Shimoni is an old fishing (and slave trading) village , remote, secluded and peaceful , 15 km of dirt road off the main sealed highway, 90 km from Mombasa, just on the border with Tanzania. The hotel is situated at the end of the village - so you get to experience the real Africa, but without the beach boys! It’s... More

This is not for those that want to party hard, but it is the most relaxing laid back beautiful place to unwind. The rooms are really comfortable and spacious. The staff were amazing, especially Sammy, they couldn't do enough for me, and I had a wonderful stay. Would highly recommend it as a great base, if you want to experience... More

We booked the Coral House via airbnb and only found out late that this was actually part of the Shimoni Reef Lodge. The Shimoni Reef Lodge is old and a bit run down. I think the owners know this and just use it as their own home, still trying to make good money out of it. The Coral house itself... More

We are really glad to know that you had an amazing time at our lodge. It is a privilege to have had you on board to enjoy our excellent dishes prepared by our chef (Pambo), and also to have taken advantage of the magnificent surroundings. The Kisite Marine Park is indeed one of a kind with intriguing activities such as... More

We had almost a week at the lodge and after the first night in a cottage were moved to "upstairs" which has an incredible view of the bay, harbour and Wasini Island. No, it's not a flashy resort, but the staff and ambience more than make up for the glitz and bling. Sammy was incredible and there are few other... More

RESORT PRICING – BUT FAR FROM RESORT QUALITY!! Yes, the location is beautiful & the local Kenyan staff just lovely. But from there on in….it is all downhill. The huge pricing by Kenyan pricing deserves QUALITY RESORT style hoteling. But no. The property is run down & tired everywhere – in a sad state of decline. Rooms are sparse. Water... More

We stayed one night and wished we had booked for longer the rooms are dated but functional but this was outweighed by the welcome we received and the excellent service from Sammy and his team On arrival we were introduced to the chef who asked if there was anything we didn't like to eat, and suggested we had the seafood... First & foremost I'm not a traveler who usually cribs about service, food or rooms ( there is always little plus or minus but overall experience should be great ) We were 6 couples arrived to Shimoni Reef Lodge. Practically we need to be allocated 6 rooms, however lady manager at lodge was forcing one couple to shift to some... More

Our family of five, children 11,16 and 18, had a great time at Shimoni Reef Lodge. Great staff, great food and fun activities. We went snorkeling and fishing but also loved the pool and just to hang around. The new years dinner and the local band were just fantastic and added to a great experience!

We spent 4 days at this little hotel at the south border of Kenia. As we wanted to dive, we looked in the region for a hotel that has contacts with a dive club. Shimoni Reef Lodge is the place to be. It has a superb view, lays on the Shimoni Chanel with a little terrace near the sea and... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Shimoni is full of amazing experiences……. For 20 years we have served sport fisherman, scuba divers, snorkelers, dhow trippers, honeymooners and friends to explore, discover and feel the Kenya of Old, where time has mercifully stood still, and the masses have not taken over. Now, we also offer unique accommodation, just 6 spacious comfortable cottages, a roof top suite overlooking the Wasini channel, and a residential house for visitors who prefer to do some self catering. There is also a pool, a spa service, and at our bar and restaurant, a revitalized exciting menu for our guests who just want to relax and enjoy the privacy that Shimoni is special for. ... more   less

“TRAVEL TIPS: • order your seafood in advance – the local lobster is great – and enjoy eating it watching the sunset on the terrace overlooking the channel. • allow some time just to walk around and see the real Africa . The village is a delight, and the slave cave / conservation area is interesting. • diving and snorkelling in the marine park – the hotel does not have a boat or dive school but works with dive schools in Shimoni/ Wasini Island – so you need to book your dive/boat trip in advance. They will even arrange for you to be dropped off in front of the hotel so you can avoid the walk back to the hotel from the pier.”

“In case you are with a large group the bungalow is a good idea. In case you want to have it romantic ask for the honeymoon suite with the stunning view but the cottages are certainly very good and all are steps away form the pool and the main building.”
