We stayed at the residence for 5 nights, following a safari. The views are incredible...genuinely some of the most beautiful we've ever seen. The rooms are lovely as well and super spacious. What you see on social media is accurate - the place is stunning, and really well designed. HOWEVER, the overriding feeling we got from our stay was one of disappointment. Floating breakfast is advertised hard on their instagram, but it's at an additional cost (so not on the "all inclusive"... lol) and will be stolen by monkeys (more on these later). The beach is lovely... but as soon as you step onto it, you're swarmed by 4-5 pushy salespeople trying to sell you crazy expensive excursions. They try to use pushy 1990s sales tactics which means that most guests end up just avoiding the beach- it isn't worth it for the hassle you get once you step onto it. You also absolutely can't swim in the sea, because of the tides it is only ankle-height for such a far stretch- this was disappointing as the water looked absolutely beautiful. Service around the pool is fine and cocktails are blandly ok- nothing to sing about but not the worst either. Service staff are kind but untrained and generally slow - by the time you get a coffee with breakfast, you're likely to have finished eating! We also only saw a manager once during our entire stay there - the staff are clearly lacking in direction a lot of the time. Meal times...breakfast is the equivalent of a holiday Inn express plus a pancake station. To say this is 5* service from this hotel is just plain wrong...cold dry food in metal trays with an egg station and a pancake station (both of which are constantly swarmed with wasps). Several days we couldn't touch they honey, Nutella or strawberry dressing on the basis of too many dead wasps in them... staff don't care and do nothing about them, even when they swarm you at the tables as well. Lunch is better! A la carte menu is the best this hotel had to offer and probably the only time where you do get 5* meal service because the food here is far better than any other meal. Whether this is intentional because most people skip lunch.... who knows, but it's obviously a step up from any other mealtime. Dinner was bland. A couple of pasta and meat stations accompanying a bland, cold buffet. There were nights where it was better than others but the quality was much lower than we'd expect from a 5* hotel. It got to the point we would just order more at lunch to avoid bothering with the dinner service. The entertainment was good fun either dinner and enjoyable, but didn't make up for the lacklustre food. As alluded, wasps are a huge challenge. We saw them crawling INTO drinks before they were being served to people. The staff ignore them... this hotel staff need a lesson in hygiene, as 25%+ of the drinks have likely had wasps swarming around (either the drinks themselves or the bottles they were poured from). What's worse is at breakfast/lunch they swarm food- we sat inside every time and caught nine (9!!!!) wasps under various cups during one mealtime- excluding the ones we missed, it made every breakfast and lunch hugely uncomfortable (though to be fair, wasps may have made an improvement on some of the breakfast food). We went for a private beach dinner and the food was OK, but not great. Its a 5* menu with 3* quality and you can expect your food to be bland regardless of what you order. Monkeys are a big problem. It took 5 nights before we got a decent night sleep due to the noise from the monkeys, they climb all over the roof and scream during the night without pause. Numerous times at mealtimes monkeys would climb on tables and take food, and on one mealtime actually attack someone over food. They go past the point of being cute and this hotel has a BIG problem in the way the moneys act around humans. As a contrast in Kenya, we had security around with catapults and the monkeys know very clearly not to go near people (particularly during mealtimes) due to excellent management- which is sorely missing at The Residence. Bad security and bad management have made the monkeys here go from amusing to downright unpleasant and worrying to be around. Overall it was an OK stay, but seeing friends we met on our Safari go to other hotels and resorts across Kenya and Zanzibar and hearing about their experiences- we can't help but feel disappointed we went to the residence over another hotel. This hotel looks gorgeous and has stunning views... but with such poor management and service compared to the other hotels, it just felt like we got the short straw. This certainly shouldn't be considered a 5* hotel - more like 3* with some 5* views. Considering what you pay, you can do better in Zanzibar than going to The Residence.

We appreciated the welcome, service, availability kindness and attentiveness of all the staff. In hands of a dynamic young management team, the Residence is a wonderful place and is promised a bright future. The Residence is for us an exceptional hotel in the middle of an authentic and preserved site. It is a real privilege to have stayed these few days in that hotel and to meet such a welcoming and attentive team. They did everything to make our stay exceptional, unexpected and fabulous. We have left them happy but also so sad not to be able to extend this exceptional stay. We are happy to recommend The Residece.

