Gratitude Heritage is a very efficiently run heritage hotel in the heart of Pondicherry. Essentially a heritage property converted into a hotel, it's a charming space to spend a weekend. The staff are warm and friendly and service is attentive.

We booked Room 4 via the hotel website which turned out to be smaller than the pictures shown. The pictures showed a room with an additional bed, but when we arrived at the hotel, we saw a dressing table occupying the space where the extra bed would have been.

When we highlighted this to the staff, they were quick to recognize the error and volunteered to upgrade us to a better, spacious room. We appreciated their honesty and sincerity in ensuring we had a great experience. The room was spacious with a traditional 4 poster bed and the bathroom was large and equipped with natural soaps.

We did a day trip to Pichavaram Mangrove, the 2nd largest mangrove in the world, and the kitchen staff packed us the most delicious breakfast of croissant sandwiches for our trip. We could call for filter coffee multiple times in the day throughout our teip and the breakfast the next day was modest but freshly made and homely. We sat at a common, large dining table, a community experience that I quite enjoyed.

The hotel courtyard has plenty of greenery and spaces to sit and enjoy some quiet time. All in all, a great stay in Pondicherry.

I found Gratitude heritage home featured in Condé Nast magazine while looking for unique properties to stay in in Pondicherry. I loved what I saw on their website & booked two standard rooms. Please read the house guidelines before you book. Gratitude is not a hotel. There is no room service, though the room is cleaned everyday, no televisions & no restaurant. Breakfast is served every morning in the dining room & is included in the room charge & lunch & dinner can be cooked if you let them know in advance.
There is laundry service at a nominal charge. Also, you have to leave your street shoes at the entrance - the home stay provides you with slippers to wear in your room & on the property.
That said, we were totally charmed by our stay in this stunning heritage home. The staff was awesome. They were very attentive & went out of their way for their guests. The breakfast was so fresh & delicious. Their cooks are fabulous.
The room was a nice size as was the bathroom. They are very environmentally conscious & you see that in the little things at the property. No plastic water bottles in rooms, no disposable serve ware.
The property is on the best street in white town & 5 minutes to the promenade, beach & many other attractions like the Notre Dame church, Cluny embroidery center etc. There are plenty of cafes & restaurants within a 2-10 minute walking distance. We just loved this home stay & look forward to coming back again.

We spent 3 nights at this lovely peaceful oasis in the heart of the French Quarter.
Gratitude emphasise that they are a homestay, not a hotel. Don’t expect a bar, restaurant or room service. Guests staying more than 2 nights are encouraged to unpack their cases and use the wardrobes and shelves.
Breakfast is served at a communal table adjacent to the shaded courtyard. We enjoyed varied delicious food cooked by Shanti and the opportunity to chat to fellow guests. During our stay were guests from Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai and London. Adjacent to the breakfast area is a communal fridge where you can leave your own locally purchased drinks or snacks; there is a good wine shop less than 10 minutes walk from Gratitude.
There is a lovely roof terrace adjacent to the massage room; the terrace is the only place in the property where you can smoke.
We loved our room (room 6) with its 4 poster bed; the bathroom was on a slightly higher level up 6 steps, care needed if visiting in the middle of the night!
We loved our stay and look forward to visiting again.

We stayed in this hotel for 2 nights based on what we had seen on a BBC series called the Real Marigold Hotel

We stayed in Room 6 - first floor accessed from an open corridor - large room with a high ceiling - 4 poster - bed hard – but slept well - daybed + chair - dressing table - hanging storage space - safe – air conditioning + fan – 5 interesting curved and open steps to bathroom - shower heated by geyser - ok not great - had to jiggle to get temperature – soap + shampoo - no in room hot drinks – no TV - Wi-Fi unsecured –
breakfast 8.30 to 9.30 - disappointing - large croissant hard butter overly sweet jam - coffee not bad - missed out on second day - shared fridge – no interaction with owners or staff apart from check-in

We have stayed in other heritage properties and the experience have more often than not met our or their expectations and so it was with the Gratitude – it is well located within the French Quarter – the room was quiet – but in the end it was too basic to be enjoyable for us – thank you

I stayed at Gratitude for 3 nights on my way back to Chennai.
The fist thing I must say is a big thank you to Saranya for arranging a courier to the UK for me. I had some important documents to sign and she was so helpful with this and with other things including getting my iPhone fixed when the screen smashed.

The house is beautifully restored with great furniture and comfy beds. Breakfast is served downstairs in the morning and it is plentiful and delicious. My room was clean and the bathroom huge. I loved the way they put the shampoo in a little pot rather than plastic and the soap is beautifully wrapped in paper. Filtered water is available in bottles in the room. I really appreciate it when guest houses and hotels go out of their way to reduce their waste and Gratitude does this.

You can take a 6 min Tuk Tuk to the sister property, Kariappa for a swim in the glorious and cool lap pool.

They arranged a fantastic massage for me as well.

The house is close to the beach and all the good restaurants in town.

All in all it was a glorious stay and I was made to feel very much at home in this beautiful home. Thank you!

