Ulisa Bay Lodge is set in a perfect location – the stuff that dreams are made of. Chalets overlook a perfect beach; they are attractive and homely with whitewashed walls, green tiled roofs and a balcony facing the lake. All rooms are decorated with 'chitenje' (Malawian-print cottons) curtains and bedding, giving a nice sense of local colour. Every chalet has...

We've just stayed here for a long weekend with a friend who lives in Malawi and a few others who we met on the Ilala ferry crossing. We quite simply had the most magical time. Chris is a great host and his staffing team managed by Trevor (such a cool cat) made every effort to ensure how stay was a...

I stayed at Ulisa Bay Lodge at the end of February 2017 and there was only one other person there for one of the four nights I stayed. I arrived on the north bound Ilala ferry at 6 am Saturday morning. I had already spoken to Chris the owner who had given me the managers number (Trevor). Trevor was so...

Go to Mango Drift. A much more interesting atmosphere. Too much concrete buildings, only rocky beach here. At Mango Drift, you 'll have a very relaxed place made only from natural materials. And the huts are directly on the sand.

We are truly thankful we are all different. Variety really is the spice of life. Ulisa Bay Lodge (UBL) is quite deliberately very different from Mango Drift. This gives guests the chance to choose where they prefer to stay. While this reviewer preferred Mango other reviewers have preferred UBL. The reviewer was with us on New Year’s Eve. In the...

There is not a lot to do on Likoma Island and Ulisa Bay Lodge makes no attempt to change that! If you are looking for excitement, entertainment or adventure you are in the wrong place. We only had two criticisms of Ulisa Bay; firstly the beach is not ideal for sitting on, the sand is very coarse and the gradient...

Many thanks for this review and we are already in the process of making some sun loungers. The issue of the TV we hope to solve by making some areas below the restaurant and right beside the lake and on the beach where drinks and meals can be served away from the noise of the Premiere League. Some guests actually...

The owner has a bond with the local community and that is one of the atractive things of the lodge. The beach gets full of people from the area, kids swimming every afternoon when they come from school, and that gives it a plus to the place because you get to meet people from the island without moving from the...

Many thanks for your very helpful review. We are happy to report that there is already one ”Summer Hut” on the beach and another is being made together with several sun loungers. As I advised another guest the issue of the TV we hope to solve by making some areas below the restaurant and right beside the lake and on...

I echo everything that stefandreas wrote about in his review - the wonderful way in which UBL is integrated with the village. I will add that our room was brilliantly clean and lovely! Staying at UBL and our experience in Likoma was the highlight of our trip to Malawi - we even added time to our stay. Most of all,...

Ulisa Bay is not the typical beach resort, with sunbeds and beach volleyball. In fact there is a nice little beach - but its not at all a resort beach but a nice village beach used by fishermen, children and animals alike. In fact the chalets are not fenced from the tiny village but merge with it - and that...
