Overall the hotel was nice, rooms were clean and personal was great.
However, I was very surprised finding out that air conditioner is not included in the price. We had to pay 5€ per day extra. Since in the high season they always have 32 degrees, of course everyone took AC, so it felt not fair that they make extra business on this.
Also, breakfast were identical every day and completely nothing warm (there were eggs and some sausages, but they were cold).

For rest & relaxation this is the place. What a little gem ! The Hotel Poseidon is located in a semi rural location at the end of the resort of Amoudara. The beaches & town centre are no more than a 5 minute walk away. Amoudara is a quiet resort & has suffered from the down turn in tourism. Amoudara consists of one main street containing a mixture of tavernas, retaurants, souvenier shops, supermarkets etc. There are plenty of tavernas along the beach which srtetches from Amoudara to Heraklion.Amoudara is resort mainly for couples & young families. Night life is sparse.

The hotel is a family run hotel & the front of house is a man called Nikos who is fluent in German & English. He is always available with information about local places of interest & is always keen for you to enjoy your holiday,The hotel is situated on 2 floors. There is no lift so if you have mobility problems, dont forget to ask for a ground floor room. The pool is located on the raised terrace located at the back of the hotel & up 2 flights of steps. The pool area & terrace are immaculate & from here you have a sea view & a panoramic view of the surrounding area. There are plenty of sun beds & there is a large shelter along one side of the pool if the sun is not your thing. Room 205 on the second floor overlooking the pool is where we stayed. For a low rated hotel this is the best room I have ever stayed in. The rooms are marble floored, spacious & exceptionally clean.Everything in the room worked & there were no exposed wires . The room contained a fridge & small kitchenette. The air con was efficient & quiet ( 5 euros per day charge. The shower was good & there was always plenty of hot water. There is a safe in the room & the key is provided at no extra cost. There was a small Grundig TV in the room which meant that we could watch some of the Olympics
We were on a half board basis & the food was plentiful & of a good quality. Breakfast is the same every day & consists of fresh bread ( no toast),ham, cheese, boiled eggs,tomato,peppers,jams/preserves,orange juice, water, tea & coffee. The evening meal differs each day and is a set menu. The food is home cooked making every day a suprise. The main meal is always accompanied by greek salad & a dip similar to tzatziki, along with fresh bread.Water is provided with the meal at no extra charge. Following this there is the sweet of the day, followed by water melon. If you smile nicely at Nikos he will also provide you with a gratis shot of raki to warm your heart. The service & atmosphere on the restaurant terrace at the front of the hotel is second to none. There is a nice breeze which blows across the terrace & makes dining a pleasure.
At the present time the hotel is mainly frequented by German tourists ( middle aged couples & young families). We met some lovely Greek,German & Dutch people at the hotel who were all polite, courteous & considerate.
So If you are after old fashioned Cretan hospitality, look no further. Give it a try.You will not be disappointed.

Super deal. Rooms were clean and cleaned every day. Staff was very friendly. The beach is about a 10 minutes walk away. Taxi, bus stop and car rental right in front of the hotel! Breakfast okay. There were ashtrays on the balcony, good for us smokers! All in all a great bargain!

Our family spend 2 nights at this family hotel, located at Ammoudara beach, aprox 5 km far from the centre of Heraklion. We paid 60 euros per night for 2 adults and 2 kids (4,5 and 6 y.o.) breakfast included (cheese, ham and green peppers, butter, jam, bread, canned orange juice and coffee, hot chocolate or tea). Our room was spacious with four single beds, a flat tv, a mini kitchen and mini fridge. Bathroom was clean, as the rest of the room. Towels and sheets were enough used. This hotel possess a nice swimming pool offering shade and sun beds.

