Detailed Reviews
We stayed 3 nights at Garden Inn, and they also organized a 2 day/ 1 night Jungle trekking experience that was fantastic.
They are located a short walk outside of the Centre of town so you don’t hear any noise from the town, but can walk there in 5-10 mins. You only have the peaceful sounds of the river and the great views of the forest which you can watch from the balcony of the room or the restaurant.
The staff at the Garden in were very friendly, and they helped organise the jungle trek and car rides to/ from Bukit Lawang at a good price. The food from the restaurant was also very good - especially the BBQ fish!
Our guides for the jungle trekking, Pen and Bob, were very knowledge about the jungle, and went above and beyond our expectations to make sure we had the best experience. Once we got to camp we were joined by cook Jul, and all three were great company in the evenings and helped my the experience even more memorable with their jungle games and good humor. They also served seriously good food from the jungle kitchen!!!

We just stayed at the lovely Garden Inn for two days of Orang Utan trekking. The team was so helpful and friendly we loved everything about it. Everything is simple but good! We loved the food and drinks! The vegetable curry and
Coconut milkshake were amazing. Our guide was Eru and he was also so friendly and knowledgeable. It’s located right next to the river and we even spotted two orang utans right in front of garden inn on the other river side. All together an unforgettable stay we will keep in our hearts! Thank you garden inn!!

We stayed with 4 children from 11 to 21 years old for 5 nights. We ate at the restaurant a few times and completed a one day trek with the Garden Inn team. The staff where really friendly and helpful. The food was good, the rooms were lovely and the trek was excellent: huge thanks to our guides Juhri and Ewin they were really knowledgeable and very helpful when trekking. We had some issues with a toilet which was fixed quickly and Ben and his team where really flexible about us making changes to our trekking plans... we ended up eating our trekking meal at the restaurant which was really tasty and beautifully presented.

The hotel facilities are nice. The staff is friendly and cordial, but they lose interest once you hire the guide service to see the orangutans and the transportation. The owner, Brigitte, only contacts you to confirm the additional services she is going to hire, after that. Zero contact.
Adi the guide is excellent. And Pen the coordinator is very good at his job.
The breakfast they offer is really bad. Tea, 1 egg and 1 slice of bread cut in half is breakfast. They also offer fruit 2 small pieces of pineapple and 2 small pieces of watermelon. That doesn't even feed a child. Furthermore, on the second day of my stay there were no eggs, not one…
There is no soap or shampoo in the rooms. But they do NOT say that in the hotel's advertisement.
The sheets and towels smell damp and the water sometimes comes out brown. You should always brush your teeth with bottled water, which is obviously sold at a high price.
They promote themselves as a 3 star site but it really is not. It's not even 2 stars.
Look for another option, this hotel only has good facilities and additional services can be obtained at a better price outside the hotel.

Wow, what an amazing trip. We spent 3 days at
Garden Inn, the rooms are beautiful, very clean
and spacious including a balcony with a stunning
view. Every morning we were greeted by many
monkeys playing and chilling on the balcony, to
be that close was just incredible.
The food at the hotel restaurant was delicious
and the best food we have had in Indonesia so
far, from our experience of the restaurants in Bukit
Lawang our hotel restaurant definitely surpassed
all of them. Each night the restaurant would be
full, including guests from other hotels. Try the
vegetable curry, you won't be disappointed.
The staff at the hotel were all lovely, extremely
helpful and couldn't do enough for us. They also
arranged our transfers to and from Medan and
the whole experience was seamless.
We booked a two day one night jungle trek
through the hotel and it was one of the best
experiences of our life. We saw many
orangutang's and other species of monkey,
monitor lizard's etc. But best of all, we had Rio as
our tour guide and he made the whole experience
unforgettable. He is an amazing multi talented
guide, he made us laugh, prepared us amazing
fruit platters in the jungle, was extremely
informative and knowledgable through out and
made us feel extremely safe.
Thank you Garden Inn for an amazing trip.