First of all it is true that the road is awful and this was after a recent upgrade. If you are spending so much on such an amazing hotel then I don't understand why you wouldn't ensure the road is fit and proper. Something the hotel definitely needs to correct. That aside the hotel is stunning. The grounds of the hotel and villas are unreal. The photos don't do the villas justice for how surreal they are. Having a private pool and big double roomed villa was perfect to relax after our Safari. The housekeeper staff and concierge staff are excellent! Extremely attentive and ensure that any queries or issues you have are address promptly. Any issues we had were dealt with quickly and efficiently. I went for a dive and it's great to have a dive centre on site that is continually staffed. There is a couple of issues with this hotel that I don't think should exist at a 5 star hotel hence why I gave it 4 stars. There was a lack of attention to detail that shouldn't happen - for example on arrival our phone in the room didn't work and one of the bikes had a flat tyre. At a 5 star hotel someone should be checking these things daily. Secondly the waiting staff at the restaurant weren't great. It took too long to get drunk orders and for the check to arrive. I personally do not think 5 star hotels should have buffet either but that is a personal opinion.

Dear Chris, Delighted to hear you enjoyed your recent stay with us, especially our unique spacious private pool villa, services offered particularly by our housekeeping team, and diving services. Please be informed that the outside road belongs to authorities and the resort does not have any authority to work on it until after a careful review of all the feedback from our valuable guests, we took the initiative to highlight the matter, and the initiative paid whereby the resort is making entire 4.2 km road by itself just for our guests which still be used for public, trust this will help to make sure that our guests arrive comfortably to the resort. We have as well taken note of the areas you have kindly pointed out to improve and promise to work on the right away. Trust this experience will not deter you from returning and you will allow us to serve you with a completely different experience. With Regards, Bagus Paramarta General Manager

We have just returned from two weeks travelling around Zanzibar, included in our tour was a four night stay at the lovely Residence. An overall enjoyable experience with some really nice features, such as the amazing villa with it's own excellent patio and pool. Also great to see monkeys in the grounds, along with cute dik-dik antelope also. A special mention to two members of staff who really went the extra mile to look after us, Edson greeted us when we arrived and ensured we were comfortable throughout our stay, and Abdul who worked in the bar/restaurant who also did a great job in making our stay special. Thanks both, Andrew & Jane Potter

My wife and I spent 8 nights here after 5 nights in Uganda on a 'bucket list' holiday Gorilla Trekking. We were looking forward to just chilling out and relaxing. We arrived at 12:10 in the afternoon. I mention this as I timed the journey down the famous/infamous 'Rocky Road'. Under 10mins, so don't believe the 20-30 mins in other reviews. And after the bumpy roads in the hills of Uganda, this was a breeze, so don't be put off. Additionally, on our departure, work was underway to tar mac the road so things will get better. So arrived at 12:10 to a lovely glass of cold sparkling wine and a cold towel. Check in was a little laborious, they asked for holiday vouchers (we had none and they knew we were coming!!) and I wanted to upgrade to all inclusive. Eventually done I think they just wanted us to wait in reception. I had to suggest that we could go to the pool bar and they could find us when our villa was ready at 2pm (as we were told). Here we met with Justina, our first Star, who looked after us and insisted we had lunch and relax and trusted us on our 'all inc. basis. However, at 3:30pm I had to go back to reception to find out that our room was ready at 2pm but, obviously, no one had come to inform us. Still a quick change and a dip in the amazing pool and we were happy. Dinner, later was fine. But it was then that they informed us that they had run out of the wine that's included on the all inc. package. Oh well time for bed and sort this out in the morning. The next day I spoke with Larry in reception who was extremely helpful. He understood our problems and apologised and said that he would sort it. And, yes he did. Enter Wilfred, the game changer. What a Gent, and an absolute star and probably 'The Residence's' best asset. He looked after us from then on, but not in an 'in your face way' way. He just popped by at breakfast and lunch and dinner to make sure that everything was okay. From then on the holiday became relaxing. The food at The Dining Room is good and extensive, so you will always find something that you will like. Always go to the BBQ (next to the pizza oven) to get the hot food, as the food in the chafing dish's may have been sitting around for a bit and goes cold. If you are all inc. you can order from the A La Carte menu at both lunch and dinner so this expands your options even more. So there are no surprises, items marked with an 'S' incur a supplement (addition cost) like wise on the drink's menu. The Pavillon restaurant normally offers a set meal, and mainly fish. Check out the meals at the pool bar or reception and book there. We stayed in a Luxury Ocean Front Pool Villa (No. 112 or mojo moja mbili in Swahili) which was lovely, with your own stretch of private beach overlooking the jetty to our right. A 3 minute walk to the pool and a minute walk to the Jetty where 'Sundowners' happen each night (except Wednesday's) Stunning views with a long drink watching the sunset...definitely worth stopping by. The beach is extremely tidal and even when it's in, it's quite shallow, so don't fool yourself that there's great snorkeling if that's your thing. You're best off taking a trip. That said, the view's are fantastic. This is probably why most people will sit around the fantastic infinity pool, the largest one I've ever seen. And even though it was quite busy around the pool, there was plenty of room for everyone and never squashed in the pool. A few reviewer's have doubted the 5* rating of The Residence. My thought's are that 'Yes' it is. It's 5* in Zanzibar. Okay the patio furniture isn't brand new and the monkeys sit and play on it, but so what it's patio furniture, that lives outside and the monkeys (who were hilarious) were here first. Use a towel on the seat's....sorted. The same with the ground's, which could do with a little more TLC, but they are beautiful. And if you decide on a Garden View Room, expect more leaves in your pool. We didn't have that problem and the pool guys came round every day. As for drinks, The cheapest bottle of wine/sparkling wine is $35, a beer 500ml $9 and a soft drink $6. Cocktails start at $15, so you have to work out for yourself if the all inclusive supplement (which includes the al la carte menu) if worth it for $80 pppd. All in all, we both thoroughly enjoyed our stay here, thanks to Larry, Justina and predominantly WILFRED. Would be return.......... IN A HEARTBEAT.

