A real authentic 15th century B&B offering a relaxing stay. Situated right next to one of the historical gates of this small medieval town. The rooms are very cosy and spacious. The tasteful breakfast is served by Jangui, the wonderful host who has many stories to tell. An excellent choice for short break in beautiful and peaceful Burgundy.

We stayed at La Porte Guillier in May of 2015 for 6 nights. There are three rooms at the B&B. We stayed in the chambre de la Porte, the best room with the nicest view. We were surprised at how large the bedroom, sitting area and bathroom was. The furnishings were great and we loved the four poster bed. Jongui made us feel welcome and prepered a nice breakfast every morning with great coffee, baguettes and croissants form a nearby bakery and his wonderful homemade bread. He was very helpful with advising places to visit and even arranged a bike rental for us along the canal which was lovely. The town of Semur-en-Auxios is spectacularly beautiful and is in a great location to visit the wine region of Burgundy, Beaunne, Dijon, Flavigny, and near some lovely hiking and beautiful countryside and small villages. The town people in Semur spoke little English for the most part, but were very friendly. The town has everything you need, some great restaurants, coffee shops, a charming cheese shop and two bakeries, and a very well stocked enotech for wine. Highly recommended.

The value for money is not good at all. The work is not finished, enters through a courtyard cluttered with materials,
There is really no place to relax or isolate yourself outside the bedroom.
Attentions (kettle, coffee maker, bottle of water are absent). Minimum products in the bathroom, no tissues either.

No TV,

You should not arrive before 6 p.m., it is late when you have been traveling since the morning.

Breakfast is ok
For 145€ (no bank card) we hoped for better. It's a bit rudimentary. Certainly the building is old... that attracted us but we let ourselves be fooled by the photos which do not show the entire place.
This room is worth no more than €90 with breakfast

For information:
The hotel opposite is the same price… with all the services!
And in Saulieu the small 3-star hotel (with swimming pool!) has rooms for 120€! It will be for next time

We stayed 3 nights, and although the host is friendly and sociable, not much assistance is offered otherwise. He wasn't around when we arrived in the late afternoon, and after we phoned he told us that he'd be at the residence at 6 pm. The entrance door is marked by a small brass name tag several inches long, look carefully for the door. Parking is in the street outside, limited to 1 1/2 hours during the day. It's a tortuous and exhausting journey to the rooms, don't bring much luggage. And if you are over 5 ft tall you'll be knocking your head on the low doorway, wear a hat as a buffer. Breakfasts are befitting of a monk....., juice, jam, bread and coffee. Ask for milk.
The location is central, but more than one day in Semur is pushing it, and next time I'd stay in Beaune. PS My wife's comments upon reading this are "she thought the room was very spacious and comfortable, the town is medieval, cute and easily walkable. The restaurants were excellent and we had an enjoyable time in the area".

My mother and I recently spent 2 nights at La Porte Guillier and it was absolutely charming. The property is perfectly located and has been lovingly restored to bring back all the original architectural details while effortlessly remaining modern and fresh. Our room had high ceilings and lots of light streaming in through the huge windows (with shutters so we could choose to sleep in if we wanted), a lovely bathroom with thermostatic shower, and a comfortable sitting area. Breakfast was très français in its simplicity and deliciousness, and the owner was incredibly warm and kind. We know Semur-en-Auxois very well, so we chatted with him about all its changes over the years, new restaurants and shops, new things to see, and of course all the lovely things that remain the same, like his spectacular view over the cobblestoned pedestrian area.

We know Semur so well because we own a vacation rental in town, and we stayed at La Porte Guillier instead of our gîte because we needed to visit when our own house was booked. I am so glad we did. I often get requests from people who just want to stay a few nights (our summer minimum is a week) and are looking for a hotel in town, and I had always felt that there were many good choices but no clear favorite.

Well, not anymore. If you're coming to Semur-en-Auxois for a few days, stay here. Book early, because there are only 3 rooms in this chambre d'hotes. It's the best combination of location, amenities and value out of all the hotels and B&Bs I know of in Semur. And I know Semur. This is a special place!

This beautiful old gatehouse has been converted with twenty-first century wit and style. We spent two comfortable nights here and were delighted both with the accommodation and with the welcome extended by our host, Jangui Motz who kindly provided breakfast by an open wood fire against the chill of the morning! If you are travelling in this region I would wholeheartedly recommend this location.

My wife and I spent 5 nights at La Porte Guillier early in June in this delightful historic B&B in the heart of the medieval town of Semur en Auxois which is an ideal centre for exploring the northern region of the Burgundy region. The B&B combines a tasteful restoration of an old building, excellent room facilities and a generous continental breakfast a highlight of which was Janui's homemade nut and almond cake. The warm welcome and advice we received from our host Jangui made for a very enjoyable stay and we certainly would recommend La Porte Guilier to other visitors looking for somewhere to stay with character. Our bedroom, le Buffon, overlooked the central square of Semur with all its interesting life and activities. However, the potential downside is that the cafe below sets out its tables quite early in the morning so anyone who is sensitive to noise in the morning should choose one of the other bedrooms.

Our two days in Semur-en-Auxois were the highlight of a two-week trip in France. The "city" is a charming remnant of medieval times, and is superbly complemented by La Porte Guillier. The B&B occupies the guard tower set into the old city wall, and has been nicely remodeled by the owner to provide pleasant and comfortable accommodations true to the local style. Jangui was a delightful host who willingly shared his knowledge of local history, restaurants, and things to do. After discovering that we could converse quite well using a combination of our high school French (from the 60s) and Jangui's English, we had some very enjoyable talks, which included a tour of some of Jangui's restoration projects. With the exception of our visit to the Information office, all of our conversations for two days were mostly in French, but don't let that deter you. Everyone we encountered was friendly and helpful. Free parking is available in the municipal lot only a block away, or for short durations on the street in the blue spaces. Pick up a brochure in English for the walking tour of the town, and explore the local countryside, dotted with quaint villages that are not very used to tourists. The local food and wine were superb.

We had a lovely room overlooking the rooftops of the beautiful town of Semur-en-Auxois. Jangui is a welcoming host and we truly enjoyed our stay. You really don't get more picture perfect than Semur. We especially loved the river-side picnic lunch we put together with food and wine bought at some of the local shops.