More than its beaches, Pondicherry is known for its French Tamil style bungalows and the whole white town and to stay in one of these heritage bungalows was on the top of our Pondy wishlist.

After a lot of research, we came across Gratitude Heritage which looked so pretty and seemed to be offering everything we were looking for like a gorgeous facade, a stunning courtyard and rooms to die for.

We stayed here for a couple of nights in one of their biggest room and it was drop dead gorgeous. The large windows, cute little antiques, a small balcony overlooking the courtyard and a bed so high that you need a stool to climb on to it made us simply adore the room. The bathroom was huge too and beautifully designed.

Little things like a lemonade as welcome drink (believe me it’s the best lemonade I’ve ever had), taking off your shoes at the entrance, owners of the property staying in the same property made everything feel so homely yet so professional and we loved every bit of our stay. Not to forget the simple but scrumptious breakfasts at the common breakfast table in the dining hall was again an experience in itself.

The parking on the street opposite the property wasn’t an issue and the location is in the heart of white town. All the famous restaurants are within a 3 to 5 minutes walking distance and the rock beach is even nearer.

We just can’t wait to visit Pondy again and this time stay for even longer at this cute little property.

As the name suggests, the place has more of the feel of a home than a hotel. For example, two long tables are laid out in the breakfast and dining area, shaded by a verandah and a leafy mango tree. This encourages guests to sit together and we had lively conversations over a leisurely, delicious south Indian breakfast (other options are also available) during the two days that we stayed there. The rooms are simply and tastefully done. The staff are superb and helpful.
The bathrooms, reflect the environmental ethos of the place, with helpful tips on traditional bathing practices that help to minimize water waste. Highly recommended

Gratitude was our home over the Christmas period and it didn’t disappoint.
The breakfast included was delicious and was made more enjoyable by sharing a table with other guests.
Each room is individual and has traditional furniture and fittings. A comfortable room with handmade robes available to use..
Staff were helpful and friendly.. ideally situated in Pondicherry two roads back from the promenade..

‘Home isn’t four walls, it is the people you are with.’ – and it was an absolute pleasure staying at Sid’s Home. Sid and his team made the stay most comfortable. All members of the staff including Saranya, were warm, friendly, and helpful. They were there without being intrusive, always happy to answer any queries we had.

As you enter, there is a courtyard with a lot of greenery around, next to which is the dining hall and a bright airy reading room. It was lovely to spend some time here with a cup of tea and read while listening to Carla Bruni softly playing in the background . The dining area allow for privacy in the 2-4 seater tables, as well as an opportunity to meet and interact with other guests. It was fun sharing travel stories with fellow travellers from around the globe, while having breakfast in the long dining table. All meals (lunch/dinner available on pre-order) and complimentary full breakfast with milk, fruits, muesli, croissant, homemade jams, and hot Indian/European dishes served here were excellent. My favourites were the roast chicken and mango chutney cooked by Shanti for dinner. There is also a 24hr tea and coffee stand in one corner for those looking for a hot cup anytime.

The rooms were quiet, clean and very comfortable to relax. The bathrooms have hot and cold shower, and the traditional ‘balti’ and ‘lota’ too. Although it did not rain during my stay, I am sure it would be just as wonderful to sit in the veranda outside the room and watch the raindrops fall on the mango trees in the courtyard.

It is about 200 metres to the Promenade – lovely for morning or evening walks. There are several good restaurants within walking distance as well.

I definitely recommend this homestay to anyone travelling to Pondicherry.

The website, the photos looks very good and might feel its worth the money, but once we reached the property, soon we realised that it was not worth it. We took rooms number 3&8. We paid a total of ₹24000 for two days. The rooms are smaller than what it looks on website. The rooms dont have any place to keep luggage, and all the furniture is different in different rooms. Seems like its an assembled set of furniture, be it the dressing mirror or dining chairs, or cutlery etc. They have kept brass bucket, which is very small and the bathroom is also small to move around. In older rooms due to old construction, they have provided one small instant geyser, where the hot water gets over very soon. In terms of food -there is only one indian bfast, and one french item( croissant ) and everyday only two fruits - papaya and banana. On second day, when we asked for extra serving, they told the bfast is over!!..which was shocking. The lunch and dinner was a set menu - ₹1500, which was very expensive hence we didnt order it. Hence the stay was okayish and not worthy for the money.

Response from Kakoli Banerjee, Owner at Gratitude, a Heritage Home
Responded 13 Feb 2022
Thank you for your feedback, Pallavi. The furniture in our rooms are antiques that have been hand picked, every room is different and uniquely designed as during the restoration process Kakoli actually lived in every room while designing its interiors. We are quite clear that we are not a hotel but a home, we don't have matching furniture in every room and that's part of our personality. Apologies for the issues around breakfast, it is something we are addressing directly with more options. Regarding the set-menu dinner, the price quoted is for a four course Chettinad-Pondicherry tasting menu that is all home cooked for a special dinner. On regular days we have many more simpler and affordable days. Again, we are not a hotel with a restaurant for every occasion, but a home with a kitchen that serves home cooked specialties. The brass buckets are an optional experience, every room has hot water showers accessible.