For those looking to totally disconnect and find total inner peace in Zanzibar then this is the resort to be. We were first concerned about the isolated and distant location of the resort but once we checked in and settled in, we quickly understood why isolation and peace are priceless. From the check in process to the quality of the room and staff service, I would give them an amazing review. I had an unfortunate minor accident where I tripped and sprained my ankle during the stay however I must say the doctor and staff were very professional and concerned about my well-being when and after it happened. Special thanks to the Mwinyi and the doctor for their swift and rapid response in treating my leg. Also Special thanks to the following guys who made our stay magnificent: Abdul- the waiter who can speak Arabic, English, French, Swahili and German was always energetic and smiling in everything he did. Benjamin- the concierge who made sure all our needs were met in an impeccable manner. Edson- our hotel driver made sure our room is in the best kept quality during our stay. Elibakir- despite being a trainee showed great passion and willingness in everything he did. Mwinyi -our activities tour guide made sure our dolphin and sunset tour activities were off the top most standards.

If you’re looking for total isolation, peace, comfort and relaxation , then this is the ideal resort to visit in Zanzibar. Initially we were a bit skeptical about the location because it is quite far from the city but once we settled in, the hospitality and environment of the place was very welcoming. Special thanks to Benjamin- concierge who made sure all our needs were catered to during our stay. Abdul- waiter, who speaks multiple languages, swahili, English, french, german is a very friendly, enthusiastic and hardworking person. Elibakir- Although still in training, shows great enthusiasm and passion while learning and doing his job. Edson- our room tour guide and driver made sure everything was perfect in the room. Mwinyi- made sure our sunset cruise and dolphin excursion was luxurious, safe and friendly. I would definitely come back again and recommend this resort to anyone wishing to totally relax and escape once in a while.

Literally THE most incredible trip to Zanzibar. We wouldn't have wanted to stay anywhere else but here. Absolutely perfect from start to finish. We would recommend The Residence in a heart beat! If you’re considering booking, do it!!! You won’t regret it! Me and my husband got married at The Residence Zanzibar in September and it couldn’t have been more perfect, it was everything we dreamed of and more. We cannot thank Frank Komba enough for making our dream Wedding possible and ensuring that we had the most spectacular Wedding Day. His communication during the planning process all the way through to when we arrived and once we got home (ensuring we received our legal wedding documentation and photos/video etc) was absolutely fantastic. He made sure we had everything we wanted and made sure the day ran seamlessly. Masai guard, cake, flowers, commissioner, after wedding dinner on the beach all sorted and just perfect. The Residence Zanzibar is just beautiful. The beach absolutely stunning (the ocean is very tidal!). The villas are amazing, so big and clean. Our housekeeping staff were very lovely leaving us little surprises often. The private plunge pool in the villa was great as well and the floating breakfast was a nice treat - just watch out for the monkeys who may join you! The water sports on the beach that are included are brilliant and would definitely recommend the walk into the local village! Couldn’t fault the food either at breakfast, lunch and dinner! Each evening had a different theme and the entertainment was good too. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Special mention not only to Frank but also to Farida (our lonely waitress) and Juma at the beach! If there was a negative to be said it would be that the wifi isn’t consistent (not that you need it on holiday!) and the dirt track into the hotel is a little bit of a pain but so worth it!!! We travelled as a party of 6 and we all had the best time. Thank you all for an incredible stay and hosting our dream Wedding, we will be back for sure!!!
