We are leaving the hotel tomorrow. I was a bit worried about coming here after reading the bad reviews, but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised.
The hotel grounds are very nice and it is right on the beach. They provide sunbeds and umbrella on the breach for free on your first day, and you will have the same beds for the rest of the stay. It means there is no fighting or blocking sunbeds and you don't have to get up early morning to find an available sunbed.
It is the same with the tables in the restaurant, which is allocated for you so you don't have to look for a table every time when you go for a meal.
The beach is really nice, where they also offer free kanoeing, which we used multiple times every day.
The room is small, but adequate, and the A/C is good. The only complaint I would have is there was a smell of drain in the room, which didn't get better over the 5 days we stayed here. Also the safe didn't work in the room.
The food is good, everyone should be able to find something to eat.
The AI drinks are quite limited,it doesn't include wine at the bar, even though there is white and red wine available at dinner. There is a fridge in the room, so you could buy your own drink if you wanted.
The evening entertainment is a hit and miss, some days might be good, others not so much. They focus on kids, which can be annoying for adults. Most people were elderly when we stayed here.
The pool towels only get changed once for free, and you have to go back to the reception to change it. It should be a place next to the pool to change it, and most people would change it at least once a day.
The staff is amazing and very helpful, even though there are limited staff members speaking English. They will go out of their way to make your stay memorable.
All in all we had a great time, and I would come back to the hotel again.

I have a bit of fear after to read the comments about the food. But we were really satisfied with them. There were many variety of fish and meat as well.
Only thing to improve maybe the breakfast..more salty taste.
The hotel, beach and swimming pool are very nice.
What I miss is the umbrellas at the swimming pool. Too much hot during day without shadows. Would be very important some umbrellas especially for the kids.

Some negative points that there is no drinking water or any drinks in the room. You need at least 2 bottle to fill them at the bar then take with you into the room.
The quality of the drinks are low. Juices are more water. The Aperol Spritz no good.
Except these negative things we were really satisfied with the hotel.
Very kind staff, beautiful beach and animations.

I would recommend to book the superior room or superior with sea view.
Calmer and smaller restaurants (same food) and you have your own table for the whole time that you stay at the hotel. Also own place at the beach.

The beach is fantastic. You find a bit of rocks when you enter into the beach but it's 2-3 steps then you arrive to the sand again 🙂

Note for the hotel:
Do a bit of improvement for the drinks and make a beach bar that the people should not walk up from the beach only to drink.

POSITIVES…
Spacious room
Big bed
We’ll decorated
Good food
Beautiful beach
Nice pool area
Helpful staff (Take google translate)
Designated table in restaurant
Nice little shop
Boat trips go from just along the beach; found the 4hour trip too long in a dingy
Nice music during the day, but gets loud at night (ironically in English) so ask for a room nearby reception area if want early nights

NEGATIVES…
My room, near reception too far from bar & beach, but quieter at night
Shower, not a power shower!
No English tv
99.9% Italian guests, so unless you speak Italian you’ll feel left out
Nowhere near main town of Cagliari, costs €130 each way and 1 hour to get there!
Entertainment all in Italian
€200 per week for front row sun-bed’s at the beach!
Too many beach sellers
No mushrooms or tomatoes, only meat, pastries and fruit for breakfast, no good for vegans
No poolside umbrella’s
No beach bar
Complex at a 45 degree slope, so if you have breathing or disabilities you’ll struggle.

Not near a 4 star experience. Food is average we ended up eating out at least once a day despite being on full board basis, rooms small and very dated, no WiFi nor up to date electric plugs, impossible to speak to management despite asking twice, sent also one email never had an answer. We also had to ask for a baby bath given without plug so not workable and no table on the little balcony so once we put our baby to bed we could sit on our chair and not even put a tablet or anything else, we had to ask for a table to be brought up and they did but weird this is not there as a basic service! For a so called family friendly hotel I didn't think it was great. Gym is there but 10 euros per entrance! Crazy. In comparison we are now in the north of Sardinia at a 4 star with same board basis and it is 200 euros less a week lovely food, free gym, WiFi included in the room, way bigger rooms and bathrooms... In any case I would not recommend this hotel to families or else.

A nice family hotel on a wonderful beach.

There are breach activities which can be booked like pedalo rent, boat trips,... But it's still quite quiet compared to other rather big resorts.

Also possible to do horseback riding and Quad tours not far away at Iba sa cresia.

