6 of us stayed at the Alpengruss Motel (separate rooms) for two nights for a wedding near Wakefield, QC. The motel was very comfortable and clean. Lindsay (reception and welcome) was friendly and helpful. There was an issue with lack of water to some of the rooms on one of the mornings, but the owners, and maintenance did everything possible in a timely manner to make guests feel comfortable until the problem was remedied. Wakefield is a lovely village to visit and the Alpegruss Motel is within walking distance of many shops and restaurants. The price we paid was reasonable without breaking the bank - but don't expect fancy - it's a clean, comfortable motel to lay your head
Had the price been halved, due to lack of amenities, this review may have been rated higher. The motel is for sale & appears to be closed at first glance. The much praised restaurant has been closed down. When we booked with Alpengruss the proximity of the restaurant was a factor, to no avail. Staff were very courteous but not readily available. They only seemed to be around a couple of hours per day & not for the checking in/out process. The two rooms we booked ran out of bathroom tissue and we had to become creative as, yet again, there wasn't any Staff around to replenish. On the hottest week of the summer season the A/C did not work. Thankfully there was a portable fan in the room as the window was missing the handle and could not be cranked open. The beds were comfortable, plenty of hot water for showers and the Staff ( the one brief time they were available) were friendly. This room should have been $69 per night and Alpengruss should be required to update their website. Perhaps under new ownership this potentially charming establishment will merit the room fee of $119 per night. Definitely not as it is right now.…
I have been travelling to the Wakefield, QC area for business for over three years. Have stayed at The Alp on many, many occasions. Some of the negative reviews here are so far off the mark. It’s a restored, older establishment so it *is* rustic but that is part of the charm. The hotel/motel has upgraded many of the rooms and they’ve never been unsatisfactory in any way. (I have stayed at all of the higher end hotels in downtown Ottawa and would pick The Alp over all of them.) So close to Ottawa. Ease of use at property location, ease of booking, beautiful setting. The important things are there in spades. CLEAN. Great service. Great value. Very responsive to inquiries, information or extras. The natural setting is gorgeous; a stone’s throw from the beautiful Gatineau River. Walking distance to all the many great shops, restaurants, pubs and live music venues in the Village of Wakefield, Quebec; a well-known year-round tourist destination known for its eclectic vibe. Home to dozens of artists, writers and musicians. It really is a diamond in the rough. There’s a reason The Alp is usually at capacity in the high season months. Wakefield also has an extensive network of walking and hiking trails, ski hills as well as nearby golf courses. I would – and have – recommended the Alpengruss many, many times and would not hesitate to do so in the future.…
First impressions, looks sketchy. Building next to the road was or is a restaurant, not sure. Needs an exterior make-over. Visually greated with an abundance of large blue bins and an old sailboat Drive up the hill and things get progressively better. Room 13 has a brand new bathroom, beds are Uber comfortable and staff is friendly.
clean comfy and excellent location, large rooms with comfortable beds and close to everything in small quaint village of wakefield ,would recommend for a night or a weekend stay...thank you...Restaurants and bars, covered bridge all close by,5 minute walk at the most, beautiful area and this hotel is great for a decent price...
The Alpengruss is one of the few hotel options in Wakefield, and one of the most appealing for the budget-conscious. With that in mind, you get what you pay for: Average price, average quality. We spent three nights at the hotel. We were moved out of our first room while my wife was in the midst of taking a bath -- water was leaking from the bathtub piping into the room below. The desk attendant (the only one we saw during our stay, and she was only there during the day) knocked on the door, handed my wife a key to another room, and told her we would have to move immediately. The second room was an upgrade of sorts. The central room was quite clean and comfortable, but the bathroom shared the run-down agedness of the first room. Both rooms sported a colourful "flea market" array of mismatched furnishings. The hotel is -- in general -- in need of a paint job. The stairs to the second story desperately need refurbishing. And it needs to be brought about 40 years up-to-date. There are undoubted positives: It is in a wonderfully quiet spot, surrounded by trees. And at about half-occupancy we never heard other guests.…
Due to my father's illness, I had to cancel the hotel reservation and have been trying t do so for a week. I have been calling and leaving phone messages, sent a reply email using the confirmation email address and sent an enquirery from the website. A week later I still don't have a call back or any response from the motel confirming my cancellation. I am both upset and frustrated since I have not been able to reach anyone and I am pretty sure they are going to try and apply a charge on my credit card for this coming weekend. So I give the Motel a low rating based only on just communication and customer service since I have never actually not been able to stay.
Many original charming features in this motel. Exposed Brick, Ceiling Beams, Fireplace and covered Deck. Parking lot well maintained and very close to ski vorlage. Absolutely love Wakefied. Issues were very poor noise insulation. Sorry to our neighbors as we had to sleep with TV on to drown out their voices. Only 1TV channel came in. Fridge handy for snacks. I'm told Wakefield is very safe, however lack of internal lock on door made me uncomfortable. No chain or deadbolt just a single exterior key, auto locking door. I do hope this place can make a comeback, it truly is charming.
We stayed for one night in November 2017 and were really impressed with the value for this hotel! The room was really clean and the bed was really comfortable. This hotel exceed our expectations for the price of it.
We checked in on Thursday last week (31st) and were happy with our room. It seemed like renovations were done recently and it was nice to walk in to a room that was sunny and bright. We weren't looking for luxury as the sights and sounds were in the town. Only complaint I had was it said motel and cafe but the cafe has been closed for numerous years.
