What you get with Despo is what you pay for. It's cheap. I should start by saying that I was with a friend and we weren't looking for the ritz. We were looking for cheap and cheerful all inclusive and that was what we got. However, we have been on similar holidays before and this doesn't stack up against them. The food is simply utterly terrible and we didn't eat there most days as a result. Luckily down the road. there are a myriad of restaurants, bars that serve traditional greek food. Why the hotel at Despo couldn't put on some gryos or Souvlaki at any point, is beyond me but the food was shockingly bad. The bar wasn't much better. The drinks range was very basic, there were no cocktails in the evenings. Granted i'm difficult but i was limited by not liking Raki or Beer. There was at least ouzo. The bar man was rude and insisted that you had finished your drink before you could get another one, even if you were getting a drink for a friend to save you all queuing! I saw him quarrelling and telling off with other members of staff and generally got the vibe that none of the staff wanted to be there. Fortunately there were a number of enjoyable bars that were within walking distance. The pool was good, but there was an incident that was rather poorly handled. Somehow, someone had had an accident in the pool, and the staff dully fished it out with a fishing rod. This in itself wasn't so bad, but it was the fact that they paraded it around the communal area before depositing it in the bushes for all the guests to see, without making any effort to hide it away. Furthermore, they did nothing with the pool, not closing it nor even adding some chorine to disinfect it. In fact they just went back to bartending as if nothing had happened. Whilst this gave rise to a very funny moment when one of the oblivious german lads staying at the hotel dived in with the encouragement of his friends. Hilarious to watch but not very hygienic. The rooms were very basic, no problems there but the fact that they charge for AC was a bit concerning. The only saving grace was that I met a bunch of other guests who were lovely. Fortunately, I was able to make friends with a number of them which lead to excursions and meals out etc. The younger members of Staff were also excellent. Dimitri and George in particular were exceptionally helpful, and were welcoming to us. They stopped for chats and told us about the Greek culture and life on the island. Between them and the other guests, they made the holiday a pleasant experience overall. Despos are lucky to have them covering their backs.

Where to start with this place.. rooms were ok tho AC is extra cost per day. Some staff were friendly (until manager told them to stop chatting with guests and do more work!). Those were the positives. Food. Pretty awful overall, very very limited selection, often repeated so not much variety either. Snacks from the pool bar very hot/miss. Staff not knowing which meat a dish was (was told pork, goat and lamb by three different staff members about the exact same dish). Mostly lukewarm if that and eating area was quite basic. Cleaning processes weren’t great. A child had a number 2 accident in the pool one day and staff just fished it out with a little net then emptied it into a flowerbed by reception. No extra chlorine or anything applied so people dived into area accident happened soon after as no signs were put up. Location, was ok. Good for buses but you have to cross a major road to get into the town. Town consists of several bars, a few restaurants and that’s about it. All inclusive was ‘ok’ tho you had to finish your drink in order to get another, you can’t just order two drinks which was odd and selection was very poor as no real fruit juices to make cocktails, so yeah it was ‘ok’. Managed to meet some other great guests which made the stay bearable but I’d never return given the choice!

This is a super little hotel! Kept very clean and tidy with immaculate gardens around the pool area. It's a throwback to a more traditional Greek holiday before all the giant hotel companies came in with the supersize resorts. The staff are all friendly and there is a decent selection in the restaurant every meal, mostly Greek foods, salads etc but always alternate options for fussy eaters or kids. Bar is a bit limited on the all inclusive but it depends what you're after. It's not a banging night life place although the centre of town is a10 minute walk away, as are the beaches. Would very highly recommend this place and will definitely be staying here again on our next trip to crete. I would recommend paying the little extra for the ac right enough as it's VERY warm there

Just returned from a 2 week stay at the Despo Hotel. Myself, my partner and our 10 year old daughter thoroughly enjoyed it. The staff were fantastic and couldn’t do enough for you. The room was basic but very clean and had wonderful views of the hills, Olive groves and veg garden. The hotel grounds were stunning, filled with interesting flowers, bushes and fruit trees. There was always a good choice of food mainly consisting of locally grown, fresh produce. When the chef knew that I was vegetarian, he made sure I always had a veggie option every lunch and evening meal. The kitchen staff also made us a pack up when they heard we were going on a day trip. The pool and pool bar were excellent choices to just hang around and chill. All inclusive drinks were basic but fine. My daughter especially liked the ice cream every afternoon. Overall, we have had a fantastic stay at the Despo and wanted to say a big thank you to all of the staff for making our holiday a GREAT holiday. For a 3 star hotel it doesn’t get better than this.

