Waterscapes - this exotic backwater resort, on the shores of Vembanad Lake is located inside the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, which draws migratory birds from as far away as Siberia. The only resort in the destination located inside the bird sanctuary and is noted for its independent huts that stand on stilts and is a place teeming with mangrove vegetation. It offers its guests uninterrupted access to the backwater life of Kumarakom. It is also an interesting location for eco tourists who are interested in mangrove ecosystem, birds related ecosystem. The property is part of the original Kavanattinkara estate once owned by Alfred George Baker. It is also widely popular among the "honeymooners".

I am writing this review after my second visit to waterscapes, a destination that has stood the test of time and continues to be one of our family favourite to chill out during a long weekend. For the benefit of prospective travellers, writing a little exhaustive review. Location: The property is located in Kumarakom amidst lush greenery and right on the edge of the huge Vembanad lake. Get down at Kottayam station and take an auto (roughly Rs 450 to 500) or Cab. This property is about 18kms from Kottayam. Can be accessed easily from Cochin Airport too. Tip: Preferable to make your reservations upfront so that you can request for rooms of your choice ( like close to the waterfront or right over the canal). The staff at the front-desk are very helpful and will do their best to accommodate. Best Time for Travel: Year round, though Dec to March is supposedly the most pleasant in terms of weather. For the avian enthusiasts, do plan your travel between Feb and June as this is the breeding season (more about the bird sanctuary below). Rooms: The are different types of rooms predominantly classified based on their location (proximity to the lake - its waterscapes after all :)). The facilities inside the rooms are more are less similar otherwise (do confirm with front desk though). The room types are superior lake view (on the edge of the waterfront) - 4 rooms in this category, Lake view (slightly father away opposite to the swimming pool) - 5 rooms and canal view (many rooms) which are slightly further away. Some are located right atop small canals running through the property. All amenities and comforts of a star class hotel are provided in the room. Please note that all rooms are built on top of stilts requires climbing a few steps. Tip: As part of the package (room booking) they offer complementary breakfast and evening snacks and tea Restaurant: The food offered by the restaurant is multi-cuisine and pretty good. Mix of local fares while also catering to other types like north, continental et al. The restaurant manager was particularly a great host. For the hardcore veggies, it was great to know that they do have separate partition and utensils within the kitchen to prepare Veg and Non-veg stuff. The breakfast is sumptuous while the lunch and dinner were bit more simpler in terms of the spread but still still quite good. The food was not only tasty but friendly to the tummy too. The best part was that they don't charge anything for the kids (hats off). Staff: All the staff are courteous right from the front-desk, restaurant to room service. Things to do: Sit on the verandah of your room and enjoy the nature (what else are we here for esp. if you hail from one of those concrete jungles). Go for boating in Vembanad lake. There are both 1 hour and 2 hour rides available and operated by KTDC itself. The 1 hour ride takes you through the villages and the lake while the 2 hour ride adds a nearby island to the itinerary (we just took the 1 hour ride during both our visits). Take a dip in the pool to beat the scorching heat and relax. There is also a kids pool for the tiny tots. There are pedal boats available near the reception and restaurant. Its DIY and quite enjoyable too. Take a walk inside the bird sanctuary. This is the most interesting part esp. for the birding community. Its about 2 kms walk inside the bird sanctuary to reach the watch tower but the effort is worth it. Different species of Storks, Cranes, ducks and other waterbirds can be spotted here esp during the season (please use the 2nd watch tower only as the first one was dysfunctional when we visited). Enroute we also got to spot bee eaters, drongo, kingfishers, butterflies and dragonflies in all colours and hues and a huge monitor lizard which scared the wits out of my better half :). The trek is definitely worth it. Tip: I also get to understand that you can book a 1 hour boat ride for a round trip to the sanctuary. They will drop you off at a point closer to the watch tower and bring you back to the resort (check with the front desk). For the more adventurous there are also country boats available midway through your trek to the tower. You can bargain for a round trip or take them on your return to sooth your weary legs. Charges are between 300 (one way) to 500 (return). Please carry water with you and remember there are no toilet facilities inside the sanctuary. Also advisable to wear a coat of mosquito repellent. If you are carrying plastic bottles please drop them off only in the bins which are provided inside the sanctuary. There are also limited number of indoor and outdoor games (like badminton, Chess, Carrom et al) available at the front desk. We have also seen hammocks tied to the stilts once but never bothered to enquire. Ayurvedic Massage by Shanthigiri - Had availed their service during the first trip and it was pretty good. However, this time around it was under renovation. Do try it if it is operational. Final words, there are quite a few high end resorts around but this was one place that provides almost similar facilities at a much pocket friendlier rates. It is a holiday that one wouldn't regret esp. for those green panthers whose heart stays close the mother nature. A trip that would not only recharge your batteries but would also leave you craving for more.

We happened to plan this trip on our way to a Wedding at Panthalam and was the plan worth it, It definitely was!!! We have always liked the service provided at KTDC resorts and Waterscapes KTDC, Kumarakom seemed like a safe bet as we were travelling from Kochi. On a trip like this what can be better than relaxing next to the longest Lake (Vembanad Lake) in India. We reached the resort on 10th May. The moment we entered the premises it felt like we jumped into nature's lap leaving the city behind us. We were greeted at the reception by the Manager Mr. Sarath, who escorted us to our cottages and described to us briefly about the features and facilities of the resort. For lunch we were asked to have from the buffet as ala carte was not available. Buffet was average and did not exceed our expectations. Tea and Coffee with Pazhampooris (Banana Fritters) was the perfect evening snack as we watched the sunset. For dinner we requested the Chef to prepare items that we selected from their ala carte menu. Prawns biryani and Karimeen Pollichathu were just amazing. Do try!! The next day we had breakfast from the buffet and were not disappointed, as each item in the buffet was lip smacking while being healthy. My family had the best of time here. We loved the architecture around this exotic resort, the staff at the reception who were attentive to our needs, the restaurant staff who were very courteous, the cottages which were very neatly set with all the amenities and the property which was well maintained. We were happy with the service that KTDC Waterscapes provided and hope to visit this place more often. The next day as we were checking out Mr. Sarath presented us with a family portrait with the four of us in the frame. Thankyou so much for that lovely gesture and for the fond memories. Thankyou Waterscapes KTDC. We recommend this place for your Next Vacation!!!!

We had a brilliant cottage - facing the backwaters. Couldn't have asked for a better room , right next to the restaurant !! The staff were polite (something that seems to be the case across all KTDC properties in the state) and helpful. We had the buffets most of the time - which was tasty, but the really good food is in the a-la-carte menu. We had the duck and fish curry, as well as the mixed fried rixe - all of which were excellent. The highlight of the stay were the paddle boat rides, and motor boat rides right from the hotel. We saw sights which we will not forget in a hurry. The rooms have the facility to connect your own youtube service to the TV, which is great for kids. Highly recommended.

Perfect location. The resort is right by the lake. The staff is honest, friendly and very responsive to any requests you have. The food was amazing! The resort has many facilities like health gym, infinity pool with beautiful lake views, buggy to roam the property, peddle boats, bird scantuary access from within the resort. We saw the beautiful sunset from the swimming pool. We had the lake view room and it was a very different experience like staying in a cottage with views of lake. They also have a superior lake view room which has unobstructed lake views. Other types of rooms are canal view and garden view which are equally good. If you are a family or group of friends or a couple, this is the best resort in the area! Must visit!
