This hotel has a separate restaurant which is not on Trip Advisor. It should be. It is amazing. Wonderful food, great service, value for money. It has everything. They also give you free drinks at the end, limoncello, grappa… the pizzas are to die for. Lovely pasta dishes. All very traditional.

I recently visited Barga,a beautiful small town high up in the tuscan mountains.I stayed at a family run hotel called La Pergola with my boyfriend, its a 3 star hotel ,we had never stayed in a hotel in Italy opting instead for self catering.
Well we were pleasantly surprised, this is a little gem of a place!
The family and staff are extremely friendly and go out of their way to make you feel welcome. The rooms are modest ,comfortable and very clean.
The hotel has the added advantage of having a restaurant just
2 minutes away on foot also called La Pergola also fantastic. If
you go you HAVE to try the "taglionlini al limone" and the pizzas!
All to die for .
The hotel has a roof top terrace with astounding views of the Duomo and the old town (Barga Vecchia),beautiful!
All in all I would not hesitate in going back,in fact I cannot wait!

From the moment we arrived the staff were wonderful. We had a late flight into Pisa which meant we arrived at the hotel just before midnight. The owner had his wife waited for us and had a lovely warming welcome unpon our arrival. That hotel had fantastic view and was about a five minute walk from the old town. I couldn't fault this hotel and would definitely stay there again.

Ugly lobby, dirty room, sheets with holes in and not changed for the whole week we were there. Nothing worked, TV, phone etc. Shower like those one would find in a school gym i.e. fixed nozzle on wall. Intermittent hot water. Towels not changed.

Food lousy, not much choice and one serving time. Salad was shredded iceburg and tinned sweetcorn. Staff didn't speak English so not much use in trying to resolve matters on site, despite Pergola serving the Brits for over 20 years. They should employ a bi-lingual person. We did our own thing and found that the rest of Tuscany have good English speaking youth so ordering food etc. was much better than in our own hotel!

We speak some 'tourist' Italian and that helped around Barga, so stay at a different hotel, have your drinks/coffees at the lovely Alpino where the locals have theirs (ncluding a small limoncello or grappa!). Enjoy the place but steer clear of the Pergola unless you like slumming it at high prices.....xx

This is a small family run Hotel, which I have stayed in no less than 4 times. It offers the traveller an oasis of tranquillity yet never leaves you feeling isolated.

Granted the breakfasts may be lean, however they are adequate and better than many offerings to be had from many of the continental establishments I have previously stayed in. The food to be had however in the nearby restaurant, of the same name, is to die for (best Pizzas I have ever had)

The hotel has a panoramic roof terrace and offers superb views over Barga to the mountains ,both to the north and south. Barga itself sits on a promontory in the Serchio valley in the Carfagnana and is surrounded by both the Apuan and Appenine mountains. On the hotel terrace you can either sun bathe or sit in the shade, admiring the views. You could even dial reception, using the telephone provided, and order your beer or Gin and Tonic. You might even chose to sit in the Jacuzzi provided.
In the late afternoon, circa 4pm Monica arrives to work at the hotel until around 11pm. She is the hotel’s main English speaker and is most obliging. Should you have questions re the surrounding area etc, best speak to Monica.

Barga claims to be the most Scottish city in Italy and rightly so. Every year it celebrates its festival of Fish and Chips, has its Scottish week and sports a fine Scottish Italian museum , extolling the links between this part of Italy and the west of Scotland. Many of the locals speak Italian with Scots accents and a fair number of local villas would appear to be owned by Scots Italians. Scottish Premier football teams often train at the “Il Ciocco” Complex nearby.

Evening life in lower Barga centres around both Onesti’s and the Bar Alpino both located at the town crossroad. Sit here of an evening and people watch! For great food at lunchtime , you won’t beat Riccardo’s restaurant opposite the main gate to old Barga, just up beyond the view point. Here you can have two courses with water and wine for a set price of ten euros pp.

Adjacent to Barga and dominating the local area is the hilltop town of Sommocolonia, where on 26th December 1944 a small regiment of black Americans, outnumbered by six to one, refused to give up their positions, chosing instead to call down American artillery fire on their own positions in a bid to hold the allied line. A version of this story can be read at http://www.wiz-worx.com/366th/fox/index.htm

I intend go back to Barga and I look forward to my stay at La Pergola. “It does just what it says on the box. “

This is our third time visiting, the views from the roof terrace are wonderful, you can see the Duomo and the mountains. The staff are friendly and attend to every need. We celebrated my wife’s 50th birthday with friends and they really made our stay welcoming!
