If you are bored of the standard hotel rooms and services and seek a haveli style experience, this place fits the bill as there aren't too many other options in Gwalior. The old haveli has 3 rooms for guests and ours was in the ground floor. Mind you this room has a bathroom opposite to the room, which is not a problem execpt for the fact that the passage is used by guests staying on the upper floors. The staff was courteous but not very forthcoming about the history of the haveli nor knowledgeable with things to do in and around Gwalior. The room was comfortable though not very "haveli" in style! Food options were limited and continued to be spicy even after our feedback after the 1st meal.

Don't be mis-led by the name Dera Haveli Heritage homestay. This so called Hotel is situated in a residential- commercial congested centre of Gwalior, in a narrow lane. It doesn't have anything welcoming about it. Actually you get a depressing feeling as you enter the dark and narrow reception area. I had a booking for 15 and 16/11/2019. One day prior I wrote two emails to the hotel and also called up but no one picked the calls nor anyone called back.I Reached from Delhi around 1.40 pm and checked in. As it was lunch time I asked for the menu but was told that the restaurant was closed for lunch ( actually they don't have a restaurant, it's a small sit out). The waiter suggested that we could eat Maggi! Cheeky! That when the menu showed the lunch time till 2.30 pm. After some insistence the waiter agreed to get us daal chawal, which ultimately was served after 45 minutes. There are only three rooms in the hotel and too many haphazardly constructed stairs leading to the rooms which itself are constructed haphazardly. From the terrace you can see the narrow lanes and terraces of the residential areas surrounding the hotel. You also get a view of the Fort which actually is visible from any point of the city. The mixer in the bathroom was not working. One arm of the sofa was broken. The TV had only FTA channels. On my asking for a sports channels the same was provided. We were the only guests in the hotel. If you want water in the morning don't expect anyone to pick up the phone. The breakfast comes with your stay. Breakfast is available from 8 am to 10.30 Am and is to be ordered in advance. From the items.available in the menu I ordered breakfast but was told that Paratha will be available only after 9.30 AM. I was suggested a plain omelette which I agreed as there was no other option. The tea kettle was so dirty and had residues of earlier usage floating in it. Considering the shoddy services I decided to checkout early morning the Very next day thereby forfeiting my one days rent. Mr Abhimanyu, the Manager did not show up while checking out. I paid the entire amount for two days for one day stay in this hotel and checked in Clark's Inn and suites. Had a bad experience at the hotel. This I feel is the most badly managed hotel I have ever come across. To add to further misery after checking out I received a message that Dera Haveli had cancelled my booking! See the cheek! How can they cancel my booking! It was I who checked out from the hotel due to their shoddy management. This was one hotel stay I would like to forget. Please check-in at your own risk. This hotel doesn't tick any boxes. Avoid.

Dear Molly Tiwari, As the property manager of Dera Haveli homestay I would like to immediately clarify your false baseless accusations on us: 1. This is a HOMESTAY property not any 5 star Hotel. On all Internet booking sites there are enough photographs provided of the property to make a final choice before you choose to book our property. We had mailed you all the details through booking.com mailing inbox pls check again. If we missed your call due to being pre occupied we did have the courtesy to call you back at a better time. 2. The moment you checked in by 2:15 PM (as if you now own the place because you paid for the room attitude) you were very rude to our staff even when they welcomed you warmly with a smile. You ordered food at a time when the kitchen was just about to close (5 minutes before) and constantly kept pestering us, you want your food within 20 minutes even when we had informed you beforehand it will take a minimum 45 minutes. You even insulted and spoke rudely to the helper who served your food. That’s the reason Maggie was suggested to you by the staff because you didn’t show any patience. 3. We arranged our taxi and driver from our property directly for your local sightseeing and you go ahead and try to cut a deal directly with our driver and also instructing him not to inform us. We have never come across such a cheeky guest who think they can slyly rundown the hotel taxi driver and refuse to pay us our taxi charges. 4.This is a limited capacity based homestay property (rooms & staff) and everyone out here does their level best to take care of all guests in the highest order possible, But you kept constantly harassing the property staff for problems which never existed such as Hot water mixer was running perfectly fine when we checked and showed you, Kettle was clean just with some hot water droplets in it, all basic Hindi sports channels were coming on the TV in our standard TV pack as shown to you and provided for all. We were more than glad to cancel your booking out as we had already known your unkind intentions of coming here to only create a nuisance as a guest. I urge other hotels to avoid/beware of such ill mannered guests who come to create problems for owners purposely and than set up a negative impact about the property at fault. Mrs. Molly tiwari we will not be intimidated by your false allegation review and that’s the reason we choose to take a stand for our dedicated staff and give you our response. Thanks. Best Regards, Abhimanyu

You are in Gwalior so I am assuming you love history as a traveller. You are in Gwalior that means you are going to visit Jai Vilas Palace and Scindhia Museums. The enormity , vastness and grandeur of Schindhia family's royalty will make you speechless I am sure.Dera Haveli is none other Sardar Phalke's own Haveli and Sardar Phalke was none other than Schindhia's close confidant ,minister and chief commander. When you are staying here you are being part of the history. This haveli is enormous. A part of haveli is open for tourist as homestay. Let me come to the review part of the room and arrangements.Though it is an 150 years old haveli but it is equipped with all modern amenities. Rooms are big, spacious, very clean and well decorated. Wash rooms are spacious and clean You will get wifi ,tv,minibar, access to rooftop, your very own comfortable cozy area for dinner, breakfast or lunch in front of the room. You can relax in the vast rooftop as well where you have direct view of the Gwalior Fort. They will serve all your food in your rooms. Most important part is the behavior of the staffs. They will make you feel at home.Very courageous, cordial, always smiling and happy to serve you. I also love the taste of the foods.I would say staying here itself is a unique experience which would be part of your tour.

Battling the crowded streets of Gwalior one will reach this little Oasis of history. There is ample parking space and from the moment you get up the steep stairs you will notice that you have entered a living haveli which is alive with old memories which can be seen through the many pictures and collectables which adorn the walls. The rooms are spotlessly clean and so is the bathroom. The place seemed very safe and secure. I guess the top room on the terrace will be the best in winters. They also have 2 cheaper rooms on first level with common bathroom which should be a hit with backpackers as they are cheaper. They a have a lovely terrace which has a wonderful view of the fort on one side and many temples and other rooftops on the other. We enjoyed a tasty meal (mutton masala a must try) on the terrace and were lucky to catch Abhimanyu and his lovely wife who run this place. Abhimanyu, a smart energetic and well spoken lad left his job in the bigger city to come back to his roots and start this lovely homestay. He is extremely proud of his roots and the haveli. We wish Dera haveli and Abhimanyu all the best and we would positively return to spend more time here and explore Gwalior better.
