The Birch would be very difficult to find, had my guide not taken me there; it is slightly outside Shangrila city, and a new highway is being constructed just outside it. It is owned by a Tibetan man called Nom, and staffed by a young Tibetan lady. The building itself is quite interesting, Tibetan style furnished by local bric-a-brac. The...

Only domestic flights and buses takes you there. Shangri-la or diqing airport is about 15-20mins drive to the birch. The birch is owned by a Tibetan family right in the middle of a typical village/farm. Weather was fantastic (august) but prepare rain gear as it is still towards the end of rain season. Lodging Don't expect 5 star hotel standards....

The Birch was a really fun place to stay. Its strengths are the fact that it is housed in a traditional Tibetan-style structure with massive logs as pillars in the front of the building. The accommodations were average and acceptable, not 5 star. But the real fun was being on the outskirts of the town ( a rough dirt road...

I booked this hotel directly through The Birch website. The owner Mr Nom quoted me the room rate much higher than Booking.com but was later reduce to be the same rate as Booking.com when I brought it to him. Mr Nom picked us up from the town. The Birch was way out from town. We got to drive through bad...
