We stayed for two nights and the accommodation was great. The rooms were a little small, but we were only there to sleep. We had a front room and found it a little noisy the first night due to the traffic driving on the cobblestone road. Bathroom facilities were good, everything was clean and comfortable. Fresh bottled drinking water was... More

Comfortable, fairly spacious rooms, heated beds for the cold winters, proper temperature control, and clean bathrooms. The staff was so friendly and inviting, and provided great service; we felt adequately cared for our whole stay. Joe and Carol, the owners were very friendly and we loved talking to them. They made us feel at home right away and treated us... More

Our family of 4 have come back to the Compass 3 times now. On this occasion at their new location: Number 50, Shang Ye Jie. If we didn't stay at the Compass previously, it would have been hard to believe that their first lodge, right in the middle of the Old Town was razed to the ground in January, 2014.... More

I stayed in Compass for 5 nights. It was a really comfortable stay with friendly English speaking staff. There are several types of rooms, which the staff would gladly show you before you decide. I like the loft units because they are on the top floor (third) and you can overlook the ancient town's temple and its large prayer wheel.... More

From the old Compass that has been burnt down to the new, Compass has always been the place that my family and I would stay whenever we visit Shangrila. The cosy ambience of the cafe, good food and comfortable stay makes it a place that even my kids look forward to every trip we make. Food is great with affordable... More

My girlfriend and I stayed at the lodge a couple of days, and it was really worth the money. The place has all the basic facilities that we needed as well. The Compass' cafe also served really awesome pizzas and beef curry. The staff was also really helpful in helping us to arrange for transport to nearby attractions. They should... More

room and bathroom are simple and function, put together in the most cost efficient way. hence the price is a good bargain. however, its located in a main street which is very noisy with sound of cars passing by, noise of wind through the window gaps. breakfast was included, which is a choose from the cafe menu and is yummy.... What a nice place to stay! The rooms are brand new, very clean with great beds and airconditioning/heating. Which was just what we needed as it was very cold when we where there. Would certainly recommend staying here. Staff is also very friendly and helpful.

What a treat it was to visit Shangri-la after the devastation of the fire last year. The businesses are working hard to restore the old city and are showing great progress. The Compass Cafe was a great place to hub from. The food has a wide variety of cuisines. The service in the cafe was a little slow for my... More

OK, what's there not to like? The location is great. Just a few minutes walk to the town square and Songzanlin Monastery. The owners/manager are multi-cultural - Singaporean, Indian, Dutch - who have been in Shangri-la for years. Excellent local knowledge but they also have a good understanding what the non-Chinese tourists want. Between the three of them, it's like... More
