Since the days of resident owners Mrs Webster and Miss Innis the hotel has lost some ground is in relation to the reception staff, who are not always welcoming or friendly. Smiles and an attempt at rapport building would help. Breakfast is included with a continental buffet now added and cooked items being made to order. The more mature local ladies who used to work here have now retired and that is a huge loss to the hotel, though one lady in her late 40s or early 50s was incredible. I ate dinner in the bistro on my first night and that lacked quality in regard to the quality of the hamburger meat. I would have given a five star rating where it not for these two areas.
Nevertheless, this made for a pleasant three night stay and made a wonderful central location for both Oban and the area towards Glencoe and Fort William.
One thing that did particularly impress me was the fact that there must be communication between the dining room and the cleaning staff as rooms tend to be serviced whilst guests are taking breakfast. I liked that.
The Falls of Lora is located about 5 miles outside of Oban and overlooks the loch and the mountains. There is ample parking and it boasts a variety of rooms, ranging in size and price from a single cabin room to spacious luxury ones. Over the years I have stayed in many of them but now tend to favour the comfort of the more specialist ones. There is also a Bistro and bar, which has recently been refurbished and which still enjoys an open fire in the middle of the space. The new design is an excellent balance between being modern whilst still retaining the charm and character of the past.
Room 35 is a split level room that has a small balcony overlooking the gardens and the loch. It has a very large bed that has a lot of character and the room is spacious and attractively furnished. The bathroom is on the lower level and benefits from a large corner tub with a separate stand alone shower cubicle. There is ample storage space.
Breakfast is included in all rates and there is a cold buffet and hot dishes are individually prepared and served. All food items were fresh and the staff were warm and friendly.
The Bistro is greatly improved and as well as the a ’la carte menu there is a weekly special that is very good value. There is plenty of choice. All food items were fresh and generous and I was so impressed by the quality I decided to eat in for a 2nd evening.
There was a very high focus placed on Covid safety standards and all staff wore masks. I was particularly impressed to see the Bistro staff individually sanitising every page of the menu folders and it definitely made me feel safe and secure. The Bistro and bar staff were very friendly.
This is the only place I would stay in the Oban area and it is most definitely a hidden treasure. In the off season winter months the room rates are heavily discounted, making this a true bargain.
The experience was mostly good. All staff were very helpful and polite. I was given a room on the top floor with a good view to the water and Connell Bridge. The room itself was relatively small but contained everything you could need and had retained some traditional features. The furniture was heavy and dark but of good quality. I couldn't get the window open - I understand hotels don't want windows to open wide for safety but it would be good to be able to open it a little for ventilation. However, the radiator could be turned off so the room was not too hot.
The bed was super comfy. Unfortunately the duvet, though very good quality, was far too heavy for me and this meant I was too warm to sleep really well. However, the room was quiet and the road outside didn't really have any traffic on it till about 6am.
En-suite shower room was quite poky but was modern and clean. Shower was fine, not the most powerful, but adequate.
There was plenty of choice of food in the Bistro. It's the first time I've encountered Frickles on a menu. Interesting but I don't think I would order them myself. The foed was served quickly. It was pub food standard, but priced appropriately for the quality and quantities were certainly generous. A couple of open fires in the Bistro area helped with the atmosphere. We weren't drinking but the whisky bar looked tempting.
Breakfast has a restricted menu from 7.30 till 8.00, when the full range becomes available. In practice even the restricted menu had plenty of choice of cooked things if you needed to be away early, as we did. And it was served speedily and politely.
Overall, a decent hotel, good value and I would happily stay again. A tad quirky in decor and style but nothing you can't live with and embrace.
Stayed in a small double with loch views (49) which was clean and comfortable with a reasonable amount of off road parking on arrival.
Good free Wi-fi for dealing with customer emails etc and desk to work at.
Food at dinner and breakfast was great but want really made the stay was the wonderfully friendly staff who were all brilliant.
Obviously times are a bit different currently so lots of hand sanitiser around the place, allocated times to eat and details provided for contact tracing...felt very safe.
Beautiful part of the world and if you head for the railway station or the road leading to the Connel bridge you can pick up a cycle path that runs to and from Oban.
Cosy on arrival meal booked no problem.
Meal was lovely, presented well and enjoyable,
Fair price.
Room as described small and no real view, bed comfy and clean en-suite Would benefit from a tad more space.
The sitting room with gas fire is lovely we sat there rather than the room and was able to work and relax easily.
But you can’t rate the fellow residents
Unfortunately for us the chap above fell sleep with his TV on, we gave him the benefit of the doubt till midnight but then I was going into sleep exhaustion so had to go to reception to try and wake him.
The lovely night porter tried his best but no amount of gentle knocking was gonna wake this chap so I ended up in the lounge on a sofa until 4 when my partner message to say tv was off.
How do I know it was a chap …
Because at 5.30 he got up showered, used the toilet and enjoyed good morning Britain from 6.00 thrown in with some obviously male singing ….
Definitely a sense of humour needed.
and wen reported to the receptionist on checking out she couldn’t apologise enough but what more could they do in a fully booked establishment.
She kindly deducted monies off the room but in fact it wasn’t there fault and in trying to wake the resident we would have probably woken the whole floor.
Breakfast good quality, excellent service no complaints.
Totally a bad luck night and hasn’t changed my mind on the hotel review 4/5
We ate in the restaurant our second night and were wishing we had eaten both nights. Great menu at great prices. Staff were very attentive and nothing was a problem for them. I had the fillet steak served with rice in a creamy sauce and it was superb. Husband had the haddock and chips and everything down to the tartare sauce was homemade.
When checking out, we spoke with the manager who explained that they have done a lot of refurbishment to the hotel and still have lots planned, we had asked where we could get a ‘proper’ coffee for our journey home and she went to the trouble of making some for us.
We will definitely be back and hope that through their changes, they don’t lose their charm. A true gem.
But, a number of issues that just don't sit right when you spend £260+ on a one night stay.
Firstly, although the room was big (room 43 with a sort of 4 poster bed) and had a great view over the sea loch and towards the bridge, it was tired and dated. However, the main issue was the enormous bath (image attached) which had a shower attachment, but there was no separate shower and so you had to kneel in the bath and use one hand to operate/direct the shower head while you washed, or you could shower each other as we ended up doing!1 Not really a great bathroom experience in the 21st century. Funny thing is the bathroom is huge and you could have a massive walk on shower area instead. Given the size of the bath it would have taken ages to fill if you'd gone down that route.
In the morning the hot breakfast arrived at our table - not very hot at all. That was quite disappointing, especially as we'd hoped to end on a high after a very poor nights sleep. It is advertised as a HOT breakfast and not getting these small but important things right just spoils the experience completely.
At 2am, for 30 minutes, a small group of people had gathered outside the front of the hotel, beneath our room. They were very noisy and a car was there too playing very loud music. They eventually dispersed of their own accord once a taxi arrived for some of them, but it completely ruined our sleep, after a very long and tiring day for us. I have NOT taken this into account in my rating as it wasn't really in the control of the hotel...... or was it?
Unfortunately, we won't stay here again..... and it's only the food we enjoyed that stopped me rating the stay as 'Poor'.
I hope to come back and stay again in better times.
Many thanks.
