An excellent home stay in Aymanam with beautiful river view. Sitting the long veranda with a beautiful countryside view watching the flowing river is a very relaxing experience. Added attraction is the very helpful couple Kurian and Soni who run the homestay. Soni is an excellent cook and served us delicious Kerala Karimeen fry, traditional Kottayam fish curry and sumptuous break fast, lunch and dinner. They are ready to take care of your every need. Thank you Soni and Kurian.

Thank you to Subin & family, the houseboat staff and chef for the amazing travel through Kumarakom backwaters and Vembanad lake. We had a very, quiet scenic and amazing boat trip with family. The food which was served on the houseboat was authentic and delicious traditional Kerala foods. It was an exciting and enjoyable experience for us coming from South Africa.

We enjoyed the stay with all facilities in this calm and scenic traditional house. The service was excellent. Home cooked food was the specialty with natural taste. Hats off to Kuryan and Sony . Highly recommended.

Enjoyed the house boat tour and the beautiful scenery. We enjoyed a delicious Kerala feast with freshly prepared food on the house boat tour. The staff was friendly and accommodating and the facilities at the resort were neat and comfortable. Definitely recommend for those looking for an affordable and enjoyable experience.

Please avoid unless you are looking for a cheap place to spend a night.
I am suprised to see good ratings for this place.
Please note it is not a resort. It is in extremely remote area. It has only 4 to 6 rooms and a dine out area. The backwater there stinks.

I stayed with my wife at Backwater Retreat- The theme House between Kumarakom and Aymanam near Kottayam, The mansion was splendidly located on the banks of rivers away from the noisy crowd. It was actually a deliverance from my monotonous and busy schedule of life. I reserved my Ac suite through hotels. The food was reasonably good and was prepared in tune with our tastes when the cheff was instructed to do so.
But the Natural background and the silence of the place were fantastic. You feel that you are cut off from the rest of the world. You dont have the experience of a hotel, but the loveliness of a home.
And even the kitchen is at our disposal. Really recommendable for couples and small families. They also arranged pickup and drop at Kottayam.

I'm shocked that people have given this place brilliant reviews. I'm not a "5 star" kind of traveler and usually look for off beat quaint places. With this in mind I chose Backwater retreat.
On arrival, the place was uninhabitable and the service was terrible. We arrived on a blistering hot day, and they didn't even have cold water or ice or any cold drink listed on their menu.
The room stank and they didn't even bother to turn the a/c on before our arrival to cool it down.
The ambiance was morose and depressing and the kitchen was infested with roaches and bugs. We couldn't even stay there a few hours and had to find alternative accommodation on an urgent basis. and this was meant to be our honeymoon. The owner Kurian, promised to refund our payment, but we haven't got anything back as yet.
Total scam!!

Thank you very much for your review and I was expecting this from you. We do not have liquor permit. You were asking for alcohol and we did not able to serve you. We arranged an auto for you to go a bar hotel and after you came back you were misbehaved to our staff which we could not tolerate..... Best regards.

I had booked in this resort through Travelguru as part of my Kerala trip. My stay in this hotel was the worst experience in the whole trip. This resort is about 15 kms from Kumarakom. The resort is very poorly managed. There is only 1 person who does everything (cooking, cleaning, serving, luggage transfer etc). Food is really baaaaad. there are hardly any activities to do. instead of this one can consider Lakshmi resorts in Kumarakom. We went there for north Indian food and found the place much more reasonable and better located. Light bulbs at few places were not working and on complaining they said they will replace and they never did. AC was not working properly.
This could be a good place for people who are looking for a place to just relax in a rustic setting and if you are not too worried about food quality and activities. There is a spice garden next to the resort which is quite nice.

I wanted to visit Aymanam because of my love for the book The God of Small Things, which is set in this town. I read reviews of Backwater Retreat and took a chance. What a wonderful decision that was! The house is gorgeous and unusual (made of beautiful timber---not common in Kerala and from an earlier time). The owner and staff will go out of their way to make your stay a pleasant one. Room was comfortable. Food was delicious. And the setting...divine. Sit on the veranda and relax as you listen to the sound of birds, peddlers in canoes calling out their wares, and the temple in the distance. If you want a TRUE India experience---this is a place to come. I wish I had planned for longer. Absolute tranquility.
As a woman alone, I can also say I felt very safe and well taken care of. Of all the places I visited in India this trip, this is the one I have vowed to bring my husband to next time we return.

I would first give thanks to Jesus for His grace and love. We had excellent and memorable experiences during our stay in house boat. We started from Alleppey, halted at Kumarakom and returned Alleppey in the morning. Staff, Food, & Service was excellent, Mr. Kurian was in touch from the begin to the end of the stay taking care of our needs. Lunch, Snacks, Dinner, and Breakfast all were excellent. Had good time spent chatting with our boat crew knowing the place and life style of people. Also they became one among us and helped us in fishing during evening halt. By God's grace we caught 4 medium size fishes which were added to our dinner. During our return next day morning it rained for about an hour, being in midst of the lake viewing the fishermen at work was awesome experience as my Spirit was refreshed with all episodes of Jesus and His disciples, their journeys in the sea of Galilee...
My sincere advice to management is to continue the spirit, keep the boat clean with hygiene and aesthetic.
May the Lord Jesus shall bless you all.
