Once an orchard farm, Grifoglia is situated on 20 acres of sunny hillside. There are three recently created apartments within the lovely stone farmhouse and barn. The 10 meter by 4 meter pool is in full sun all day. We provide fresh vegetables and fruit from the garden at no extra cost and the drinking water is delicious spring water. Grifoglia is centrally located, about 1- 1/2 hours from the cities of Florence and Pisa, or the coast at Viareggio, and 1 hour north of Lucca, and offers opportunities for numerous day trips to historic hill towns or the beautiful coastal region of Cinque Terre. The principle city of Barga is renowned for its historic center, cathedral and summer music festivals and offers spectacular panoramic views of the local mountain ranges. The town of Coreglia Antelminelli, is known for its quiet village like historic center and has several small markets for nearby provisions. In addition to renovating the lovely old stone farm buildings, we have recently restored a beautiful and historic wayside Chapel on the property. It is ideal for intimate weddings, baptisms, and other celebrations. There is also a woodburning oven in our courtyard which we light at least once a week for pizza, baking or roasting and you're invited to join in. There are two one-bedroom apartments; one two-bedroom apartment; and one studio apartment. Each apartment has a kitchenette, a shower/bath and a sunny private terrace. The apartments are available for weekly Saturday to Saturday rentals. The property is well suited for children or a group of six adults.

My wife and I stayed here for 2 weeks at the end of July 2014, determined to clear our lungs of polluted city air and stress, and walk (not *too* strenuously) in wide green spaces. We couldn't have chosen better: not only the air and stunning scenery but the water was a revelation (Grifoglia has its own mountain spring which also feeds the lovely low-chemical swimming pool). A major advantage is the lack of mosquitoes in the area - apparently the bats eat what few there are. This is definitely the place to come to recharge body (esp lungs) and spirit for the urban middle-aged like us. There are three options to stay in Grifoglia, one (which we also saw) under the house where the hosts Kerry and Pietro live can be split into one or two separate flats. They are both decorated to a high standard: some friends came to stay for a few days (as by chance there was a cancellation) and enjoyed staying there very much indeed. All three options have lovely spaces outside with tables and chairs to sit and eat (as well as tables and chairs inside as well of course). There is also a shared washing machine for the sole use of guests - very handy indeed if you are in Italy for any length of time. Endless hot water, heated by solar panels (or a wood-burning stove in the central house). Electricity is also generated by solar power - they even sell it back to the grid. We stayed in "The Barn", a spotlessly clean and very tastefully converted outhouse, built into the rock, with everything necessary to cook -- including a BBQ. The Barn comprises two floors: downstairs, a comfortable kitchen sitting room with sofa, table and chairs and upstairs a lovely airy bedroom and ensuite shower room with French windows that open out onto a private grassy terrace from where you can watch the fireflies when it gets dark. Grifoglia is about 15 minutes drive to delightfully friendly and atmospheric Coreglia Antelminelli which has a food shop with all the basics, a butcher's with some of the best meat we've ever tried, a pharmacy, an internet cafe with free Wifi (if you really need it), and two restaurants (we ate in Grillo - very good, very friendly and very cheap). We were more than happy to walk the hour there and back through the forest on the almost traffic free road (we'd encounter maybe 4 slowly-driven cars there and back). The direct road to Barga from Grifoglia is undergoing some works so you shouldn't drive it at the moment, but, as to Coreglia, you can still walk very easily - it takes 2 hours and is definitely worth it for the exceptional scenery, nature and tiny roadside shrines which in the car you probably wouldn't notice. Barga itself is well worth a visit. In the car we did fabulous day trips to Lucca (an hour), Porta Venere (across the mountain pass of Passo del Vestito from Castelnuovo - one of the best trips in our lives - 3 hours each way but worth every second), Lerici (2 hours), Bagni di Lucca (40 mins) and Camaiore (90 mins - really off the tourist track but even more delightful for that reason). Kerry and Pietro, who both speak English, French, German as well as Italian, were wonderful hosts: friendly yet discreet. Pietro grows his own vegetables and fruit and was very generous with it indeed! They clean once a week, change the sheets and change the towels more often. On our last night they even made fabulous pizzas in the special pizza oven that Pietro has built! We thoroughly recommend a stay here for everyone who wants security, peace and tranquillity in a stunning mountainside setting.

Grifoglia was the perfect tonic to our hectic lives. We drove from Lucca to Barga, and then the windy, single track road for 20 mins through beautiful chestnut forests to reach our accommodation. Kerry and Pietro were great hosts, nothing being too much trouble. The lovingly cared for vegetable garden provided us with fresh ingredients for the inspired use of our well-appointed kitchen. We stayed in the studio apartment which was very comfortable, with the most beautiful view. Most of the time we were happy to stay at Grifoglia and do walks from there, and just relax and enjoy being in nature. At night in bed there was complete silence, only broken if you wanted to go out and look at the stars and then there would be the sound of owls and of the river. When we could tear ourselves away we would go to Barga for provisions or meals out, itself an interesting and lovely place, or drive further afield to the mountain towns and we did venture to Cinque Terra for the day from there which was wonderful but a rather long day. We had booked Grifoglia for 3 nights and stayed for 7, and came away relaxed, fit, and feeling we'd made a memorable connection with our hosts.