Although the hotel was aware of our arrival time, was very surprised to be met at the bus station by Pen from the hotel who took us direct to the hotel. An oasis far from the madding crowd, exceptionally quirky room with beautiful detailing, built into the side of a cliff with the rock exposed. Large bed, with good quality bedding, towels and mosquito net. The bathroom to the same standard (hot water shower). The view from the room and terrace was of the river and jungle.
All the staff are very friendly and helpful, with very good English. The food in the restaurant was excellent and the beer was always cold.
We booked a jungle hike through the hotel and our guide Rio was very knowledgeable and was very helpful when I found part of the terrain difficult with my injury. We saw Orangutans and the rarely seen big male Orangutan. We also saw Thomas Leaf monkeys, Gibbons and a Binturong or Asian Bear Cat.
Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, charging points in the restaurant and water refills. They were able to book onward transport
A great stay and cannot find any faults

The stay here was sort of a highlight of our trip. The place is just on the banks of river. Our room was on first floor with bath and toilet in ground floor. the whole structure was of wood and stones. Balcony had a hammock and rope to dry clothes, with view of the raging river. There were visiting monkeys who tried to take our drying clothes, intruding frogs and a friendly cat that demanded to be pet.
There are no AC, fan, running hot water in bathroom or kettle or teacoffee provisions in room. Bottled water is at your own cost, and as everything in Bukit Lawang, its over priced. Only veg breakfast option we had was bread and Jam. They provide a big tin box in room to store all your valuables i.e. food items!!!
Cars cannot reach this place. Its a 2 km from the parking. Locals will charge 50K IDR for dropping one suitcase from parking lot. The crew helps in pickup and drop on 2 wheelers.
Still the place is awesome..Wish we spent more time here.

We loved it and stayed longer than planned, but still didn't want to leave. The place is so beautiful and relaxed. No clock anywhere. No hurry. No stress. Pelan pelan, tapi pasti.
We did a 1 day jungle trek with Rio and Juhri, and it was amazing. We saw one wild orang oetan, and two semi wild ones. Also many other beautiful animals! The trek was a bit challenging because of the heavy rain the nights before, but I felt safe with them the whole way. Rio and Juhri are the best guides you could wish for! They are very experienced, focused, fun, and know exactly when to help.
We hung out at the restaurant a lot. We talked and played games with other guests and the staff, owner included. It really has a hostel feeling there, but with the privacy of your own beautiful room.
Ujai and Rapindo can help you with every question. Trips in the area, tips for other places and transport, even for help getting medication (my skin reacts really bad to some mosquito bites and I forgot to bring my medication..)
Also ask Rapindo or Ujai about the village tour, we loved it!
They could also organise a daytrip to Tangkahan for us.
You should go meet Babeh and Itchan (excuse the spelling) at their art shops, they are the best. We spend a whole afternoon hanging out with them, making some art and music.
We didn't have water for a day because wild pigs destroyed the pipes, but even that was totally fine (and funny). They immediately went up the hill to fix it.
It was also beautiful to watch the thunderstorm from our room. I've never seen something like it. The power goes off and on during the storm, for safety, but also completely fine.
The room has an amazing view on the jungle. You can spot monkeys from your room.
When you walk a bit to the right, you will reach a beautiful and quiet "beach", and you can walk a bit into the jungle besides the river. It's really nice.
Always ask them first if it is okay to swim that day. Sometimes the river is too high, fast or dirty, they will know.
TLDR; amazing if you want to feel one with nature, and we love the people there!

I am so glad to have met Ujai and his staff. It was positive to see Ujai as a great mentor for the next generation of young locals towards sustainable tourism and development :) As a solo traveller, I was definitely well looked after.
Pen was fun to have as a guide on the jungle trek, and I highly recommend him for your next trip.
Everything was great, but do be aware that the macaque monkeys can be bothersome if you leave food in your balcony.

Had the chance to stay at the Garden Inn overlooking the river. It is nestled into the jungle and is a quiet area. The rooms are clean and the staff is friendly. Hot showers and cheeky monkeys.
We did the Garden Inn’s 2 day/ 1 night jungle trek. Our tour guide and his assistant (Guri and Erwin) were fantastic. The said that it is “not a competition” and that we would go at our own pace. They made sure that our trek was safe and assisted us through the jungle. Allowed for many breaks (it is hot and humid!) and provide snacks and lunch during our trek. We saw many orangutans during our trek, including a male orangutan that they said is usual to see up close and that they had not seen a male in 4 months.
Camp site was nice and our chef An provided us with a great Indonesian dinner (food was delicious and it’s amazing what they can cook up in the middle of the jungle).
The next day they offered another short hike or a visit to the waterfall followed by a rafting trip back to our hotel.
The garden Inn allowed for us to shower when we returned (as we had already checked out before the trek).
Guri and his team was a delight and we had a fantastic time.

Hi! I don't personally know that information, but if you go on Garden Inn's website, a lot of that information is posted. Also, I emailed them a bunch of times with random questions and they were very quick and thorough with answers. I hope this helps! You will love Bukit Lawang!!!!
