‘Gratitude’ is a home and a place of retreat in Pondicherry, India. It has been restored lovingly over a period of three years maintaining the authenticity of the architectural style and method of construction that was prevalent when this house was built. What gives ‘Gratitude’ its true essence is the quiet joy and peace that gives this home a healing atmosphere which is rare to find in the world outside without compromising on comfort.
My boyfriend and I stayed at Gratitude for a couple of night as our first port of call in India, and what a start it was! Such a beautiful hotel, in an immaculately restored colonial property, right in the centre of the French Quarter. The building itself is elegant and the location is within walking distance to many amazing dining options, but maintains peace for you to unwind within. Every detail is thought through right down to the soothing jazz music. It is relaxing, stylish and wonderfully tranquil. The rooms are spacious and tastefully decorated, all coming off the peaceful, light filled courtyard. The staff were all very helpful and attentive without compromising your privacy, and we thoroughly enjoyed our morning conversations with the other guests and the owner over a…

Thank you for the review, Gemma. It was a pleasure to meeting you and Marty, we always love it when fellow designers and textile lovers come stay with us. When the small details are noticed by our guests it really makes all the effort worth it.

Gratitude is a haven! We are indeed full of gratitude to have experienced this exceptional b&b in Pondicherry. We loved every minute spent on the premises of this spectacularly, restored house. There is an overrriding sense of harmony and exquisite taste manifested in every nook and cranny! On top of the aesthetic qualities, and attention to detail of Gratitude, top rating goes to the staff who are warm, loving, constantly helpful and accomodating. Breakfast in the dining room was copious and delicious! Enlightening conversations with Sid during breakfast were a true highlight. Thank you, Sid! I also revelled in the morning swim at the Mantra for a small fee and a full body heavenly massage! Thank you to S. and A. ( husband and wife team) in the office for the attention, the…

We were here for a girls weekend in March. This place is a a very calm and beautiful guesthouse. Everything runs like clockwork. Right from the staff coming in playing music to fill the courtyard with soft chants in the morning or soothing jazz in the evenings, to a wonderful breakfast, and efficient housekeeping. We stayed for 2 nights and loved our rooms. Each room is different and they are exactly as shown in the photos. Housekeeping is very clean. One of our rooms had a problem with the AC and the team sorted it out immediately, changed rooms, and the AC technicians were in the next day sorting out the issue. The location of the guest house is also amazing. It is bang in the French quarter a a short walk from all the dining options or even shopping options. I would…

We thoroughly enjoyed our 3 night stay here. Beautiful building and courtyard - very calm. Spacious quirky room and bathroom. The breakfasts were wonderful- freshly cooked. We looked forward to returning each evening to sit in the peaceful courtyard - such a pleasure. Lovely place.

We loved everything about Gratitude. The rooms were beautiful, comfortable, and quiet. The staff could not have been more helpful. The best location for wandering around Pondicherry. We had time for two nights but I could easily see spending a week there to relax and unwind. The only very, very little thing was the lack of strong South Indian coffee. Minor, minor point. I highly recommend GRATITUDE and I have spent the last 17 years visiting and staying in Indian hotels. This was definitely one of my favorites.

Gratitude is one of those rare finds where style, genuine hospitality and peace collide. The heritage house is beautifully designed, quiet, clean and incredibly positioned in the heart of the White Town. Each room has its own unique charm. Sid and the team are warm and welcoming. And the highlight for me was the communal breakfast each morning where people gathered from around the world to share stories of adventure, life and tips on Pondy. The food prepared by the talented Shanti was also pretty memorable. I definitely recommend Gratitude, if you can get in!

We ended our most recent trip to India here - having spent a month in the north and then Tamil Nadu. When you enter Gratitude it's like a small private world where you can retreat from the heat and humidity of Pondicherry: a cluster of nine tastefully-furnished guest rooms around a courtyard sheltered by greenery. Gratitude is a wonderful combination of heritage style and modern amenity. It is characterful and comfortable, and the staff (mostly women - yeah!) are great. Saranya is an efficient and caring manager. We stayed in room 6 (I had room 4 last time I stayed) and it was lovely, with a king bed - great for breathing space on those hot nights. But watch out because this room has a small staircase (without balustrade) up to the bathroom (with bath and shower). This hotel is…