We stayed in the studio apartment at Grifoglia which had beautiful views of the Apennines Mountains. Lush chestnut trees are all around and there's a beautiful view of a small valley. The roads are very well maintained and lightly traveled except for local traffic and the morning school bus. The entire building was recently renovated. Our studio was in fantastic shape, everything was very well thought out. The bathroom was a true joy, lots of water pressure and ample hot water. The heated towel rack was a wonderful treat on cold mornings. The kitchen has everything you might need to fix a simple breakfast or even full pasta dinner. The view from the Queen sized bed looks out towards the vegetable garden and the tops of local snow capped mountains. One telephone or power line is the only man made thing visible from the window, such a treat coming from New York City. The grounds are beautifully maintained and the pool is very inviting, however our weather was just above freezing in mid March, so no dips for us. The garden is chock full of the most wonderful looking produce, most ripe for the picking. The owners have been steadily clearing and updating the grounds. Our apartment was minimally appointed, with well made furniture, nothing seemed cheap. It was very refreshing to get away from the typical Ikea furnishings. Everything was very solid and well placed. There was room for all our stuff and we didn't feel cramped at all. The studio was very clean, towels and sheets smelled great too. It was a joy to crawl up in bed with a book and cup of tea. The kitchen was perfect for one person or a very cozy team. It was a joy to make a basic breakfast every morning. I loved the stove-top espresso, so much so, when we returned to the States I rushed out and bought one. But for some reason, the coffee tasted better at Grifoglia. There is a gorgeous wood burning pizza oven on-site and Pietro offers pizza making classes. We spent a wonderful afternoon discussing and making pizza with the owners. One of the many things we will always remember about Grifoglia - Delish! The owners (American ex-pat, and an Italian) speak perfect English, French and their adorable son can get by in German. All the German he's learned, he learned from German children's TV. We wish we were still there, and didn't want to leave. Staying here was a true treat and something we'll always remember. This is the kind of place I could see returning to year after year. I envision using this is as a base camp for trips to Lucca, Florence, Pisa, Cinque Terre, even down to Chianti and beyond. The owners are amazingly sweet and helpful with translations, itineraries and directions. A true JOY! Nearby Barga is a complex and interesting town. Lots of history and a great music and art scene. Ricardo's L’Osteria in Piazza Angelio was delicious and my wife almost left me for Ricardo, but that's another story. Local pastries and coffee was outstanding. Tiglio Alto is a wonderful walk from the property, once you reach the top of the hill you are rewarded with an outstanding view and beautifully restored church. We took the train from Fornaci di Barga or other local train stations to Lucca, Pisa and Florence. We also took a bus to Lucca right from Barga. All very easy for stupid Americans.

Our week in Grifoglia offered the best of both worlds: quiet time by the pool reading books and day trips to Tuscan towns we had never heard of... it was what we considered to be a less touristy, more authentic week in Tuscany. The owners, Kerry and Pietro, made us feel right at home, even making us brick oven pizza on the terrace one night. The tastefully renovated apartment is spacious and includes a patio overlooking a plush valley. It is an eco-friendly place; hot water is provided by solar panels, they do organic gardening, and there is no chlorine in the pool. Lots of lovely lavendar grew right outside our door. It was nice to have our own kitchenette for our evening meals and they made sure we had plenty of fresh vegetables from their garden. You'll need a rental car and make sure to arrive during daylight because the location is off side roads in the mountains. The roads are narrow and curvy with steep drops on one side so be carefull! Within an hours drive you can visit Coreglia, Castelnuovo, Barga, or Lucca. You're sure to discover your own favorite town perched on top of a mountain! Grifoglia was wonderful!

We stayed at Grifoglia in June of this year. We rented the barn apartment for one week. We found the entire experience absolutely wonderful. The barn is clean and spacious. Lovely welcome pack which covered more than the basics. Kerry & Pietro were great hosts who fed us with pizza and salad and were good company without being intrusive. The swimming pool is excellent and kept spotless by Pietro. All in all we could not recommend this place enough and we will be back. As for the road, yes it is an experience the first time, but you do get used to it and the destination is well worth it.

An amazing place. We stayed for 10 nights from 17/9/05-26/9/05. A real retreat, a place to relax and forget your worries. Spotlessly clean, comfy beds, apartments have simple, contemporary decor. Garden and pool are fab. Kerry and Pietro, the owners, are a lovely couple and great hosts. Their hospitality and special consideration for our needs was fantastic. We took our 5 month old son and they provided a cot, baby bath and even a swing for him in the garden. V child friendly. We highly recommend it and hope to return.
