arrived at 11:00 and the very nice chap who brought the breakfast then told me we had a letter waiting outside. I opened this and it was informing us we were being moved …. At 11:00 …. So stunned I rang reception and they confirmed we were to move to our originally booked villa. They gave us 30 minutes to pack and I think the management really should have been more on the ball and should have left the note much earlier in the evening before so we had a chance to actually see it. Anyway, we packed and didn’t really get the chance to enjoy our in-villa breakfast, but were ready to move at 11:30. We were then led to Deluxe Beach villa 65, however, when they opened the door and we walked in there was a strong smell of mould in the air and, as I suffer from sleep apnoea, I was adamant I would not stay in the villa. Reception sent housekeeping to us, who was a lovely man named Shakir and I explained the problem to him. He then got the manager to come from reception who agreed to move us next door to villa 66, however, it was still being cleaned from the previous occupants. Having looked around, I know what the mould problem was. The roofs of the villas are thatched with Palm leaves and the ones at 65 were covered in green. I have no problem with this, when you use natural products and are next to the sea in a tropical climate these things happen and we saw they were in the process of refurbishing and re-roofing two villas while we were there. Villa 66 had been recently refurbished so we were happy. The Deluxe Beach villa 66 was also great, if a little of a come down after the Lagoon villa as there was no Nespresso machine or jacuzzi here. That said, we had booked this originally and were fully aware of this, and the fact you have a private garden area around your plunge pool with direct access to the beach really does make it worthwhile staying in these. The first coral was only 1 metre from shore and the abundance of reef fish and other sea life was truly astounding. The coral has suffered from bleaching, but are not all dead and seem to be doing pretty well. There were some sand bags lined into the sea approximately every 4 villas along the beach, but these are needed to stop fast sand erosion from the beaches and were mostly subtly placed so that they were not an eyesore. Getting round the island is easy as there are paths through the ‘jungle’ leading to most everywhere on the island. There is even a hidden Chef’s garden and Banana garden to discover, which are well worth a visit. Having arrived in shoes, I didn’t wear anything on my feet until we left again, a very pleasant experience! Meals were on a buffet basis and served in the main restaurant, the Cowrie, or there were snacks available at certain times of the day at the Conch bar. There was always a good selection and choice of food at the Cowrie, although I personally would have preferred more local Maldivian options. That said, there was always something tasty and great quality to eat and the only negative experience I had was related to the other guests who seemed to completely ignore the fact there was/is a global pandemic raging. Staff were always amazing and wore both gloves as well as masks, but the guests were not required to and so didn’t, also not keeping social distancing. This amazed us and we wore masks while selecting our food from the buffet and were always careful to disinfect our hands after using the available spoons/tongs to pick up food. I read some complaints about the service, people do have to remember that they are understaffed given the pandemic and the available staff did their best to provide excellent service. All too quickly, our two weeks was over and we were due to return home. We live in Germany and the government here requires us to have a negative PCR test no older than 48 hours on arrival in Germany. We told management at reception this and they assured us it would not be a problem When we went to have our tests done by the nurse at the medical centre (in the Spa by the way), she was stunned when we said we were flying the next day, but also said it should be ok. We eventually did get our negative PCR test results 2 minutes before departure, we were concerned, but they did keep their promise and we had it in our hands before our flights. With heavy hearts, we then went to the jetty to catch our sea plane and were surprised to see 20 or so members of staff (including head chef) waiting there to see us off. We left in the speed boat seeing them wave to us, such a special moment for us and then we boarded the seaplane and had a last view of the island as we flew away. We did not expect the amazing service we received to continue, but it did with us being met from the sea plane arrivals and brought to a bus to take us to the main airport. Not only that, the driver handed us over to another Coco Palm staff member who helped us with our bags and took us through security right up to the que to check in. Never had that level of service before and am truly thankful to everyone from Coco Palm. Shukriya!
