Awaken history in a Char-bagh where Mughal emperors once camped ! History has it that in the late 1500 AD important Mughals camped in this “char bagh” with a stunning chhattis-dari (36-pillared pavilion) at its heart. Its underground chamber, surrounded by water during the summer provided a cool resting place for the women. Later, as the conquering Maratha army marched towards Delhi, the Jadhavs took possession of this natural water catchment area. Sardar Deorao Bhausaheb Jadhav and his son Sardar Krishnarao Deorao Jadhav used this 'bagh' as a summer house with the ladies’ section in Deo Bagh and the mens’ section in Jai Vihar, the family's current home. The garden complex houses the most exquisite family temples, a ‘hathi khana’ for elephants, horse stables and cenotaphs. Important Gwalior State meetings, especially against the British – when the valiant Rani of Jhansi fought from the fort rampart close by, were held here during that time. After India’s independence, this has been the home of Sardar Deorao Krishnarao Jadhav, his son Sardar Dhananjayrao Deorao Jadhav and his wife the Ranisaheba, since 1954 when they left their ancestral Lakshmi Vilas Rajwada.

The beautiful architecture mingling with nature, the simplicity yet variety provided in the meals, the minimalist yet swanky rooms, the sparsely populated gardens, courteous staff everything provides for a peaceful and private affair with the family. We were travelling with a dog and there are only few hotels in India that allow dogs as well to stay and that too inside the room. One of the rooms, Janokji Mahal, here does allow you to stay with your pooch and provides a separate room with AC as well. The big garden, the greenery, huge area provided in the room for the dog not only won his heart but ours as well. The staff, Mr. Bisht, was courteous enough to even allow our dog inside the restaurant and dine with the family. Definitely visiting here again in future and recommending more peeps and pet parents. I am sorry Deo Bagh if some pets might create a nuisance in future, but then it’s just too perfect for pets and pet parents to ignore.

Visited Gwalior for a short getaway and stayed at Deo Bagh. Was a relaxing stay. Its a small property set in the midst of nature, beautiful lush garden and numerous birds. You see peacocks roaming around the gardens, sitting on the walls and dancing under the overcast sky. Its a Bird watchers delight. You wake up with the calls of the birds. The premises also has family temples and Baradari - gems hidden amidst the foliage. It is not far from the Gwalior fort and other important sights. The staff was very attentive and hospitable. Amar Upadhaya helped with our booking and ensured that we were well taken care of. From getting freshly plucked jamuns to delicious khasta kachoris with Kadhi made specially for us by Pramod Kumar, the chef, our requests were all met with a smile.
