Two young men dressed in grubby tracksuits pants and tee-shirts helped us to carry our bags from the car. They seemed a little confused.
We were met by a Mr. Jeevan, the manager, who was splendidly attired in an old track suit with curry stains. He was hospitality itself when he showed us the three rooms on offer. These were in a building adjacent to the main house.
We gratefully accepted an offer of tea and found that the owner's family had precedence at the main house verandah table and we took out tea on the charpoy beside our room. We shortly left to see the town.
We returned later and found that the bathroom needed cleaning, which I did myself as it clearly had not been touched for at least two months. Only took fifteen minutes. The housekeeping manager supplied a brush and cleaning gel. The floor of the room was dirty to the extent that it was obvious it had not been cleaned for something like a year. I tried to clean a patch about three inches square. The dirt completely clogged a handful of tissue in a few seconds. Truly filthy. The walls had several rusty trickle marks from holes in the roof and the monsoon rains. Did not bother us as the weather was fine.
Dinner was served in the main house dining room. The dining room is a fascinating shrine to the memory of M. M. Upadhayay, a Freedom Fighter. The cook is skilled and prepared us a tasty dinner.
That evening my wife tried to watch television. Despite plentiful attention from the housekeeping staff the subscription could not be revived. No great loss. Later, when the lights were put out, I was amazed to find that after a thirty second delay the ceiling light would magically re-light itself. It seemed immune to the command of the wall switch. I removed the bulb and had a good night's sleep.
For Breakfast we were given excellent dahi and indifferent paratha with an excellent view.
All in all the property is testimony to the amazing durability of the archictects of 1905. Essentially no maintenance has been done since that time. It could be one of the greatest tourism properties in India. It desperately needs a thorough cleaning.
Positives:
1) Lot of history, and well preserved.
2) Amazing view of Himalaya, unfortunately during my stay it was cloudy.
3) Great Food, nice freshly prepared food as per your requirement.
4) Friendly staff, who are eager to help you, assist you and share the rich history of the place.
5) WiFi enabled
Negatives:
1) Not kids friendly place, as the location is on steep hill and there are no sufficient safety measure for kids. No entertainment for for kids except for sea-saw & slide.
2) Feels away & Isolated, i know this can be a positive point for some people as well.
3) place can be updated with new amenities to provide more comfort for travelers, like better quality blankets, heaters, etc.
overall a great experience, but missed on the view of Himalaya.
Close your eyes to mismatched plastic cheap chairs and curtains, etc.. Which do not match with the Hotels history.
The place, surely needs a complete overhaul, time for the Government to take a call to collaborate to bring Heritage properties with funding and relaxed conditions of renovating Heritage Hotels located in Defense lands to help Hotels like Holm Farm to bring them at par with other international heritage properties.
The hotel has put up some temporary wooden tents, on its vast property which have poor quality beds and a very basic bathroom. The TV in the room is of 1990, your eyes strain.
The reception sleeps by 11.30pm, the whole property goes dark as they switch of the lights. I was living in the wooden tent and had to reach the place in the dark, navigating through the greens supported by mobiles screen light. FOOD is just basic, no elaborate breakfast.
Owned by an interesting owner Himanshu with a family history, but looks like there is not enough revenue coming in as tourists don't come in hordes as they earlier would to Ranikhet, so its a Dying story to avoid.
Food is available at reasonable price and of good quality but need to order before to get is ready.
Ranikhet is almost 3 km down from this point. You can view all over hills and surroundings from its top.
One has to go and see this destination.
