My friends and I walked out of the noisy and rude Flaming Dragons in Pondicherry and landed up at Villa Helena last night. Strangely we sat at the same table we had sat on a couple of years ago (Everything has been stretched in time due to the pandemic) It brought back memories of a fabulous meal we had had, albeit poor service and a terribly long wait for the food. The latter we experienced again this time so if you want a fast meal forget coming here. They take their own time, looks like there is only one person cooking in the kitchen and maybe two courteous boys who are the waiters. Coming to the food, sorry to report it was totally lackluster and unimaginative. My prawn Thai curry came looking very nice with big big prawns. But they turned out to be totally tasteless. The prawn hatcheries on the East Coast Road seem to be supplying these restaurants in Pondicherry with large totally tasteless stuff. And the curry, sorry you need to go to Naturellement... the Garden Cafe in Auroville to know how to make it. This curry had more corn flour in it than anything else. My friend who had ordered the prawn salad with glass noodles had the same opinion. Chewy tasteless prawns that just should not be ordered by any restaurant. ( why not get fresh prawns even if they are smaller, from the local fish market?) The only friend on the table who did not complain about his food had ordered A simple daal rice because there was nothing else that was exciting for someone who is vegetarian and gluten free. The only thumbs up I would give were the potato wedges that we ordered twice over. After this disappointment no one wanted to even try to look at the dessert menu, and we prefer to walk over to the Gelato Factory next door. Villa Helena was totally disappointing. Such a nice place to sit out at, (even though the alleged hostess was on a table behind us smoking rings into the air with a couple of fellow smokers) but turned out to be a waste of time. Let’s stay with the time tested and vibrant Coromandel Cafe!

We visited the restaurant for the second time, to give it another go. The location is super. Nice, quiet and lovely. Food is bad and totally overpriced. Service is completely understaffed therefor everything is late and rushed and food was cold. We ate fish and all felt bad after. Have a coffee only...

We had an excellent time in the villa. The location is just awesome with all famous restaurants in touching distance and the beach within 5 mins walk. The rooms are old fashioned but would prefer to have the ones on the 1st floor.

A quaint heritage villa in the middle of white town and walking distance to the Promenade, Villa Helena is a really gorgeous place to stay when you are in Pondicherry. The rooms are large and comfortable, gives you a bit of royal feel as well as a homely environment, the hosts makes it a very warm stay. The breakfast has a French flavour with the restaurant giving you all that's required to make it a memorable stay. There's a public parking close to the villa that is really safe for your car. Plenty of restaurant options nearby.
