How can you improve on perfection . The location directly on the child friendly beach could not be improved. The operating theatre standards in cleanliness cannot be bettered . The new chef however has raised the standard of locally sourced traditional italian food The team of young friendly waiting staff could start a new Olympic sport for the speed they efficiently move around the tables, always with a smile. We worked out that it is now around 25 years we have been staying here and we often meet guests we have seen over the years and like us cannot think of a better hotel .Raffaella and her team deserve a medal for the quiet friendly efficient way they run La Siranella especially through these last couple of years .
Grazie
As we booked the hotel last minute via the internet we were a little apprehensive as to what we may find on arrival. We needn't have worried.
We couldn't have wished for a more pleasant location. The hotel is directly on the beach, with it's own area sectioned off complete with beds, parasols and an attendant. And I must say that having stayed in all levels of hotel both on business and on holiday this was absolutley the cleanest hotel I have stayed in - and believe me my wife is extremely particular in this respect.
The management and staff took real pride in the hotel and were all extremely pleasant, helpful and we had a lot of fun trying to use our basic Italian language skills with everyone there.
Sperlonga is a wonderful resort for a relaxing, chill out holiday for couples and families, and La Sirenalla is a wonderful hotel run by lovely people.
La Sirenella is not a luxury hotel but it is very well run and the food - we were offered a choice of two menus every evening - had some definite high spots including great soups as an alternative to pasta, served with justifiable pride, and a classic rum baba. I was rewarded for expressing my appreciation for the latter with a repeat, saved and served up for me at breakfast time. An experience that was definitely a first for me, by which I mean that I actually enjoyed eating that cake instead of my usual fruit and cereal!
The friendliness and kindness of the staff makes this family run hotel into something more than just a place to stay. We consider this to have been one of the most relaxing holidays that we have spent in Italy.
We had to be out of the room, off the beach and out of the parking lot by 11am even though the next day was a Monday in late September and nobody was waiting to take our place.
For me there is nothing more disappointing than sitting down with a healthy appetite to a choice of only two, utterly uninspired dishes.
The manageress didn't want to know why when I told her we wouldn't be coming back.
The rooms are pleasant enough - very clean with nice bed linen and reasonably spacious.
The food was good Italian home cooking - nothing complicated but very nice. After I told the owner how nice I thought the food was he offered us seconds at every meal! Full board is only €3 more per day than half board so is well worth it. Breakfast was very basic but normal for Italy. Breakfast ends at 9 a.m. which we thought was a bit early.
The owners are very helpful. They are very courteous and formal - not effusive.
One minor point - ball games (even harmless things like racket ball) are not allowed on the hotel's section of the beach. We thought this was a bit unreasonable for a family holiday but as there are public beaches either side where we could play it wasn't too much of a problem. Anyway, we got round it by playing cricket with a beach spade a bat and bits of driftwood for wickets. The beach attendant was too bemused to tell us to stop!
The place has a slightly old-fashioned feel and is all the nicer for it.
All in all, I would highly recommend both the town and the hotel. We had a very nice stay there and would definitely go back.
Reasonably easy to get to from Rome termini (Fondi / Sperlonga train - 1 hour 15 mins. Bus from the rail station to Sperlonga - 30 mins)
Hotel Plus points :-
Hotel and room very, very, very clean.
Great location, right on the beach, 15 min walk to the old town centre
50 yds from the bus stop to take you back to Fondi / Sperlonga railway station
Staff helpful with timetables and directions etc.
Hotel minus points :-
As other guests have mentioned, the hotel is run as a near 'military' regime, the hotel bar is a mere facade, in the 7 days we were there never saw a guest order a drink (alcoholic or otherwise) , when I did try to order a drink (relaxing in the evening on the patio overlooking the sea) the manageress told me "she was the bar" ? and if I wanted a beer or glass of wine I had to see her ???.
No fridge in the room, ridiculous, as temperatures while we were there must have been 30 C., I resorted to buying bags of ice from the local shop and leaving them in the bathroom sink with our bottles of water.
Our ground floor room in the annexe faced the beach at ground level so we had no choice to keep the blind down for privacy, this hampered drying swimsuits and towels on the line outside the window.
Noisy cleaners 'banging' around in the corridor outside from 07:00 onward, not what you want on your 'relaxing' summer hols.
Miserable, sullen beach attendant, muttering under his breath anytime you tried to converse with him or ask a question, at 25 euros a day for chairs and parasol he could have been a little more friendly.
Breakfast was strange, mostly homemade cakes and cereal, great if you have a sweet tooth but very very sparse on the savory front.
To sum up :- If you are teetotal, don't have a sense of humour, like a very clean hotel with little atmosphere and run with military precision then this is the perfect place for you.
We have been traveling throughout the world, experiencing many hotels with various ratings, but we never experienced a better 3* hotel, honestly. The main imperative for the hotel is the cleanness. In every area, with no exception. Every employee is going after it. In the morning the group of experienced local cleaning ladies is moving through the hotel, dressed like nurses in hospital and doing their excellent job (our first association with The Grand Budapest Hotel movie came up :)
The staff is extremely helpful. Just one example. Matteo, the best lifeguard we ever met, maintained at high level the beach equipment and the beach as such. He always looked for something to improve, to put it away, to sweep up the sand from the hotel areas etc. He observed the guests and responded to every indication of some need - to open the sunshade, to clean the lawn chair, to empty the ashtray, to order the coffee for you... (second association with the great movie). Of course he shielded the guest from importunate beach sellers and guided the vacationers from other hotels or momentary beach visitors to move out from hotel beach area, so you have really feeling of exclusiveness. The top experience was, when one really old and locomotive handicapped guest with crutch appeared and Matteo immediately came up to him, propped up his arms and walked with the old man along the beach.
We cannot confirm the bad experiences with lifeguards or the owner mentioned in some singular reviews. We experienced the opposite. Some reviewers complained about the hotel rules, likening the hotel to military camp. These reviews were really absurd. There are no explicit rules and nobody is supervising. What you can experience are only unwritten habits of regular guests and we enjoyed to accommodate, cause the habits have the sense and are making the stay more effective, so you can focus only on relax (specific areas for room keys, for flip-flops etc.).
In the rooms you have everything you need, even the bidet with special intimate hygiene gel in the bathroom. No mini bar or fridge in the room. We had the room no. 333, with balcony and sea view. It could not be better! Wow!
The breakfast? Totally satisfactory. What is special, is the buffalo ricotta cheese and outstanding Italian salami, ham and bread. Special salty and sweet home cakes surprised as well. Everyone shall be able to choose from the selection.
What is special, is the lady from the owning Chinappi family, who is in fact running the hotel and is responsible for communication with guests and fulfilling of their needs. She is very invisible, sometimes you even do not know about her presence, but she is very intensive perceiving what is going on around, ready to assist to you (third movie association). We called her the "queen" and we would like to thank her for everything, especially for the present she gave us while leaving.
We can only recommend the hotel! It is a hidden gem of the Sperlonga coast.