Fisrt of all, I booked this hotel according the reviwes and also personal experience of my mum, who was there 2 years ago at the end of Sept.
Me and my future husband (aged 30) stayed here for a week from 28 August to 5 Sept.
It simply was a disaster. If you dont have kids with you or arent aged over 60, dont go there, you will get really bored.
The check in at the reception: little bit too complicated and slow, but overall OKAY. You have to pay a deposit for allmost everything - card for bars, towels..
We got the room in the upper side of the hill, room itself was clean and quite comfortable - double bed, safe, fridge.., but from the outside it would definetaly need a reconstruction- doesnt look like 4 stars. The view from the balcony was nice, over the sea, which was a little bit far to go..
But when you firstly came to the main restaurant Il Central, we were terrified. Everything is soooo crowded, you can hardly find a place to sit,
Choice of food- starters and salads okay, but always the same, then pasta, fish and meat, okay but not the best.
The second worst thing is the beach- not the beach itself, but the amount of umbrellas and sunbeds!! You lie 10 centimetres from other people, so we didnt use this part of "free beach cllub beach"- (they should call the hotel Full Beach instead :) and we went away, where it wasnt too crowded.
We had the information that during the high season, there is almost 1800 people ( count them adult, and like + 500 children from the age of 0 to 8, who are simply everywhere. ( Not that I dont like kids, but this was too much..
Before our arrival, about 300 seniors came and you can imagine how hungry and noisy they where. It was almost impossible to pick up some food.
If you dont have a superior - i do reccomend to book a table at a grilleria -for lunch and pizzeria-for dinner- its a restaurant in the garden. But dont forget you have to wait in the queue from about 8.30 to 9 to reserve it, than its full.
Overall, if it wasnt too crowded, it wouldnt be that bad, but we can see, that for the owner of this hotel the profit is the only to be interested in.
And its really overpriced compared to hotels in same category in Meditteranean sea. Free Beach club would definetaly deserve only three stars.
And you have to pay for everything in addition.

This was our second stay (our first was in August 2009). In the meantime, the Free Beach Club had gained a 4th star and hiked its prices -- while keeping service identical. So what was a good 3-star beach club has become an overpriced 4-star place. The location is great, the rest is mediocre.

The heavy rains and storms that hit much of Italy this summer avoided Costa Rei which enjoys a micro-climate created by the sea on the eastern side and the mountains on the western side. The temperature during our stay (mid to end July) was somewhat lower than in previous years which helped a Scandinavian like myself sleep without airco. The Caribbean style beach was as usual although had lost a couple of meters in depth due to sea action. Over the years the resort has changed little regarding the rooms (clean, fine at least 'superior' but bathrooms very basic), restaurants, theater, beach, shops or sports, A bit more has happened in the staff where (another) Roberto has taken the reigns of the village with Jacopo in charge of the entertainment. Both are easygoing and hardworking professionals in their jobs and supported by enthusiastic "animators" so lively atmosphere is guaranteed. Freebeach is a place for child families and groups of friends (we travelled with three other families from Brussels and Milan), elderly folks and those with an interest in sports (kayaks, wind surf lessons and tennis lessons included in price, others like sailing extra) and boat trips. Not for honeymooners or couples seeking privacy or romantic holidays.
Languagewise it is best to know the basics of Italian before going to Freebeach. The language capabilities of the staff in English let alone e.g: German are generally shaky although there are some exceptions.
As for restaurants and rooms I would strongly recommend superior treatment with access to the pole position in the Italian "beach hierarchy" (oh yes, the sun bed row seems to matter a lot...) access to the Moby Dick restaurant that is much, much nicer than the pretty sterile airconditioned central restaurant. By the way, they actually have very good wines (e,g. Rocca Rubia red) on a wine list in addition to the free but very average white and red table wines that one of the previous travellers complained about. What they don't but should do is to offer beer as an alternative to the table wines. The food is all Italian and good 4 star quality apart from the breakfast which is repetitive and only average for a Northern European that expects more non-sweet products than one type of cheese and ham and hard discounter muesli.
On the sports side Ivano, the tennis coach at the club, again amazed us with his enthusiasm in running the (free) lessons and tournaments. My both kids and myself attended his classes in the morning and the various tournaments (incl beach tennis) and I must say that Ivano is incredibly skilled (both technically and pedagogically) in getting both the children and us adults learning and doing even in 30 C heat. He is a major asset for Freebeach and I hope the director of the place has noticed that as much as we have.
Last point, Costa Rei has a beatiful beach but not much to see otherwise (towns etc) nearby so to discover the island you need either a rental car (or bike) or time to use the local busses that take you to other parts of Sardinia.