The hotel grounds are lovely however rooms are dirty and in need of updating air conditioning is charged at 7 euros a day The chef is a happy friendly man but food has dramatically dropped in standard so much so we never used the restaurants other the odd occasion we wanted some chips when the staff were rude and literally snatched them from you if you dared take them round the pool. Advertising a variety of snacks which wasn’t the case you could have one from the nights before menu If you didn’t want or couldn’t drink the watered down beer you would have to drink the fizzy drinks which tasted like salt if you don’t drink raki or ouzo then the beer or the salty drinks are your only choice of beverages George the bar man is the worst I have ever come across rude I witnessed him a arguing with two of the hotels female guests rude rude man. Reception staff Marie is fantastic and goes out of her way to ensure nothing is too much trouble however the other lady was rude and unprofessional in her dealings with a unapproachable. Ok if you want just a place to bed your head down if don’t mind the dirty rooms

We had a one week vacation in Despo hotel. We arrived around midnight and were welcomed friendly and taken to the room. The room was ok but a bit old and plumbing was not very clean. It was two of us but the room was for a family of 4 (a double bed and a bulk bed). So, we were lucky to have enough space. Though, as some other reviews mention, some rooms a really small. From the window we could see a chicken farm and some hills. It was quite enough for us to sleep with an open balcony door. We didn't use the air conditioner but it costed 7 euros per night. Room service was supposed to come every two days to change towels and every three days to change bed sheets. In our experience they came more often. Though once they left the door open. Nothing was gone but it was still annoying. The staff at the reception is nice and helpful. The main downside was food. The selection was very limited and quality poor. For breakfast it was some kind of eggs (boiled, scrambled or fried - Fried eggs had some strange smell, we couldn't eat them), canned beans, cheap sausages and fried dough?? or a french toast with a lot of fat. Corn flakes were edible at least. For lunch and dinner it was some kind of meat, fries all the time (except once they were replaced with the instant potato). Some food were the same for lunch and dinner or we could see that, for example nuggets from lunch were used in the salad for dinner. The hot dishes were often too fried and just looked terrible. Meat was edible in most cases. Even worse than food were beverages: instant coffee with not enough powder on the salty water, deluded cheap soda that tasted horrible and salty water that was drinkable only very cold. It was literally the worst coffee in my life. Overall, the experience was ok except for the food. I would definitely not go again and wouldn't recommend anyone to stay there unless you like poor quality beer and don't care what you eat at all.

All hotel is clean and garden is really nice and full of trees and flowers, pool is also very nice and clean. But furniture is older and bathroom need a reconstruction. We had a superior rooms on the ground floor with balcony view on the garden full of lemon trees what I really like, but I dont recommended a basement rooms because it looks small and bad and everybody see into your ,balcony,. Food was good, but not great. You can choose 4 food from the main food and there are lots of salads, and for desert is cake and watermelon. Its little sad that the kitchen isnt much greek because we had spaghetti, fish fingers, nuggets, chips, chicken. I was happy that I will be eat greek food but only one day was a Musaka(classic greek food) and next day again spagetti. Its all was good taste but It will be great if they start cook more greek food. And a snack afternoon was one day a burger, next day a sendwich and again a burger. Icecream was really fantastic. But it will be better if they serve like a snack also some fruit and maybe salads because if you have all inclusive you want more than half of burger. So final feel was good, we enjoy time here but there is lot of things what they can do better

We had a great stay here. We paid extra for the superior room so don't know what the other rooms are like. Our air con didn't work so they bought and installed a brand new unit. Pool is fab, always warm. More food than you can eat. The chef was amazing and made me vegetarian specials nearly every day. Endless supply of Greek salad and tazatziki. All staff really good. Ice cream, snacks and booze available all day. Good central spot for getting about. Bus stop near. Go to Heronissos for a day out. Thanks to all staff at Despo for a great time.

My husband me and my 16 year old son came here for 10 days had an amazing time hotel is very clean gardener keeps the gardens looking immaculate. The food is probably the best Greek food I have eaten in a hotel in Greece and I have been to many Greek Islands, the staff are friendly and helpful. If you want 5* then pay the price and go elsewhere but may not get true Grecian hospitality