The beach of Ammoudara is not the best of Crete, but you can stay at this decent hotel and explore the Town of Heraklion and it’s surroundings at a very reasonable price. A car would be very useful in order to visit the town with it’s Archeological Museum (under construction at this period, so you can visit only some exhibits for 4 euros), the Museum of Natural History (located by the sea, open until 14:30). Few minutes far from the centre, don’t miss the Palace of Knossos, a must to see. An other great site is the new Aquarium, about 10 km far from Heraklion, on the road to Agios Nikolaos. They did a great job, and you can have a snack, launch or dinner (very good quality at logical prices for a museum). If you have kids, or if you feel like, don't miss the water city water slides, few km far from the centre. You will find there lots of fun, restaurant, pizza, hot dog and fresh fruit salad. Please note that we visited the Water City, as another two parks with the same theme exist in Heraklion, but we haven't visit them, so I cannot advise.

Have fun at Heraklion. If you want to stay down town, you can read my review for Atrion Hotel ***, located in the Centre but at a double price for a family room, offering great breakfast.

We didn't actually pick this hotel originally, it was a substitute due to our hotel overbooking itself ....on purpose....common practice apparently grrr! Anyway, we weren't terribly excited to be given this hotel, as photos on web weren't particularly enticing, didn't really do it justice, however we were pleasantly surprised!

The pool area was much nicer than we'd expected, very clean, plenty of sun beds, great views etc. Rooms are basic, as expected but clean, sheets and towels changed regularly. Kitchen area minimal but we weren't planning on eating in. We had great balcony which was 'L' shaped, so that was a bonus. Nikos (& his brother) - Front of House were delightful, very hospitable, helpful, gave us maps, advice on things like buying cheaper bus tickets from supermarket down the road.

We went as a family, only thing against it perhaps is that it is very quiet, no music by pool, no entertainment etc so for a family, it is possibly too sleepy. Pool area generally very quiet which is of course also a bonus if just looking to totally switch off but our children did get a bit restless as there was no opportunity for them to make any friends etc.

The nearby beach was beautiful, lovely sun beds and great restaurant that sells the best pizzas! However sea is really rough! Shops, restaurants about 10/15 minute walk down the road, plenty of atmosphere along this strip.

Breakfast was good, offering cereals, bread/jam, salami, salad, multiple fruits and great coffee! Terrace where you eat is lovely.

Aqua Plus is well worth a visit, that was the highlight of our children's holiday and it was only half an hour drive away. We hired a car from down the road (make sure it has 'free kms' and is 'fully insured' we were told by Nikos).

In summary, we had a very pleasant stay at The Poseidon, really no negatives but for us, it was just a too quiet, I'd say more suitable for couples, older generation who are after a bit of peace and quiet.

This hotel was a lucky punch for us as we are not the regular all inclusive, mass tourism, party travelers.
The hotel is close to the beach (300-500) meters and just far enough to be in a quiet area. Though it doesn't provide a whole bunch of luxury, it provided all we needed. It is basic but clean the staff is very attentive and helpful. The Bus stop is right out front, although I suggest a walk to the nearby supermarket to get a ticket to the city and one back since it is less expensive this way. Hiraklion isn't a 15 min ride away, which is way worth plenty visits.
Outback of the hotel you will find a pool area.
During our stay in September it was predominantly visited by couples and folks who were planning their own activities outside the hotels that animate their guests all day.
If you seek information or tours of the island, you are provided with information at the front desk and are able to book some tours with local agencies at the front desk.
We had all we needed as were able to cook in our room which had a refrigerator and even air conditioning (separately available).
We highly recommended this hotel. For all who enjoy their freedom to plan each of their vacation days themselves.

The feedback here does not corespond with reality. Hotel is located about 1 kilometer from beach - it was a bad surprise. The WiFi was so slow that it was almost impossible to read an e-mail. Breakfasts were every morning same - almost no choice. Rooms were not much clean - it could be worse, but much better too. All bars and restaurants were more than 1 kilometer long. It was not a bad stay but it accordance with feedback here we waited much more.
