#24 of 229 hotels in Pondicherry
Only a French flirtation with India’s bewildering diversity could have produced the refined and elusive magic of ‘Pondicherry’ which contains the magic of the whole Orient in one name. Now, this French 18th-century coastal lifestyle in India is brought alive again in a home which is a virtual art gallery with etchings and hand written postcards all over its walls. Recreated in high-raftered ceilings with savonnerie rugs and easy chairs to lounge away the afternoons. Four poster beds – (one accessed by three stairs ! ) – to help you recreate your past with dreams. Savour a French mansion full of Indian warmth. Enjoy fine Creole eating where Tamil spices mix with subtle French under-statement to titillate the palates of gourmets.

This Dune Hotel definitely has the old world charm as advertised by them. The best part of my stay was the hospitality offered by the staff. Stalin, Kamesh and Murugan were excellent. Literally never said Can’t/No for any request no matter the time.

Lovely hotel in a great location, charming layout and has all the foundation to make it into a wonderful place. The staff is friendly, willing to please and service oriented. However there are many things that need attention, supervision and upgrades: -Bathrooms are very basic and some of them just not clean and upto the standards expected. Fixtures, WC, bathtub, shower curtain could use replacement -Rooms are large, though flooring was chipping in parts. A/C was barely able to keep up with the heat. Our metal 4 poster bed was lovely though held together by a 2"x4" wooded beam. -Breakfast was randomly served. On the 2nd day nothing was setup and we had to request for it - followed by slow service. Coffee was terrible and for this caliber one would expect something less bitter and at least drinkable -Property is showing a lot of wear & tear - basically it's been neglected by management and there did not seem to be any resident supervisor. -There are many other options that I would recommend for travelers at similar price point (or marginally higher) for a better experience -Property has huge potential and staff is trying their best - if management was to invest and pay attention, it can be in the Top 3 hotels in White Town

A beautiful heritage property which is unfortunately not well maintained by the management. - Broken chairs, leaking faucets & no in-room kettle/tea/coffee amenities (esp frustrating since kitchen service begins only at 7.30am) are just a few of the issues we faced. The hotel was extremely short staffed through the weekend. However, the staff were extremely warm & efficient and did the best they could given the limited resources. As someone who visits Pondicherry on holiday every few months, I'd recommend Maison de Perumal or Villa shanthi as a better value for money option- both these hotels are also located in White Town & the rates are approx the same. Besides being well maintained, these hotels also serve fantastic food which unfortunately was not the case at De L'Orient. Ps. If you do stay at De L'Orient in your visit, ensure you don't take a road facing room - 1)the bedroom windows are not sound proofed so you're going to hear traffic through the night. 2)The toilet has beautiful stained glass however (unfortunately!) it doesn't offer too much privacy so if someone from the neighbouring terrace should choose to look down, you'd be in full view!!!!

A hidden gem in the French Town area! The old world charm, genuine hospitality and excellent service. Food is so very good and the Chef, James literally pampers you. Sakthi from front desk is absolutely wonderful. Took care of all our needs and ensured our stay was comfortable. Stalin at the restaurant was always courteous and attentive. All in all a spectacular place that will be a home away from home for us. Truly outstanding. Congratulations to the entire team at Dune de L'orient.

A charming and well restored building in the heart of the French Quarter. Very helpful staff including the manager Shakti. He asked us our arrival time and held a couple of prime parking spots for us to allow us convenient parking. The rooms need a little more work to bring them up to the level we would expect in a luxury property. But all in all a wonderful hotel to take you back to a different era.
