I had visited Nainital during August at the peak of the monsoon along with my wife and two kids. Our stay was just for one night and we wanted to stay at a lake facing property close to the market. In our previous visit, we had stayed at KMVN Mallital which also offered panoramic views but was far from main market (you can go through my separate post on that). We had booked the property directly from hotel and we got some discount due to monsoon season. We had booked a super deluxe room at the first floor. The rates offered to us was only inclusive of taxes but excluded everything else.
 Firstly, this is a heritage property and as per the staff close to 150 years old. Hotel is right on the mall road and very close to the stadium market (a couple of 100 mtrs away). Given its proximity to the market makes to convenient to explore the place. It also has limited parking space available (my guess is that close to 10-12 cars can be parked) which otherwise is challenge with many properties on mall road.
 The rooms are old styled but well maintained. There is some restriction regarding availability of hot water. Room service is efficient.
 The restaurant in the hotel was also well maintained. The food was extremely good. Meals were cooked as it was homemade (neither spicy nor oily or overcooked). Even the rotis available were tawa roti and that too of atta (not maida). This is something to be appreciated.
 Common area was neat and tidy. They were lot of different types of blooming flowers pots all over the property. Outside the room, there were seating arrangement where you can enjoy the view. You can even have your meals there. Although it was on mall road, but I couldn’t feel any disturbance.
 Staff was cooperative although at the time of check out, close to 4-5 guys surrounded us expecting some tips. Management should check this trend.
Some of the complaints that I have was
 No tea/coffee maker available in the room
 No dental kit available in the bathroom.
 Rates not inclusive of breakfast
 Food menu was pricey.
At such price point and the competition around, it is advisable that these issues should be addressed. Overall, I would advise you to stay here if you want to have a magnificent view of the star attraction of this hill station i.e. the lake.

The Grand old Hotel of Nainital The old colonial vibe is still there managed by the owners themselves who are very courteous and friendly.
The staff is very friendly and helpful the stay was like that we were staying at our own home
The rooms are with all amenities and very spacious especially the suite rooms if you are traveling with kids they have a separate room for them.
You can sit in the lounge and look at the lake whole day long or have tea in the open area with a spectacular view of the lake
Overall a mesmerizing stay ...

I stayed here with my family for 4 nights.
Pros of this hotel -
1. Good location, right on the lake
2. Tasty food
3. Courteous and helpful staff
Improvements required -
1. Wifi is available only in the outer room. Please make it available in the bedroom as well.
2. Outer room is dusty, blankets in the bedroom can be cleaner
3. 24 hrs hot water supply will be appreciated

We chose hotel only because of location but the hotel was having renovation while the guests were staying completely breaching the privacy of guests through their ill-clad glass doors and ventilators. The food is useless and staff uncooperative, even the owners are inamicable and unreasonable. The parking is there but at your own risk as the staff carrying stuff left deep scratches all through my brand new fortuner. All in all a worst experience in life. So beware of all these false promotions and promises at Grand Hotel.

Visited this hotel for a night. Service was so poor . There was a mouse in the room . Even after telling them about it. They were not at all sorry as if they already knew about it. Very disappointed with the stay in grand hotel. I wouldn’t suggest any one to stay there. Despite of charging bomb for a night services are not worth it. @ grand hotel management you really need to look into it .

I stayed here with my family of 2 babies for 3 days and 2 nights. Overall, I'm satisfied with almost everything that this hotel had to offer. They provide parking space for you if you drive but it's very limited. Luckily, our driver managed to take care of our vehicle and kept on removing it for the others' convenience. The room was decorated with the vintage taste. The bathroom was really clean, the only thing was they don't provide warm water all the time. You have to request it from the receptionist if you need it. Warm water worked just fine in the morning. All rooms are facing the lake, but, taking the one level up gave you all the breezy view you need.

I definitely will be staying here again next time.

Hi All,

I have been visiting Naintial and this hotel for the last 15 years. I must have sayed at this hotel atleast 7-8 times and want to keep coming back to it. It is the best way to see, feel, experience this beautiful hill station. The pros and cons below :

Pros
1) The hotel is right in the middle on Mall road with a beautiful uninterrupted view of the lake and mountains on all sides. Its go easy to go anywhere from here.
2) The Hotel itself has an old world charm to it. Rooms with huge celings. We stayed at the suite (their biggest room). Good bathroom size. Excellent facilities (importantly heater) in the room. Nice huge dinining table and an LCD tv.
3) One can just spead time having tea and sitting in the balcony enjoying the view. Particularly in the evening. So so relaxing.
4) The food at the hotel is just perfect. Homely and delicious. You need to pre-order and give them the exact time to serve. I know this is an old concept but it works wondefully. Have to try the simple north indian dishes here
5) They have a nice small parking lot. Considereing its on mall road its very useful.
6) Most of the staff at the hotel have been here for a long time. Dedicate. I can recall most of them by face everytime I visit the hotel.
7) The quality of crowd here is usually good. I know of other hotels on mall road that cant boast of the same. I know a lot of ppl who stay at "top hotel brands" in various cities come here regularly (they all skip Manu M or Arif Castle etc)
8) Its not at all expensive. I just hope the mgmt just keeps it at this level

Cons
1) Dont expect a huge lobby or a spa or things like that

So when in Nainital do stay at this place. Cant have a more relaxing holiday. Dont even look at the so called 5 star hotels for which you need to go up hill.

Happy Travelling,
Gautam

I went to nainital with my family during may 2012, i selected the Grand Hotel after doing lot of research , I booked Grand hotel by transfering some advance amount in their account and told i will checkout in 7 am - 8am in the morning. I was happy that i booked a good hotel in reasonable amount.
when we reached around 7 am, i was shocked, the hotel management was rudely saying that the room will be available after 10 am, because of checkout time 10 am -10am. they told us to wait in lounge till 10 am. we were tired after the night journey and really frustrated after hotel management response was so bad...
I asked to return my advance payment back, then they were not listening, after some fight i got managed to take back my advance payment and left that hell.
I will recommend pls dont go to this worst place. these people dont care about the tourist, their behaviour is very rude because they are getting enough booking from some stupid peoples.

Response from TheGrandHotelNainita, Manager at Grand Hotel
Responded 18 May 2012
The Hotel's check out time is 10 am - as mentioned on our website and on the phone during our communication with the guest. In the event of a room being unoccupied, or the previous guest having checked out early, we extend the courtesy of an early check-in. Since both those options were not available, I'm sure it it will be understood that the Hotel could not possibly have thrown the current guest out at 7 am if the check out time is 10 am. Despite offering a lake-facing Lounge with attached restrooms and breakfast to the guest while the room was being readied, the guest seemed unwilling to see reason. The Hotel then decided to simply refund the advance money.

I have been to Nainital quite a number of times and have stayed there in almost all the hotels.it would not be right if I rate this hotel as one of the best, however I would categorize it as one of the best on the mall road. The rooms are big and spacious the toilets are really clean( which really matters to me). Food is a biggest worry in this hotel as they have fixed time to order and served in the dinning area only, also the quality does of food does not match with the image of the hotel but since the hotel is on the mall so you have many good eateries near the hotel.

Thank you for enjoying your stay with us. Being old fashioned, we encourage our guests to partake meals in our heritage dining room and we have found that it an experience enjoyed by most. Our food, of course, is homely and simple, and may not always be to the taste of those who enjoy more "hotel-like" food.
